i found a video that makes starbound's crystal planets a little less fictional
scientist were keeping watch of a tiny, but really dense star ( forget what they said what they were *and it wasn't a dwarf star* ) they eventualy found out that there was a planet orbiting it. after further investigation they came to the conclusion that it was a large ball of crystallized carbon aka diamond.

    video:

nice info i guess? now i wonder what we can make from crystals... like a crystal set or something

That is called white dwarf. It's what our Sun will become after the turns into a Giant red.

Actually, a white dwarf is what a star eventually turns into when it does not have enough mass to become a neutron star (Pulsar). The Sun will not turn into what is displayed in the video. Hope this helped.

OT: That's a really cool find. But, I'm not sure if we'd be able to do much digging and exploring on a planet made of diamond. :p

Between fictional metals such as those found in traditional high fantasy and science fiction and the fact that diamond is capable of being used to cut other diamond, I'm sure they could figure out a way to do this in Starbound. Besides, nobody said a planet with a crystalline structure had to be diamond. :p

Oh yeah just noticed watching the video , when the OP said that the star would basicaly be made of crystal I immediatly thought of the white dwarf.

Also note that diamond, despite being the hardest element it is a crystalline structure and is brittle, and large chunks (sports ball-ish) will shatter to impact damage.
Just because it is the hardest does not mean it is the strongest. For example, regular steel and glass have the same hardness, and if you were to take a hammer to a same sized panel of each, one will dent, while the other shatter.
