Modding Discussion Creating a race mod in Starbound.

Already potentially working on a proper slime-based race.

Gonna be interesting to be able to shrink down into a puddle for movement and such if that's possible to be set up in Starbound.

Also, I'm going to loathe joining random servers and pony race things are a thing. Good thing I'm gonna have my own for hosting.

 

Sounds like a LoL Vladimir thing (If you play LoL, that is).
So, your idea, if I'm guessing correctly, is that you'd have an ability that allows you to shrink down to a puddle, but still be able to move, and (presumbaly) clip through certain blocks (like doors ie the slime "goes under" the door)

It's possible so long as Starbound
A) Let's you specify completely custom sprites for movement if an ability is active and
If Starbound allows abilities to specify the ability to clip through blocks
i) Bonus points if you can specify WHICH block types to clip through

My immediate guess is that B won't happen without a mod. Can't say for sure until we tear into it though

The move in particular, yes, can be directly translated as Vlad's Sanguine Pool. A slime based organism could have many ways of mobility and physical defense due to not being an entirely physical form. But heavy things could pose an issue. I suppose the game will be moddable enough for it to be possible, though.

 

I hope you're right. However, since, generically speaking, noclip is considered a cheat, it may be forcibly disabled. I hope it isn't though.

Ah yes, and "heavy things". That's tough too, because, if this turns out at all like Terraria (pro-tip: it will), non-falling blocks probably won't have weight associated with them. So you may have to scrap that particular feature.

Another comment (And don't get the wrong idea. I like your slime race idea. I like it so much, I'm thinking about it. If I'm thinking about it, ideas pop up): It's too bad there's no magic in Starbound, because, IMO, slime guys are ripe for the ability that, more or less "Turn into a slime pool, gaining +70% physical resistance and -70% magic resistance". I don't know if Starbound is planning on having elemental weapons or w/e, but that might work in place of magic for good balancing (In puddle mode, you take very little physical damage, but if something hits you with a fire attack, uh-oh).

 

Might be, but in the end you know it will be the most common of race mods.
People will end up saying one of three things:

"Yeeeeah.....I'm not going through that many items, reskin it is"
"HA! Challenge accepted, I plan to completely add unique examination text for ev....screw this, copy and paste"
"I did it....I did it.....wait...was the sun always this bright?!...WAS I IN JUMANJI?!"

instead of original content, you'd like to recycle an idea from a cartoon?
also, no lore, limited race exclusive actions, etc.

no offense intended, but i don't get why bronies want to make a "pony race".
i like pokemon a lot, but do i really want a pokemon race?

Well you can't really MAKE a Pokemon race because each Pokemon is different, there is no one representation OF a Pokemon. They don't all look the same in a general sense.

 

Same could be said for ponies.
There are many characters.

 

Actually I wasn't planning on taking any of the content from the show at all. Not even characters. It's going to be 100% original content just with colorful ponies so it adds an attraction to anyone that may like the show and would want to be able to possibly play as their OC in a pony based story.

 

Considering the Bunny Statues found in Avian temples, a possible Bunny race that would be friendly towards the Avian as the statues are found in Avian temples.

 

The rabbit statues are considered insults to avians, and they're a reference to a scrapped race "idea".

Currently working on an athromorphic race of Crazed mad scientists from a steampunk story I'm writing.. Managed to tie in lore nicely Nothing says you done goofed like ripping holes in the fabric of reality and getting spat out at a random planet. Getting the hair and colourations set up properly will be a pain though...

 

Especially when you end up in another reality or alternate universe

 

Could you shed some light on some of those races?

are they original concepts?

i googled roos cus it sound funny and all i got was stuff of shoes/roses/kangaroos

or is that was a roos is?
