Critical, Game-Breaking Issue

What I don't get is why meteor plagued planets are always so nice and normal looking, until you just happen to beam down. A planet with regular meteor fall should be wrecked, ever-changing landscape. I mean it should be obvious from the moment you set foot on it.

I think that the planets don't actually exist in your universe until you beam down on them. It would be nice to have some ship scanners to check weather before you even bother going there.

Technically, but they could be added via world generation. Some craters could even be eroded and filled in with sand (if there's an atmosphere.)

That would help. I'm either landing to find resources, or looking for a place to permanently build. Some kind of info on the weather would be helpful.

I think it's be good if large meteors had some sort of warning so you'd have like a few minutes to build a shield to protect against it. I think that would make it more of a cool event and less of something that just totally ruins people's work.

    Are you serious?
They made a UFO piloted by penguins, for crying out loud. Even if that doesn't fit in at all. Same for coal used as fuel, and golden pickaxes.
75% of the stuff in this game does not 'fit in'.

I think that something should be done about the massive meteors. There needs to be some warning and there needs to be a craft-able (higher tiered of course) item that you can protect yourself against them.

Hilarious story about my run-in with a meteor. I was fighting the UFO Boss on an arid planet, when I had just killed it a meteor landed right on top of me, instantly killing me and destroying the boss drop.

    That's not critical... or game-breaking.

This. Even if we're eventually able to scan planets to assess things like meteor strikes, this is not only useful, it makes more sense than anything.

Hey, guess what? It happened to you once, and now you know about it! Perhaps next time you will either 1. Not keep ALL of your stuff on planet, or 2. Make your nifty little house far enough underground that it canot be taken out by the meteors. Game-breaking issue? Seems to me that the game is working just fine. You, on the other hand, are not adapting to the gameplay.

I could not agree more. It would be absolutely gamebreaking for me. But I am quite certain they will get around to tweaking how meteor showers work. They'd have to. Every planet should absolutely NOT have metorites smashing into them. It needs to vary, and the scanner needs to let us know which environments are safe. I trust that the dev team is aware of this though, so I'm not overly worried.

In the meantime, for those of you who wish to have a more limited and controlled meteorite experience, Dr. Toros was awesome enough to whip up a quick mod that disables the meteors in certain biomes. Here's a link to the thread with a direct link to the download. "Like" his posts and support! This is a fairly decent compromise as far as I'm concerned regarding the Meteor Showers as they are implemented now. Off in the more standard planet biomes, on in the more exotic. Will give you a chance to experience meteors yet still give you a few safe places to build.

    Mod Thread - http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/turn-off-meteor-showers.59450/#post-1602438

    Meteor Showers On For:
    • Moon
    • Magma
    • Tentacle
    • Tundra
    • Volcanic
    • Barren
    • Asteroidfield
    Meteor Showers Off For:
    • Arid
    • Jungle
    • Desert
    • Forest
    • Snow
    • Grasslands

To me this is an adequate enough compromise until the devs fix things up a bit. Safe places to build, and more dangerous places to explore and such.

Meteorites are treated as a type of weather? If that's the case, i hope it will change. Meteorites should be random events that could happen everywhere.

Right now, as a beta tester, it's my obligation to report on issues that need to adapt to the players. I don't understand your hostility here, honestly.

Remember: Starbound isn't a rogue-like, it's not I Want to Be the Guy; Starbound is a game with an incredibly wide appeal, and a good portion of those people are going to be into it for being able to make awesome, epic houses. Chucklefish knows this, of course, which is why when there's an issue that comes up that punishes players for doing that, I'm going to speak up.

I love Starbound dearly; this is one of the greatest games I've ever played, and I'm honored to be a member of the beta, which gives me the opportunity to make my opinion known when something comes up that ruins fun.

thats why i pick Snow / Acrtic type planets cause from my knowledge as of right now no acid rain or any really dangerous type of environment , granted you are going to freeze to death low lvl but thats what snow armor is for i always have it on my starship encase for exploring on cold planets

but i can feel your pain bro , i had the bone crusher sword and alt tabbed out of game and when i clicked back in i had that weapon equipped and destroyed all my chests and modern stairs , witch my inventory as full as it can be i lost everything within that day

I saw this happening a mile away when we put those things in. And I have a response that you've heard 1000 times. "It's Beta" ;p.

lol sorry. I'm hoping we'll put in more of the planet description information into the UI soon. Basically you might get some basic information such as the weather, temp, etc that might help you determine if the planet will work with your goals. Also, some kind of other protection against meteor storms would be neat. Some planets should probably never be smart to inhabit. But I think we can convey the dangers better and as far as I know have been planning to but just haven't got to it yet (without it being TOO specific to kill exploration).

We're in a stage where we're kind of haphazardly throwing features into the game sometimes knowing they'll cause issues, "because Beta", and fix them later. I don't know if that's the right way to do it, but we're doing it. :)

I had a cluster of 5 of these giant meteors drop on me during the Bone Dragon fight.. Epic death was EPIC..
It left a crater as deep as a mountain is tall.. If I had been less than 20 blocks closer to my base, it would have gotten nuked.. Fortunately I built my arena a decent distance from my base.. Unfortunately that means I need to pack up and rebuild on another planet.. =/

See there, my trust was well placed. Biggest reason I wasn't overly worried. I'm sure by the time it's all said and done it will make sense. Question now is what kind of ideas people have that might help with the tweaking?

One thing that I could accept as "fixing" it could be something as simple as a "Meteorite Defense Turret". Once that is build and placed, can protect that planet/area from meteorites. Sounds easy enough.

I think some kind of force field emitter would make more sense and be more aesthetic. Also maybe the number of planets affected by meteor showers and the like should be reduced to just planets with "thin atmospheres." However that might be defined.

Also, Quenton's idea of having meteor planets look scarred on the surface.
