Core Fragment Quest: bad design

Don't you only need Core Fragments once? I'm pretty sure you don't have to go back down... The Crystals are something completely different, and the AI even tells you to go to the Gate at the Star you are at to find out where you can get them. My only gripe is the Infinity express sells some liquid fuel with the same name, just "Fuel" not "Crystal". You have to keep doing quests in the outpost to find out where the Crystals are.

I think the op confused the "repair FTL // Mining base mission's item with core fragments and figured he needed to deep dive a 2nd time?

There's no reason to ever get core fragments more than once.

As others have said, the core fragments and E. crystals are two different things. Only need to gather them once as far as I can tell.
I also vaguely remember a mineshaft on the starter planet. Can't remember how deep it went though.

And you can make hellavators with relative ease once you can transport liquids. I like to fill mine with Healing Water to give it a refreshing glow.
Keep in mind that you will need a deep pool of water to fall in.

Went only about 1/4th of the way and it was horrible inefficient since it didn't go straight.
Only advantage if any was the free loot

I don't see anything wrong with the quest, it is quite easy actually. All you have to do is dig down get 20 crystals, which you only need once like people have said, make some rope with vines and rope your way back to the top. Thats how I did it. Sure it takes a bit of time, but you in the game you do have to mine a lot.

Ok so I remade a character and went through the quests to find it. It is the Core Fragments but the problem is that the computer will tell you it needs the Core Fragments. However, if you complete this before the quest the quest does not acknowledge that you already did this and you need to go and collect 20 more Core Fragments for the quest itself to complete.

You only need 20 if you happen to do the quests first & reached that point and then attempt to repair the thrusters. If you repair the thrusters before reaching this point of the quest then well you will need to obtain 20 more when you do reach the quest.

I feel so bad for you, I needed help to actually get through this quest. It's really miss-leading and you won't be able to beat it unless you have friends helping, you found by accident, you try literally everything, or you search it up.
Which isn't necessarily the best impression on a brand new big update. (For the Erchius crystal quest)

For the core fragment quest I never found that difficult, I just dug a hellevator while eating or something and then once I got my crystals I just killed myself. I only had about 200 pixels anyway.

The main problem though was that I had to go down twice for the Core Fragments due to the fact I apparently did things out of order... in a sandbox game. =/
Had I just did the quests rather than explore the world I wouldn't have gone through the frustration... but I didn't and I paid for it and I see that as a problem.

Yea I agree, I believe that the game should be somewhat quest based for the tutorial area and that's about it. Quests and such to progress should be more of an optional thing.
Like instead of doing a quest to become immune to radiation you could craft it with a butt-ton of materials from your current tier.
Meanwhile in the earlier stages there are a lot more context in the quests instead of making them half done and leaving people clueless.

Sandbox game usually means you don't have to do a fuff-ton of linear and boring quests to succeed.

I think if you throw all the core fragments out of your inventory and then pick them up again it should complete the quest, personally I never found the mineshaft on my planet.

What I read is that you didn't want to do the quest essentially due to poor pre planning? However I to was also thrown off by the extreme fuel price, as no one details that you have to go to a moon for fuel (unless of course you read a moons description while in navigation it tells you they have fuel)

The hellivator thing is not that big of a deal. Stock up on platforms and torches. Don't get fancy until later.

I think the Manipulator is best for this as it restricts the size to two tiles, making a nice narrow path for wood platforms. Place them based on the height of your jump

I build a few of them spread out from the landing zone in both directions. Usually with one at the base of my house as well.

Normally while build a Hellivator I branch out based on caves I find as well. I find most of my ORE veins by cave diving and not going straight down.

    TO NOTE:

I did manage to find Core fragments towards the surface surprisingly my first roll. This is not the case. They should be deep down.

I honestly feel like you shouldn't be able to get to the center of a planet so early.
It should be hot down there.
You should require heat dispersion tech to get down there. They should add pressure damage and it should also be extremely high pressure.
Core fragments should be a late game thing.

I agree to a point. The game is still way early in development. Def a good suggestion.

From my observations, the starting planet is the same for everyone.
    Or..
At least every character on your copy.
And my planet didn't require I mine down near the core for the core fragments, there was a hill-ish thing made with rather tough rock that had ~32 core crystals sitting inside of it scattered about.
I'm not sure if that's normal for everyone or not, but just exploring the entire starter planet grants a much easier and quicker solution than mining out a pit to the core that you'd have to kill yourself to get back out of.
At least on my copy of the game. Can anyone confirm that this is the case?

Its just a fetch quest, this one you get from the ship A.I., there will be much more fetch quest after that, all badly written and from Outpost folks.
The progression in this game is not even close to interesting.

My only problem with the Core Fragments is that this starter quest is the only thing you can do with them. Why can't we use them as crafting materials too?

Actually, this is true for a fair few items. Hardened Monster Plate, Matter Blocks, etc. We should be able to craft decor items, furniture, storage, etc out of them. It think it'd be pretty neat to find blueprints for a Core Chair that looks like a hellthrone, giving you a reason to get that far down again. (Also I think EVERY metal type needs an accompanying furniture set, or at least chest. Give us something to do with all that copper!)

Of course, the ability to sell these items would also help, but that's a general thing.

"The progression in this game is not even close to interesting." Most of it is unfinished framework/foundation for what I assume is much more content to come. I have learned to be patient,

But honestly. I was a "Dungeon master" for some time and can vomit better story/plot/quests. haha

But its the showcase of end results. I see only 2 kinds of quests:
    - premade missions
    -fetch quests

What happened to other kinds of quests?
Like transport NPC to planet X and help him there.
Rescue some NPC's from some location.

And why the game opens with bug catching quest and follows with coffee quest.

    They haven't been implemented yet?

The whole quest thing is kind of new.
