1. Welcome to the Art + Literature sections! Some things to keep in mind:
    • It's a good idea to specify whether or not you're looking for critique from your fellow members. Please don't let friendly criticism turn into an all-out flame war.
    • Art and literature often deal with mature subjects. This is fine, but please keep in mind that we'd like to keep things PG-13. Don't let discussions get out of hand, and if they do, please alert a moderator.

So I've recently gotten back into Pixel Art, after being out of the loop for what, 4-5 years? and I would really love some comments and critiques on my work and sprites.

I also love to do flash art and works with that and so here are some of my mini designs minus animations

You've got pillowshading on the hood where Link is turned around and on the chest of the dive suit guy, fix that. Also, up the contrast of your shadows, you're going into a gradient look and you don't want that. Also, make sure your shading follows a distinct light source, as of now it doesn't look like it does.
Keep working on the characters, they're pretty good, just need some fine tuning :)

First of all, thanks for all the feedback. I very much appreciate it :D
With the PillowShading, it's something I used to do and am trying to avoid, the only way I can see to fix it is to use a much larger diversity of colours, which to me can look odd.
Light sourcing is a problem I need to overcome.
Thanks alot, I'll keep working on the characters and try to create a walking animation hopefully.

Also here is something else I made in a quick 5 minutes

It's not that bad but I still need to be a lot more confident with my shading and colour choices.

I've been practicing a little more and have took inspiration from a stance I've seen used in a few games and have came out with this. I hope it looks better. And the Red Link looks terrible but oh well. I'd love critiques on this though :3

    5 mins? Woah nice job.

Please hide pixel grid before screenshoot, makes it harder to see. Follow FS critiqs, he's accurated. The red link doesnt look terrible for me.

    Keep it

In some places, it might just be the grid but it looks like in some places the outline is a bit thick by like a pixel, so go back and touch that up. If the eyes are supposed to look slacked then keep them, otherwise if the eyes are supposed to be attentive and open, make them one solid color. For eye shadow, make a two pixel line going to the left over the left eye and to the right over the right eye. That usually does it. Other than that, just work on a bit of shading to make it look a bit more realistic , as of now the shading in a few spots area little off. Also, try and watch banding if you can. If you don't know what that is, it's when two different colored pixels make a perfect line with each other, examples are like in the gloves of the middle sprite (although that kind of banding is sometimes necessary because of the limited size). It's tricky sometimes to determine the difference between necessary and unnecessary banding, but just keep practicing and you'll figure it out.

Just as a question, what's pillowshading? I feel like I might have done it before in some of my work...

Pillowshading is where you shade from the outline inward with no regard to lightsources. It looks like the shading on a pillow, thus pillowshading.

    Ah ok, that makes sense.

Hopefully I won't be doing this for any more of my work :p Though saying that I think this animation needs to be fixed up and have it's pillow shading removed. However something is still wrong :/ Any idea?

The arm closest to use doesn't swing back enough. In fact it looks as if it is slamming into a wall. Take a look at the running animation frames for starbound.

Other than I think the buttons looks are flashing way too fast I am quite happy of this xD [IMG]
