From the looks of it, id say it serve no purpose other than decoration as its wrapped around the main structure of the ship and the bone is merely attached on.
Maybe its an ordinary vine that regrows after every re-entry/liftoff.
Maybe it moves with re-entry / liftoff (kind of like landing gear) to protect itself during events it could not survive.

So many possibilities, it may not be made of anything special.

I'm not against bioships, many of the sci-fi shows I like have them.

  5. Wait....you're gong to play as a Floran? ;)

In all seriousness, I like the ship variations. The way various races design ships help immerse you in that culture. Its one of the things I love so much about Star Trek. The Borg ships are especially memorable. The vines on the Floran ship give the actual ship life, and it makes me feel as though the Florans have a real connection with their ships, not unlike the cylons, from BSG.

I like to think of the Hylotl ship as a giant fish, rather than a ship with some tacky fins slapped on the side, clearly the Hylotl have bred huge space faring fish then hollow out their insides, keeping the beast alive so that they may travel through the stars in its warm gooey innards.

    oH OKAY.
NOT AT ALL SADISTIC AND KIND OF CRUEL.

But in all seriousness, that sounds awesome.
Peta would have a fit though.

It's an assimilated human ship, I don't see the problem myself.

There is somewhat of a point in the seeming lack of any plants that could survive the cold(like -200f in orbital space), dry (no water), vacuum(no CO2 or other gasses) of space, microorganisms maybe, but not fully developed plants.. But then again who knows what's out there on other planets.

IMHO the Floran ship is no where near as silly as the Hylotl ship

Well, time to blow your mind. Aerodynamics refers to how something reacts in the presence of air by definition, es correcto no? Well space has no air, hence ship design is not limited by having to be aerodynamically sound. You can literally put engines and fuel in a metal block and it will fly just as well as something shaped like an X-Wing from Star Wars so long as both have the same weight and power ratios.

Since the Starbound ships do not land anything can go shape-wise. Materials though, well the Floran ship looks like metal with a garden inside at least. The Avians are rocking that plywood with some 4x4 beams! Structurally sound as long as you use it as only a shed!

I like the floran ship. The only one that seems out of place is the glitch ship.

I like some ships more than others. But, in general, I like the fact that each race ship is quite different.

The fact that there's such a discussion over the differences tells me they've accomplished what they set out to do. Maybe it's true that you can't please everyone, but everyone seems to have found at least something that they like.

  16. Ah, very true. Although they would've had to be launched at some point, wouldn't they? Unless of course they were built in space in some space station.

To some people replying: (not to you T-bone)
So that we stay more on topic here, the point of my post isn't to say "I don't like Floran ships because they're green."
The point I'm trying to make is that I think some of the races' ships have differences that are a little exaggerated.
Although, I'm pretty convinced that it's fine after so many helpful people posted. [IMG]

"its a video game" will never be a legit reason I do think that the ship is a little overdone maybe little less green and give it more of a post-end of the world feel to go with the lore that they attacked then added plants to it to keep it together

    They actually do
If you look closely to all the ships. Every single one is unique, except the floran 1. This 1 is infact, a copy of the human ship, except it has vines.
Thus it fits perfectly with their lore. They killed the humans, perhaps covered it in vines to:
    1. State their faction
    2. Vines are plants to (family)
    3. They learned how the ship works via knowledge aquired from the vines
    4. The vines allow them to use the ship, even if they don't fully understand it. Thanks to some alterations

There are plenty of possible explanations as you can see ;)
I personally think that the ships do make alot of sense.
Avian: a bird, they live for their gods and they build it in his image to honor him
Hylotl: they live underwater and thus know how the fin mechanism works best. They might have adapted it to make it functional for air travel
Apex: similair to humans but more advanced. After all they did learn from us (I think not sure about their lore background)
glitch: They live after their medieval times, only logical they use somewhat old equipment and the ship turns out to look somewhat steampunky
    novakid: unknown ship
human: This 1 is kinda obvious :p

I honestly think they did a great job on the ship design

  19. Yes, only after posting the thread I realised that it is identical to the human ship in shape. (and I don't blame you for not reading all three pages of text)
You bring up some solid points, although for the Hylotl one it was pointed out that these ships didn't need to be functional for air travel, since space has no air.

But yeah, I guess all of this is a way of expressing your race's culture. (at least in sci-fi, it is)

The only problem i haw with this ship is those BONES outside of the ship... they look lame and stupid, they haw no value, hope we can remove those.
Oh and there is races in sy-fy lore that "grow" there ships, and they basically space traveling trees that are shaped like a space ship, so if that is possible i dont see the problem with some veins infested ship.
