This thread is old, but it's still a subject of much discussion. Tiy did tweet yesterday that he would decrease the large meteor significantly. I think a similar one with the meteor showers, not sure. The large meteor will spawn (currently) at the upper corner of your screen (from others I've read about) so there is essentially no safe spot to be. But yesterday, when exploring a planet with near-daily meteor showers (the small ones that are like bombs) I noticed that when they hit water, they slow down dramatically and just fall straight down until hitting an object. So if there was a way to build a single-layer of dirt over your structure, which is underwater, you could save it. But, those meteors aren't terrible, and you'd have to constantly be rebuilding said single layer, or more if you get a meteor that hits the same spot more than once. Will be interesting to see how ocean biome meteor showers work, if when you are far below the surface, inter-stellar depth charges start slowly creeping down upon you.

For the craters, I have never seen a planet with craters in the background and had small meteors. They always have acid rain for me.

In general. I don't think the background corresponds with what kind of weather you'll get.

Ok, some people here have somehow managed to miss a lot of important information.
THERE CAN BE MORE THAN ONE TYPE OF WEATHER PER PLANET.
Weather chances are NOT stored in the planetary files. They are stored in the biome files.
THERE IS ONLY ONE TYPE OF WEATHER PER PLANETARY BIOME.
Each biome on a given planet has one type of weather in it.
Say you have Planet WAZ. Planet WAZ has two biomes. The main biome is forest, the second biome is desert.
When you generate Planet WAZ for the first time, two weather conditions will be picked: One for the forest, and one for the desert.
Say Planet WAZ gets Sparkling Rain as the forest weather type, and Meteor Showers as the desert weather type.
As long as you are in the forest, if weather begins, it will be Sparkling Rain. The Sparkling Rain will last as long as it is designed to last, regardless of where you go during that time. You can go to the desert during the Sparkling Rain, and it won't magically transform into meteor showers.
Say you stand in the desert. A meteor shower starts. You run back to the forest. The meteor shower will continue until it is designed to end, regardless of where you go. You can cause Weather 1 to happen in Biome 2 and Weather 2 to happen in Biome 1 by this manner.
Sometimes, Biome 1 and Biome 2 will have the same weather. This is random chance, as far as I can tell.
I had one planet I flew around in which the primary biome (snow) suffered from frequent acid rain, but the secondary biome (desert) had sparkling rain.
THE BACKGROUND HAS NOTHING WHATSOEVER TO DO WITH THE WEATHER.
The Background (called the Parallax) and the Weather are effectively independent. Technically they are both influenced by biome, but since biomes don't have different chances for different weather conditions (that I've noticed) it's essentially independent at the moment.
THE WEATHER ONLY HAPPENS WHEN YOU ARE NEARBY.
In fact, EVERYTHING only happens when you are nearby. This is because nothing else is loaded. If you stay in one spot on a meteor shower planet, meteors will only spawn around you, leaving a single crater-scarred area on an otherwise smooth planet (at least, until you hang around anywhere else long enough for meteors to start bombing it). Plants will not grow if they're outside the load boundaries. Nor will monsters spawn or die (in fact, monsters that aren't persistent are deleted when they leave the load area). Items used to be non-persistent, I think they might have fixed that. Wiring may not work properly across load boundaries. The list goes on. The "complete lack of evidence for meteor showers" is a sign of this. And due to the size of the Giant Meteor, and the load boundary restrictions on its spawning, it will almost always spawn somewhere it will wreck you.
Yes, it is unrealistic, but it also has a framerate above 1. Pick your poison.
WEATHER WILL ONLY SPAWN IF THERE IS OPEN BACKGROUND SOMEWHERE IN THE LOAD AREA.
For this purpose, I note that "open background" means "anywhere you can beam up". If there is a background wall, it is not "open background". If it's below the divider line that starts the underground, it's not "open background". If you go about a hundred or two hundred blocks underground (ballpark), weather will not ever bother you. You'll also have a heck of a time trying to beam back up, but you can design a platform staircase or (in later tiers) use Butterfly Jump to get in and out.
I think that's everything I had to say.

I second the idead for a craftable meteor sheild...i like that there is some sort of random danger in it, so I do not want that to change whatsoever, but it would be a nice addition to have the ability to craft some sort of defense system (perhaps in the higher tiers)

I still have not seen a big meteor... they seem very rare.
