Creature Name Edit

This is a short idea that I thought would be cool to add into the game. In terraria (and I think starbound) you can hover over the creature with your cursor and see it's name and health, to me this ruins the whole adventure aspect, if you see a creature with 1000 health and you just recently started you wouldn't dare go near it, right, instead you would go away and get better gear. What if you you can't see the creatures helth when you put your cursor on it only the name, you wouldn't be as frightened (well unless it looked tough) and if you attack it you get a good idea of how hard it is, but you still have no clue how much health it has. So once you kill one of a creature then and only then will you be able to see its health. So lets say you have never been on the starbound forums and just got the game, you see a poptop, it looks nice, but when you get near it it attacks and you relise it has a good amount of health. It would show this in your logbook once you killed the creature.[IMG] Leave any other ideas or edits to mine down below. Thanks :cautious:

Being able to name creatures yourself might be fun.

It's not naming a creature but that would be cool, what I meant was that it only show it's name/Health after you killed one of them.

Nah I'd like to know the name of the thing I'm about to kill, and how much health it has, the naming pets on the other hand...

Well the name would show, but the main idea is that you wouldn't go after a creature with lots of health in the start of the game, and once you have killed one then it would show the health. It's just a way to add more adventure and choices.

Or maybe after you've scanned it, it will show you all its info?

This is actually a great idea. I dislike being able to instantly see all of somethings stats as soon as you look at it in games like this. It kind of ruins the atmosphere of exploration for me. I personally think that only bosses should ever display their health, just because of the much larger variety in health that they could have. And I still think that this should require you to scan them first or something. For normal enemies though you should just have to learn and remember how tough they are to defeat. The threat level of the planet will kind of give you a rough idea of how hard the enemies are going to be anyway.

That's a good way of doing it. I'm not sure how you would scan something that is trying to attack you but a way can be figured out. Perhaps you could go around in a spaceship abducting specimens for analysis.

With your hand held scanner ofcourse

I was thinking more of things that may me much faster than you. Perhaps killing it then scanning its body would work, if there are bodies and the enemies don't just disappear when they die.

We're well aware of that picture, but it's just that; a picture. There is no way of telling how they obtained that information (ie from scanning or from killing one first) or even really what information that will show about each monster. Therefore this topic is still very much valid in discussing how an what information we would like to see shown.

If you read it, it shows you all info on it

I am well aware of how to read thank you. But as I said before, the picture shows nothing about how you acquire the information, or even what information will be displayed. All that picture shows is a little basic paragraph about the creature and some icons that we don't know the meaning or function of. It doesn't show health, armour, location, or any of the other stats that we were discussing here, so discussion here is still perfectly valid until more official information is released.

I personally like the idea of scanning a creatures to get the information about them, either while they are still alive or after you've killed one. I'd still prefer not being able to see their health while you're attacking them though. I think scanning should be purely for fun to build up an interesting journal about all the lifeforms that you've discovered.

This is a good idea, I like it. Will make things even more interesting and will force us to be more cautious when approaching an enemy!

Tiy even said you can scan them with a hand held machine thingy, and its obvious what the symbols mean

    So... what do they mean?

Variations, Biomes found in, Attacks, Item Drops, Armour Drops, Stats? Your guess is as good as mine. There is nothing that is definitively obvious about them, and until we receive some official information then everything is just speculation. I'm interested in what information we'll be able to discover about the creatures in the game, especially as they'll be procedurally generated. However this has nothing to do with this threads initial focus anyway. The OP was wondering whether you would be able to see the health of enemies the first time you fought them, for which we have no idea and no official information to prove one way or the other.

Well i think the name of the creature should come up if the cursor hits it. but the health well yeah i agree its better to find out with combat and if you get your ass kicked then you know not to go back to the same creature until your much more advanced in ability and gear. CAMZ
