So has the armor system been talked about in detail? Because from that screenshot it looks like they're going the "armor is extra health" route instead of it actually being protective... though it could be both I suppose, I can't see all the stats in that grey box :X

There are a lot of game mechanics implied by this screenshot. You should almost put "spoiler" on the thread title.

Yes! They are doing the "list of craft-able items" tactic! Which is good because a grid style craft menu (like minecraft) is so limiting that you can barely do anything.
With the list idea it is much more efficient and custom recipes are more diverse.

However, lists also give issues as well as squares, in Minecrafts design, squares were used because not much information needed to be conveyed, and they wanted to keep usage of space to a minimmum, as to keep sorting to a minimum. This worked too well, so many items are in fact wedged against one another that visual fatigue sets in after awhile of building on creative unless the person keeps their hotbar loaded.

However, lists with information also give issues. The exact opposite in fact, too much info and a list will go on forever, and it will ALSO take you ages to sort through the text to find what your looking for. Menu sorting can be such a pain you know. Which is why some games try to get past that by a search option, or something like Tekkit does, which is have the favored recipes on a list on the right. I am actually rather glad myself that the developers are working on their craft table, half the game really is in the way you present information to the folks playing it.

    really? how is it limiting?

if anything it is alot more compact and is easier to remember the recipes than a list.
not to mention that its a hell of alot quicker than searching through a giant list.

I wouldn't say limiting, confusing and time consuming is more like it. That crafting system drove me crazy as it basically requires a wiki to discover recipes. And then you have to remember a 3x3 shape, and number and type of items in every box for each recipe (not to mention having to lay the ingredients out manually every time). Having a crafting recipe list is much simpler and straightforward, and there most likely will be search and filter functionality to manage large numbers of recipes. This will also allow crafting using materials in storage, not just in your inventory if the devs decide to allow that.

Bigger on the inside backpack. I wonder what the explanation of that will be.

Loved the perks that different items give.BTW, it's alreayd confirmed that the schematics are related to the NPC you kill, so you can, for example, drop an Avian armor schematic from killing Avians.

    2. Thanks for the link, I saw you mentioned your previous comments in your original post but without a link I didn't find them (shall read now).

Either way, I'm really quite excited by this screenshot.

So many wonders about what the items on the list mean [IMG]
Do camo pants make you a bit invisible?
What does a "trailing coat" do?
Did anyone else notice the useless cowboy hat?
And, why the heck would anyone want a nuclear airtank?!

I like the idea of having environmental hazards. The only ones in terraria were drowning, lava, and "hot" rocks, but they added a lot of interesting gameplay workarounds in order to advance.

Radioactive hazmat suit implies that there will be Uranium mining which implies nuclear fission which implies nuclear power.
I wonder if there will be a blueprint for a nuclear reactor.

Yes I absolutely love the idea of having to deal with environmental conditions. I'm considering surrounding my base in radioactive materials to keep trespassers out...

Thats what it says there, so i guess is subject to change.

So much stuff to love in this one little screen cap.

    1. Rawhide Cowboy Hat of Significant Uselessness. Cosmetic? Maybe. Just the name makes me smile. Just awesome.
    2. Augmentation: Drag and drop an item to see the bonus effects. Ugh. I love being able to augment my gear. Just cool.
    3. Just looking at the Nuclear Hasmat Mask.
    • Perks
    • Air +10s (What is the air for? Underwater? Asteroid Exploration? Space Walks? I am betting water, but who can say?)
    • Cold Guard +20% (Anything that can make the game more immsersive is fine in my book. The fact that this is something that is being considered is really cool)
    • Poison and Radiation Guards (Poison I get. That is fairly common. But radiation protection ;))
    4. What does the trailing coat do?
    5. COMBAT MEDIC PANTS!!!!!!!!
The amount of speculation that can be preformed on this one screencap is insane.

Minor nitpick: that's a degree symbol, meaning you can survive in environments 20 degrees colder without freezing.

Oh boy, oh boy, there's even more to this game than I would have guessed. Temperature? Radiactive ore? Is Chucklefish seriously trying to make a sandbox to end all sandboxes? It seems so.

On topic: Levels will probably influence the required crafting station, meaning more advanced items need more advanced crafting methods, but it would be really nice if the same item had different capabilities depending on level, ala Borderlands. However, since the level is already included in the list, it seems unlikely, as each items seems to have a predetermined level. Still, I wonder how crafting weapons will work, then, because if they are procedurally generated, the most powerful would probably have higher levels. Will we be able to choose from a list of parts during the crafting of weapons, or will it be completely random?

What also interests me is the "Augment" slot on the lower right. It would appear we can use certain items to add bonuses during crafting.

I am very interested in the bottom left of the crafting screen. It looks like the different categories of crafting. Starting from the top and working right it looks like:
Flask (Potions), Brick (Tiles), Swords and Guns (Weapons), Helms, Body Armor and Boots (Armor), Hammer and Anvil (Tools), Question Mark (Miscellaneous),
Not sure (Explosives or Poisons due to the X?), Gear (Looks like utility belt or Jetpack), Rockets? (Ammo maybe), This one looks like a misty planet (Atmospheric tools?), Looks like a Pokeball =P (Monster capturing?), Shields (Shields).
This looks awesome. Want this game sooo bad.
