Was just thinking about the crafting and a simple idea popped into my head. I'm probably sure that most people do not like to alt tab out of game and have to Google a crafting table. My idea, basically, would be something like being able to craft a computer (or something else) that when you click on it a list/table of every craftable item pops up. Some kind of way of quick searching what you want. In Terraria I always wanted to know how to make something because I would forget how to craft it. I would go to the guide, but then I would forget that you actually had to have one of the pieces to show him to find out what it can be crafted into.

Most likely someone has already thought of this and I just missed the topic. I would like a link though to the topic if one exists.

short version: Computer that shows all the crafting in an easy to search list/table.

i haven't seen a topic like this: at least i don't think i have, but i hadn't even thought of an in-game crafting menu type thing you could bring up on a computer
or having a PDA to bring it up would be handy

the guide in terraria was helpful to have though on occasions but your idea sounds pretty useful

also a crafting book of sorts would also be handy over a computer or PDA, but any of the 3 could work fine

I think that this would work like this:

    1. The first crafting wiki, would be a basic crafting book (much like the guide) which would show you the basic things that could be crafted, and had a bit of space for extra things to be added in (space for 10 extra things?)

    2. You could have a portable device, which you would have to carry around (this would be a mid-game item) which held more advanced crafting recipes, and you could hold up to 200 crafting recipes before it's memory would be full (non expandable)

    3. Finally, as an endgame item you could have a supercomputer which would remember everything you craft, and keep the recipe, and hold almost all craftable items (mechanical items mainly) from the beginning. You could hold up to 1000 recipes.

Last of all, you could have a notebook (upgrades to a tablet) on which you could keep all your notes on craftable items/weapons/animals etc, and you could write anything and everything about the environment :)

  4. This is the main thing that makes me rage at Minecraft, not knowing how to craft the things I want...

Not too sure about having to craft a computer/PDA to tell you how to craft things.

Personally, I prefer a system similar to that in Technic/Tekkit, where hovering over an item in your inventory and pressing "R" (for Recipies) tells you what recipies that item is used in, and where applicable, how that item was crafted.
Of course, you would have to find/craft an item before you knew HOW to craft more, but that makes sense...

OR, just have a device that lists all the crafting recipes, without a limited memory, but an item wouldn't be listed until you have already crafted it once, or found it out in the wilds of space...

I'd personally just like a menu in game to list everything you have crafted (like a catalog) instead of going to a specific location or NPC. So long as it's in game however, I don't mind doing either one. I honestly dislike having to Google a wiki for crafting, it removes the immersion factor I tend to have in games like these.

I like the idea of a computer because your crafting gear will be at your base anyway and a computer would just be something else you could add to your house.

Oh and about Minecraft there was nothing that showed you how to do anything. You had to look that stuff up. There was no way for new players to know how to craft anything and I would even find myself having to alt tab out to learn how to make a different potion or the order of the pieces at the table to make the ladder.

-1 it makes it more of a challenge to find out the materials you need
half of us are from the minecraft community and the other half, the terraria community and i like challenges

  8. I see your point, but I think you've misunderstood...

All the previous posts seem to suggest a device that records items YOU'VE ALREADY CRAFTED, not give you all the recipes.
So it's no different to remembering that a square of cobblestone makes a furnace.

I hope Starbound doesn't make use of crafting 'patterns' like Minecraft did.

I was thinking of not things you crafted already, but just all possible crafts or most of them. And Yea I don't like crafting patterns either.

The makes me think, they haven't said anything about the crafting at all. I'm pretty sure they won't have "crafting patterns" since the only people who actually thought "This gives me a challenge" was the people who play Minecraft. That I know of, no has shown the crafting GUI, or even if you CAN craft.

  11. Yes yes yes.
I like this. I like this a LOT. Makes it SO much more simple and user friendly.

  12. Ah, in which case, what Evinagro said is understandable.

According to Blue, there will be some kind of crafting, that of creating guns out of component parts, but not necessarily a set way to craft a set item.

Presumably, bricks and walls would have to be crafted by the player, as opposed to being gathered from the environment.
I don't want to be living in a house made of raw dirt or stone, and it would look pretty silly if Gold bricks formed naturally underground.
Yes, I appreciate that we could loot existing cultures buildings, and that in a procedurally generated universe, anything is possible, but...

EDIT: Also, this, this, and this.

oh, ok now i approve of that idea much like tf2 crafting you discover recipes

Maybe you could have a Camera and a computer and you could take a picture of an item and take it back to to the computer and it would tell you how to craft it?

That's what I meant, and there would also be some preloaded crafting recipes on more basic things, or a bit like the guide, you could see what could be crafted with certain items. A system similar to that in Tekkit would work better ingame, where you'd be getting chains of crafting recipes and more complicated recipes :L

starboundopedia! :D you have scientist people on your ship that are supposed to help you right? so what if you could tell them "I want a blueprint for a light source" we have already seen two different types of light sources (torches and those blue glowing things) and starbound is all about variability, it would be cool if each person's torches and things like that were generated differently. so each torch looks different. does any one like the idea? or is terrible?

    Ephexis Cosmic Narwhal

a player could just make different colored torches instead? terraria had that

also there's going to be flashlights too, not just torches and blue lamp things
