Modding Discussion Community Mega-Mod (Not a Mod Pack)

    Hi Starbounders!

    My Crazy/Stupid idea!
    I had this idea, kinda crazy, but would be amazing if we put it into practice. Basically I had an idea to create one mod, that adds in "much needed" mechanics, items, quests, and whatever else that most people use. It would require modders to compile or create new mods.

    My idea was that there would be one team, or separate (depending on how many people are interested) that would work on various areas of the game. This would also be a great opportunity for new modders to get some experience with more advanced modders.

    Theme:
    The Theme for this mod would be "Guardians of Galaxy". I plan to incorporate races, ships and even the city "Knowhere" as featured in the movie where they find the "Orb". I plan to get a group together to contribute more ideas and I will update the OP with the latest content and possible theme changes.

    And my last point would be that even if you have released a mod and feel you cant particpate because your mod does the same thing, we still want you!

    I just wanna clear up one thing, this is not for a mod pack (However modders may choose to use assets from their own mods to help), it is one mod that has the features of many different mods.

    So what are you waiting for Starbounders? Come and join in on the fun and lets make a masterpiece!

  2. Unless you have some sort of direction you wish to take this that is clearly explained, very few modders will join. Otherwise this will just turn into a clusterfuck of people wanting to add ideas and everyone disagreeing with each other. Give some examples, give some diagrams, give us SOMETHING to work with. As of right now its just "HEY GUYS! Lets make a mod!" and thats it.

    Hey thanks for your reply, I understand and agree completely, and I'm still trying to figure out a direction for it myself. I will edit my post once I've thought of that ahaha :) I was thinking new movement mechanics such as a triple jump or extended sprint, a new HUD with a more "Hi-Tech theme. Also I had an idea, kind of inspired by @VoxFrame, to give starbound the Guardians of the Galaxy feel. I love that movie (Don't care what anyone says) and I think adding in a couple of races, a Bounty Hunter Station/quest line and possibly a "Metropolis" Dungeon. Of course most f this is just random ideas and I'm not sure how realistic my expectations are.

    Ah yes Kayuko and I have had a record of helping one another with mods, but I do feel that she does a lot and probably wouldnt have the time, thanks for the reply.

    What exactly was your mod again? Also I feel my art ability is now somewhat lacking of modding standards :p

    This sounds like a great idea, and quite frankly I'm surprised at how little it's been attempted. As I've said previously, I'm very new to the modding community, so I'm not sure how well I'd be able to contribute, but if you get some people on board, and a stable foundation idea of what you plan on this mod coming out to, I'd love to participate.

    Thanks for the reply! Yeah, to be honest I did have a race under development but I'm afraid I just cant get anything to work. My main specialty is recipes, creating new items and materials and also doing the JSON stuff. Also I have no plans of being the "Head" of this mod because I feel that just results in difference of opinions and arguments. I do have a few good ideas and I was thing it doesn't strictly have to be Guardians of the Galaxy, but that would be the main theme.

    it was supposed to start of as a somewhat regular Furniture and Building materials mod and was planned to expand into a modproject like Avali over time.
    But since I basically lost all data of progress when my laptop went up in flames, if there ever really was any, I'd have to start from step 2 all over.
    (aka making the actual mod, since plans were handwritten and are in my drawer on my other table.)

    Also I am sorta unable to do much of the spriting myself as of now, since this computer proved incompatible with my old programms...

    Ah I see, well if you wanna contribute to this mod you're more than welcome to. I'm keen for new ideas and input!

    Then I suppose this would probably be better as a modpack then. Well, sort of. Alright, here's my idea: Just try to figure out some of the core mechanics and etc. you want in this project, and see if you can get people to work individually on those core elements. If you're looking for Guardians of the Galaxy content, I'd be more than happy to assist on that area, as I intend on making more Guardians of the Galaxy and Marvel Sci-fi content soon enough. And then, see what you would/wouldn't prefer in the modpack. Process of elimination. That way, even if people don't get their content in the modpack, they'll still atleast have a mod to call their own.

    I've read through your updated "Plan".
    And my advice is to make a more solid plan.
    What races do you want, WHAT do you want to add to the game. (Not in detail, but themewise.)


    One idea I can hand you though: Why not make one race that is many?
    Let the players choose from different kin of a species or several species by like adding different heads with the "Hair" option and/or different Body features and THEN color em to sell em as one "Collective" of races that share culture and technology rather than making 6 different races just to notice you can't make up enough content for all of em.

    Thanks for the feedback, are you sure new to modding? Seem pretty experienced to me :p I'll spend most of my weekend drafting up a detailed plan, and yeah I do agree I should probably make it into a instead. I'll start compiling a list of mechanics, ideas and most importantly the direction I want this to take. As Juno stated below, would you be willing to help me create a multi-race thingy. I can get the customizable ship sorted out, I just need a few artists for sprites.

    That is actually an awesome idea, and the race can use the build your own ship mods to give players even more of a cunstomised feel to their "own" race. However this race would take A LOT of work. Not to mention that the heads would have to be proportionate to the body and sprite work behind it would be MASSIVE. Thanks for the idea, I might get started on that but I'm totally not very good at creating races so I'll definitely need more backup from at least 5 or so modders.

    @Relten ignore the OP, but would you be willing to help make a "race that is many" as Juno said? Or do you know of anyone interested in helping out?

    Hmm....I suppose I could help, I'm just not sure how this race of "Many" will work properly.

    Just summon me again once you figure out how to centralize the race for easy work.....Besides....why not just create multiple species?
    (currently assisting two other race mods as well :rofl:)

    Not new to modding, just to Starbound modding. ;) I've been modding games like Don't Starve & other such in the genre for a while now. As well, I've been downloading a lot of Starbound mods to analyze what they do right/wrong according to the community, learn from their mistakes, so to say. And thanks for the kind words, as always. And I think the multi-race thing would be a great idea. Whatever races you had in mind I'd be happy to help with when I get the chance. I'll probably be creating the Guardians of the Galaxy characters themselves on my own time for modding, of course.

    Because eac species would need an own set of Lore, items, Culture stuff etc.
    This way you can save all that work.
