Crops not growing

So, I have some crops on my home planet. They are planted on tilled brown dirt in a well-lit underground area. When I'm on my ship or another planet, I don't think they grow. I've spent hours elsewhere then I come back and one of my chilis has grown an extremely small amount. I don't want to farm on my ship because it would take up a lot of space and ruin the look. Do crops not grow on far away planets? If so, why?

No, they do not grow when on your ship or on other planets. Why? I don't know much about how games work, but I'm pretty sure that it would strain a computer to always have every planet you've ever been to loaded and running. Just do some activities on your planet, such as mining, exploring, or building and they'll grow. Except for the chillies, which seem to take forever (as well as currentcorn). If you really want these to grow, just minimize your game and browse the internet, while sleeping in a bed in an enclosed area. They should hopefully grow.

It might be nice if they could make it such that there is an option to run the home planet. Failing that, an item (or perhaps one from a mod) that keeps an area loaded, as though a player were there, could be nice.

Or perhaps a player could designate a location on a planet as a "base" which remains loaded at all times as though a player were there.

Naturally, a player would be limited to maybe only having one of these things because as mentioned it WOULD be a system resource issue, particularly in multiplayer, if players had unrestricted ability to spam area-loading whatnot.

Some minecraft mods have such "anchor" items in them actually. Its basically a block that the game treats as though there were a player just watching the game from its position. So it keeps that area loaded at all times regardless of where real players are at, which is useful as said mods tend to have things like complex wiring and machinery and nuclear reactors that can take issue if only half of the blocks they are located on are loaded. But they are also useful for making sure your crops grow and your chickens lay eggs and stuff when you are off elsewhere.
