Crop Farming Suggestion

I feel that farming is currently too time consuming and unrewarding.

Once you harvest some wheat you will most likely have to extend your farm to accommodate for the extra seeds that the wheat crops gave you. You extended the farm and planted the seeds, and boom, you already have more wheat to harvest at the beginning of your farm. You harvest, you extend, you plant, you repeat. There is barely any time in between to do anything else. Now, granted, you don't have to harvest or replant the crops right away. But it just doesn't feel right leaving grown crops unharvested or seeds unplanted if you are serious about making some food for your group of players or your own travels. Which brings me to the point of the payoff that you get from each crop.

So far I have not noticed any crops giving more than one food item per crop. They have, however, been giving more than one seed. I wish we would get more food items from each crop, to make farming more rewarding and therefore less reliant on the quantity of the crops you grow. Increasing the time it takes for crops, wheat especially, would help balance this.

I also heard that you need to be near the crops for them to grow. If this is the case, then it does not make much sense. The crops should grow while you are playing the game anywhere in the starbound universe, assuming that you are on the same server as your planted crops. Feel free to correct me if this crop growth mechanic is outdated.

I would also like to see more gardening tools with the ability to break up more horizontal blocks of soil for increased efficiency of farming. Something like an upgraded hoe, rake, shovel, or tiller. Making these go up to a maximum of 4 horizontal blocks seems reasonable.

Thank you for reading. Comments and more on-topic suggestions are appreciated.

I think one of the best advancements they could make on crops is allow for tilling/planting on the background blocks. It condenses the space used and allows for more grown crops for food.

I feel like this also encourages crop growth outside rather than inside buildings. It becomes a win-win-win.

And even still, if you want to plant crops inside, you can. They'll just be less condensed than, say, an open field (which makes sense). ;-)

Sounds interesting. However, I am not sure how you envision being able to see the background crops if you also have foreground crops in front of them.
