So if you are a crazed farmer like me you are going to travel the universe finding every crop in game and growing it on a super-farm of unparalleled proportions. What do you do with all these different foods? A good system for food would be not only do we have the pre-existing recipes but also a system to 'experiment' with new meals. I have two loaves of bread, slices of ham, cheddar cheese, and lettuce. I combine the items into a sandwich, now this may add balance issues. You slice a loaf of bread into 16 slices. Each slice has 1/16 the power of the whole loaf. So instead of +16 health for the loaf you have 16 slices which give +1 each. Now how would this system work? You have a pot of water and you want to make soup. You could add some beef and carrots. Or what about broccoli, tomatoes, beans, and cabbage? You now have a soup with those components after adding them together. Some things either won't work at all or shouldn't be as effective as other things, like a slice of bread in a soup. This system would add incredible freedom in the meals your character has access to. To recap the idea, the foods you make would be dependent on the tool you use (Oven, Stovetop, Cutting Board, Stew Pot, etc.) and the ingredients you use. I am by no means a developer, but I feel this idea is possible and will be an excellent addition to the game.

this would probably be how you make any type of foods. For example if you wanted to make a hamburger you would need 1 piece of meat, 2 pieces of bread, 1 tomato, and 1 piece of lettuce
I believe OP speaks about the ability to mix ingredients freely and at will. This one reminds me quite similar sugestion about metallurgy and metal ores
Maybe this is already in? I mean, there's a pizza slice, and there's a full pizza. Maybe like, combining 6 pizza slices makes a whole pizza!
Yes, as the (only) cook at the SB resturant at the end of the universe, this would be really good. Here, have some poptop meatballs
Lols, yes please. The current system I'm guessing is like Monster Hunter's. I would REALLY wanna cook Spaghetti Pizza on a Seaweed platter. Please... I think the only problem is the sprites. But it would be VERY nice to be able to customize your own dishe's appearance based on your ingredients. Custom cakes, custom.... bah I should stop here
I think food is based around buffs from what I read from the updates and talk in the forums. One thing that might work is a system much like Alchemy from TES: Oblivion. Each food item has a few attributes that are positive or negative debuffs. Add too many ingredients you might get a bunch of tiny buffs and tiny debuffs. Find a good recipe you might even get just a good buff food item. Or a recipe with an extreme buff but with mild negative effects would also be considered a good recipe. To cover sprites the devs might just make all custom recipes stew or something simple. Say adding a starchy item makes it bread. Adding meat and starchy items makes a sandwich. I'm certain a formula could be made but would it be worth it to the devs? That is the question.
A relatively easy but lame way around the sprites is to give it a default icon like a question mark to represent its a custom item. Whether or not it is worth it to the devs is up to them to decide. We could go without a system for customizing food dishes but it adds to the atmosphere of the game.
Time for bananas that are inside of donuts, three of them, mixed in Potato soup with Leeks and Apricots. With a side of french fries wrapped in thick layer of grease with butter and then also wrapped inside of celery sticks with a fine, thick layer of pudding. I like the idea, and you can make the stupidest and STRANGEST dishes ever!
