Crafting coal

We use to be able to craft coal from wood by burning it in the stone furnace. Now instead of burning ore to make ingots, they're presented as a list of schematics and we just have to have the ore in inventory to craft the ingots. Coal, however, isn't listed in the schematics. Does that mean we can no longer obtain coal via unrefined wood, or was it an oversight not to include coal in the schematic list on the stone furnace? Personally, I see no reason to remove this method of obtaining coal.

 

Given how cola-heavy planets are just below the surface, I'm not sure it's necessary to craft more.

 

It all comes down to personal preference. Deeper you go on high threat planets, the less coal you see. Just because coal isn't used as fuel anymore isn't a valid reason to remove the functionality of crafting it at a furnace. Besides, "Just mine it" isn't a valid answer for the question I asked.

 

I agree. I was a bit thrown off that you couldn't craft coal. I find it super annoying that I have to go harvest it from the ground to make any serious stacks for torches.

When I used to be able to just burn a thousand wood pieces and get returned amount of coal for the wood.

One of my favorite farm types was creating a forest of trees for resource collecting.

 

Exactly, that's what I use to do also, but now I have to go spend time digging around looking for the ore. Highly annoying is what it is.

 

I don't know what you're supposed to use Coal for after you progress past steel. I've got a couple of hundred coal I've got sitting in my inventory.

 

Coal aren't very useful anymore. Besides, you can still craft coal with unrefined wood. I think the recipe is 2 unrefined wood for 1 coal.

 

Obviously, you can't craft coal, or someone would have mentioned where you could do it at.

The fact that I have to go to a mining planet to get coal is a terrible idea, combined with not being able to make early-game tools like stone axes and picks.

 

It's in the vanilla files; 10 unrefined wood at a stone furnace.

 

I don't know what version of Starbound you have, but it's still not in there for Upbeat Giraffe Update 2.

 

You cannot craft coal in Upbeat Giraffe without mods. You could in certain previous Koala versions by burning unrefined wood at a furnace, but that was removed.

As an aside, coal is now far less useful. It's only purposes in Upbeat Giraffe are for creating torches and snowmen. It is no longer a component of making Steel, that function has been taken over by oil.

 

Ok, looks like I was wrong. Somehow my character learned that recipe, though I don't have any mods that specifically add it back. :? (now that i think about it, i used an "unlock every recipe" for that character, so that explains it)

I think coal is used to craft a few other things, such as the refinery, but that's about it. It's a shame that coal's pretty much useless now. Maybe it will be used for more in the future?

 

I don't even use coal for torches, I just make Cheap Lights for 100 pixels each.
They're brighter, don't require going out of your way to harvest wood or coal to make, and penetrate much deeper into the walls for mining trips.
And you can place them on ceilings, and underwater. So they're pretty much better in every way, assuming you have any pixels.

 

Heh, I just use the Medical Drone Mk3 from the Drones Mod. Haven't used torches in ages. :U

In fact, I have about 9 stacks of coal half of which is waitin to be refined into pixels (after I refine the 4 stacks of titanium first :I).

 

I'm still just using the light drone v3 on my main character. Is medical drone actually better light? Or what?

 

Medical drone is maybe less light, but it also heals you, which is super helpful.

EDIT: As for healing drones, I posses over 300 medical kits on me that I collected by wandering around snow planets desesperatly searching for floran prisons for me to jack all of their plantmatterstone

 

Coal may get more uses as we go along, and being able to make coal/charcoal again would be nice. There are some consumables that require coal, fireworks and the thorn grenade come to mind. Who knows, maybe we'll eventually see a small selection of craftable grenades requiring gunpowder, and hence coal. It does seem a bit odd to remove the recipe from circulation though. I understand removing in the context of Angry Koala mechanics, where coal was still ship fuel. It very nearly trivialized uranium and plutonium when you could easily make massive tree farms and make all that coal. But with coal no longer being a viable fuel source for the ship... I don't see any reason to not be able to craft it.

 

It's kind of a background issue of how ALL crafting ingredients need more stuff to make with 'em (especially odder stuff like Monster Plate, Cell Materia and Matter Blocks)...

...though I completely get not making that a priority, as most of what we'd be talking about are decor-based items and similar frippery. Hopefully we'll see more with the more frequent updates.
