If planets are infinitely generated and no two are alike, creatures will also be randomlygenerated? there will be a variation among creatures? It would be strange to see the same penguin on two different planets. Would end upboring, seeing that the planets are only visually different.

I think theirs going to be a whole lot of creature variation considering the 2100 rocket launchers.

While I doubt that the variations can be infinite, I do believe there will be a LOT of variations, so much so that you will be TRYING to find two identical creatures. I'll call them bob and Jill.

Nope, there'll be an infinite amount of variations for everything once the game is done.

It can not be infinite... to do so they would have to create an infinite amount of variations in the first place.

Now that's an idea, finding a creature that looks the same. Gives us a goal to find ingame huh?

The devs are randomly generating everything! Not manually, meaning the game will make up the variations as you play (i assume). And therefore you will always find something new.

OK, I think you are exaggerating...

@Breather Well what if their not exactly randomly generated? What if, perhaps, they used equations? It's just a matter of finding the right one and kaboom. You find the percentage of a shiny. No matter what they try to do, there will always be a code to crack.

Well, I could be wrong! But from what I know, there'll be an infinite amount creatures. They're for planets, so why not the other stuff. :p

@Breather I think that'll be one of my missions, to find a shiny of something, just to say I did.
BOT: I wouldn't know how they could randomly generate a creature though. Do they do recolours or something? Different Stats? Both Perhaps?

Well, if the amount of pixels are finite, there would be a finite amount of patterns to a given pixel area; let's call that a part. Now, since the amount of patterns in a given pixel area is finite, the amount of parts is finite. I'm assuming the devs are using finite parts for all creatures; therefore, each creature would have a finite amount of variations. Now, don't get me wrong; I do think the amount of variations will be staggering; it's just that it can't be infinite.

It is easier to random generate the planets because most of the planet randomization is in the terrain.
They will have already drawn all the components for each different type of planet (Trees, Grass, Rocks, etc.) and these will just overlay the terrain.

I believe one of the devs have already said that the creatures won't have infinite variations, i think it was in the comments of the monster monster contest winner announcement, but good luck trying to find it in amongst all that hate...

EDIT: Okay, nevermind, i found it

@thefluvirus Funny things about fans is their loyal until they lose something. Terraria was the same way.
BOT: @thefluvirus I'll take a gander and look for it, there's bound to be something there I can find.

Edit: @thefluvirus You beat me to the bunch!
Well, that clears things a little better if I do say so myself?

If the creatures are generated randomly, making the possibilities almost endless, believe that the names, characteristics, status, attributes, and items are also generated randomly. I wonder about the "encyclopedia" that records the creatures that we found, can be huge.

I imagine it would end up being something like spores creature generation....although the possible variations will number in the several hundred thousands they will all pull from the same graphical asset pools which will create a limited number of creatures overall. For example you might have 25 different heads for a "penguin" type creature along with 25 different body styles and the game pulls a random head and puts it on a random body and the colors and names it randomly. however all variations will come from the "penguin" type creature class and thus behave like each other. Resulting in something like 15,000+ combinations of different penguin like creatures? (I'm not too good at math) . But as the fluvirus quoted above, it was done this way to create a quality experience. You don't want completely randomized creatures because then you may end up with a horse with a penguin head that acts like a fish and it would just seem wrong.

As for planets, I am assuming they will use a similar world generation scheme as terraria that randomizes the blocks that makeup different terrain or biome types producing random yet controlled results each time. I am curious as to how they plan on allowing us to travel to several of these procedural worlds seamlessly. Then again I don't know much about programming.

If you saw the deer picture, it shows that deer will behave like a deer, but have different variations in appearance, power, and loot.
