I have one massive suggestion for the devs and as good as your game is, it has SAME massive issue that terraria had. Connecting to my friends to play the game together is a nightmare. After nearly a WEEK of playing the game, we simply can not connect to play together. Nothing has worked, and nothing we do fixes issue, and one way we CAN play together ie hamachi like programs is SO lag ridden its like wadding through tree sap to do anything! As much as i truely like starbound only one thing i really want from the game at this point. A good netcode that doesn't require some complex third party program to just make it playable. I want to punch in my friends ip and connect with minimal effort and issues. Some may chalk this up to " ports " or " its not the devs problem " but it very much is the devs problem. Are countless devs out there have made solid netcode in there games DOESN'T require hamachi to play. that is ALL i really want from starbound at some point a solid netcode.
You don't need Hamachi to host a server. If you have knowledge about port forwarding, it can be as simple and entering an IP for a Minecraft server. Besides that, you just need the server account and password.
Really? mean like opening ports 21025? or changing port used? mean going into your router, and opening your firewall? *checks* cause i'm pretty sure i've done all of this EVEN hamachi is failing with exact same issue. No sorry but i had this same problem with terraria is an issue with netcode of the game, and was same issue with terraria. please DO not assume people arent tech savvy... i've even tried static local ip to no avail, nothing works... right now Starbound is BROKEN for multi-player. As for terraria... no matter what we did for that game we had exact same issue and we are BOTH competent in what we are doing. Issue is and has always been poor netcode.
Well i get they are indie i cant expect awesome i would from a AAA but, i do think it should work alot better then it does is all. Personally i only got terraria to play with friends, and its same for starbound AND i would love to keep supporting the devs BUT when i see this bad netcode and all issues i have to go through JUST to play the game (and not talking opening ports, or anything thats pretty standard) it just doesnt seem like its worth the hassel... i have something like 300-500 hours logged into terraria... and i can still play that game and have fun. Starbound is next progression of that sort of game and frankly i was excited for whole sci-fi star hopping fun! But while i am not upset not working now, beta is beta i think the devs need to pour alot more of there time into netcode and getting it working properly and with minimal effort of the player and save the content for after launch or even expansions/dlc. i'd be MORE then happy to buy DLC for this game, but not having a solid netcode is a deal breaker for me... and my friends.
You realize for those games you dont need to do all this stuff for, the reason is because the company is paying there own money to host servers out of a machine or something? Im pretty sure chucklefish doesnt have that kind of money so you have to host the server on your actual device, which in order for your pc to allow people to connect, you have to port foward. or use hamachi which creates an online lan network. (please take whatever i say with a grain of salt, im no expert and could be wrong)
I've never had a problem getting people connected to me, or connecting to other people. This sounds like a user issue and not a game issue. If you are interested you can try connecting to me when i get home tonight 6pm est.
I've been told by a few friends that when they try to join a server, sometimes they have to attempt connecting more than once. After that, they're usually able to play.
Some do but not all of them do, magicka sure didnt and i had no issues after i forwarded ports a fairly easy task to accomplish, ports forwarded with terraria? to bad still wont connect and its same with starbound... i dont personally think i should need a third party program to connect. If one is needed then it should be supplied by the developer in some fashion, and not expect its players to do the work for them. I have... Forwarded ports Lowered firewalls(on router) applied a local static ip removed server passwords changed ports via config and cfg files reinstalled... I could go on and on and on and on...and on about the various things i've done and tried to do here, and still refuses to work. The game boasts multi-player if i cant get multi-player to work because of a bad netcode and over all design isn't that false advertising? just saying... some of us expect to be able to jump in and play the game, it becomes worse when dont have the tech experience i do. Been around PC's since i could walk i know them in and out, and i know enough about networking to know how to open ports and such, and fiddle with my firewall... its not that hard. Yet... this game and terraria still won't work? i'm sorry it BOGGLES my mind!
I don't want to sound like an Ass, but are you sure you did it right, like i said, I've set it up and had multiple people connect to me and it only took a single try, and i have connected to other people on a first attempt. Its not bad netcode if it works for the vast majority of people, at a certain point the issue because less about the game and more about the person/computer having the problem. Have you been able to connect to other people?
You say you have port forwarded but have you tested it to see its actually working. (Test your port here http://www.canyouseeme.org/ ) I had the same issue but i fixed it like this!. My Similar Issue Well first of all I have a modem/router combo, and I had my modem's Wifi dissabled, and plugged in a Asus router to use my Modem as a bridge, and My asus as the main hub.. this way i had better wifi signal. OK so I go to my Router settings by typing local IP in browser, and my Asus router poped up, i port forwarded correctly and all... but still NO ONE can connect..HMMMMM So I tested my port at http://www.canyouseeme.org/ and the website did not communicate with the port So what was wrong? Well I did forward my port properly, but i onyl did it on my Asus router. OH YEA!, ok so I disconnected my Asus Router, and connected to just my Modem/Router that my ISP gave me. I Forwarded the Port, and tried http://www.canyouseeme.org/ yet again, and YAY I can got a responce, So i got my friend to try and Connect to my server, and YAY IT WORKED!!! There was still one problem though!!!! I REALY wanted my Asus Router's Wifi range in my house. I was hoping that now my Modem/Router and my Asus router were both port forwarded that it would now work!, So i reconnected my Asus Router, and made sure the port was still Forwarded properly then tried http://www.canyouseeme.org/ again, and it FAILED, What The **** is going on! So I still have yet to figure out why my Asus router is not working! MY FIX! I plug my Desktop into my ISP's Modem/router, and plug my Asus router into the modem also. then host the server from my desktop thats pluged into my ISP Modem. and now everyone can connect, and i have wifi. I can even connect to my server while on my laptop through the asus router now. I hope this helps in some way ANOTHER Issue it might be is that when I did the port forward the first time.. I accidentally didnt select my proper PC on the network... by default it chooses the top of the list in alphabetical order to any pc that has connected to your network. You very well might have did the port forward for the wrong PC! simple overlook. Also if you do not have a static IP, then it will be changing every time you restart the modem, so try this https://www.noip.com/sign-up This website is amazing and you only need the free version. basically you download the program, then run it.. you pick a host name like Lokai.ServeGame.com and then it connects your current IP to that address.... so when ever you host a VOIP server or game server, or anything... you can give people the address of Lokai.ServeGame.com to connect to instead of your IP that changes all the time.
