So like it had been said before i know wipes were to be expected but we should at least be able to keep our ship seeing as i am currently working with the 5th tier of sector X crafted gear i've put allot of work into my char aswell as completely redecorating my ship with rare and awesome items

Yeah, but you'll get one shot in tier 3 with that armor.

This is a beta, saves will break! If you want to preserve your "hard work" then wait for final release, or don't update! If you want it all, then figure out how to migrate your ship save into the new format (Expect a ton of glitches if you do this)!

I'd like it to stay too tbh, it just needs fine tuning. Increasing potential max hp of monsters as the tiers go on while reducing the drastic penalty difference in armour penetration lvls would have been nice. More ways to get armor other than crafting would help the issue a lot too, I don't know why they never made procedurally generated sets to fill in the gaps between crafted ones

That's unfortunate then. We all knew it was coming and begging for the stuff not to be wiped now doesn't help anything. I'm sure the devs are trying to keep those wipes to a minimum the best they can and if you can't live with losing all your awesome gear you should've just waited for a later stage of the beta.

Letter to developpers (TL;DR at bottom ... devs, please take the time to read this through though ... please)

Hello, just signed up. Nice Captcha, I like the bunny.

I just skimmed through 40 pages of this thread before posting and my feelings about the upcoming patch have changed a bit on the way.

I'm very worried about the changes you are implementing. I have started playing Starbound on wednesday and I have enjoyed your game tremendously as it is. It is challenging yet I know that if I prepare well enough, I can go anywhere.

When I first read the announcement earlier today, I was mad. Not because my character will be reset. I don't mind starting over. But because you are changing a very elegant and concise system for displaying weapon damage stats.
The way I understand the way the AP/Dmg system to work is : ( AP / Armor * weapon damage = HP damage).
Now if I understand the changes correctly, the harder a world is, ennemies will have more HP so I will need to change weapons for higher and higher damage weapons. As I progress through the game, I will probably be needing weapons doing tens of thousands of points of damage, cluttering the weapon description window with way too many digits (kind of like that phrase: "tens of thousands of points of damage", inelegant) instead of a 1 to 100 progression in AP.

I have read some posts saying that the new system will bring more surprise as not all mobs will have 100 HP ...
Not true. Not all mobs have 100 HP. IIRC, I've seen birds with 60 HP and I think I saw a few instances where I did over 100 dmg on underleveled planets.

The current AP system actually helps me choose a weapon. Supposing most mobs on a given planet have 100 hp, I prefer to have a fairly fast melee weapon that will do 25 dmg. The current system lets me look for weapons doing around 25 dmg with AP similar to the planet level I'm going. To me 25 dmg has meaning and it's meaning will stay the same throughout the game. With the new system, I'll go to a tier 2 medium difficulty planet and I'll get a weapon with an attack speed I like, doing say 250 dmg. Then when I move to a hard planet, I'll get a weapon with similar attack speed, doing say 350 dmg. "The number's bigger so it's better !!!" That's all the meaning the dmg stat will have on weapons.

I have also seen people complaining that there is something wrong with the armor system, that they get one shot all the time.
The way I understand the armor rating of a character to be calculated is as the average of the armor rating of each piece :
(Boot armor + Chest armor + Head armor)/3 = Armor rating.
Using this formula, you can get iron + iron + silver = 6.6, iron + silver + silver = 8.3.
I use tier 1 armor values because I have just entered tier 2 today. What I'm saying is that it is possible to get armor ratings at least similar to pretty much every world you visit and it is possible to work you way up to full silver armor.

Now, I have gotten one shot, while wearing full iron armor( 5 AR), plenty of times in a USCM penal colony on a lvl 5 ice world by prisoners with big hammers ... Nothing wrong with that, I was hasty and tried to sneak a hit instead of blocking and counter attacking. Shields are not for show (although some of them look very nice).
I've seen other complaining about getting shot by bandits and getting knocked back. The planet I started on had a bandit camp with 2 gunners on one side. I got killed pretty quickly when I first went exploring; as I should have. I went the other way gathered enough iron to make an anvil, a shield and a short sword and I went back and made short work of those 3 bandits.

Now for the other aspect of the coming changes : not numerically rating the planets within each tier.
I was against it, now I think it doesn't really matter, the easy, medium, hard rating is sufficient to give me an idea of the level of gear I'll need to survive on a given planet. It's not a change that would negatively impact my enjoyment of the game, it may even enhance it (who knows). But I still want to know what biome I'm getting into (if I go to an ice planet, i'm bringing much much much unrefined wood and coal).

Now comes a comment on the previous patch (the one with the snow infantry armor).
I understand that the 13 AR on it was probably a mistake, that's not what this is about.
And it's just my opinion but I think that giving it a heat rating as to completely nullify the need for warmth at night on an ice planet is exagerated.
When I visited the USCM penal colony on the lvl 5 ice world, it was so cold that I lost heat as fast as I gained it when standing next to a camp fire. I had so much fun !!! It was epic, running around from campfire to campfire, preparing heated areas for fighting prisonners ... The heat loss mechanic is one of the things that make this game great and unique. while I understand that not all people might enjoy having their character freeze to death within a minute of leaving the fire I think they should still loose heat albeit more slowly. (even all dressed up, it's cold outside at minus 30 C in Canada) Once again that's just my opinion, I'll probably just ignore the arctic gear in game and just carry a bunch of campfires anyways I had too much fun.

Now I feel that most issues people have with the game mechanics is that they don't understand them. Rather than change the whole system, wouldn't it be simpler to include a brief tutorial familiarising the player with game mechanics ? " please hit this dummy with an armor rating of 1, now hit the one next to it that has an armor rating of 2. Notice that the dummy with AR2 only got half the damage that AR1 got" or something like this ?
I feel that the changes to the damage mechanics will most definitely affect negatively my enjoyment of this great game.
Please don't ruin this for me.

A Glitch lost among the stars.

PS : If I got it wrong with the mechanics of damage calculation or armor rating calculation, please let me know how it works, a quick search on google didn't turn up anything.

    PPS : is it ((AP-AR)+1)*dmg ?
TL;DR : DON'T DO IT ! elegant, concise, yada yada explain how it works. Great game !

I'd like to say that half of these posts make absolutely no sense at all.

I see, "We want big numbers!" But these are posts calling for smaller HP pools, and smaller damage amounts, but 100 as the max threat level for planets. These are also the posts rejecting higher damage numbers, higher HP pools, and lower threat levels. I don't understand these arguments at all.

Another thing I'd like to throw out is the way I interpreted the change to planets. The way I saw it, threat levels would be reduced to 10, but that a Threat Level 1 planet in the Beta sector was more difficult than a Threat Level 10 planet in the Alpha sector. This would essentially give 40 levels of planets total with the release of the DELTA sector. On top of this, there would be three tiers of monsters: easy, medium, and hard. These would be a difficulty scaling in between the threat levels. For example, a Hard monster on a Threat Level 2 Alpha Sector planet would be slightly easier to kill than an Easy monster on a Threat Level 3 Alpha Sector planet. That's what I gathered at least, and I am content with this.

Also, please tell me, can anyone actually give any evidence that Armor Pen or No Armor Pen is somehow more "sophisticated," or "unique" than other RPG systems? There are plenty of games that take level threshold of weapons and players into account that then dictate whether a weapon that SAYS it can deal 100 damage does even above 10 damage. Armor on enemies is not new. It isn't new at all. Please stop acting like this is the most glorified and imaginative system that has ever existed.

All I need to say is, I love this game. I love the diversity of it and the random level generation. I love the biomes and climate changes. I'm just wondering if anyone else is experiencing major lag during rain poor? Overall I've enjoyed majority of the game so far. I still have so much to explore! Can't wait for next update. :)

When I read the second paragraph of the update, I lol'd because I had just described the damage system to my friend in almost exactly that manner. I like the armor penetration system, simply because it's so foreign to the way I normally associate damage dealing that I've been experimenting and learning it much like the whole IV/EV system in Pokemon. i.e. the mysteriousness of the damage system is what gives me a reason to explore the weapons and armor in ways that aren't just GIVE ME THE BIGGEST ONE THERE IS. Ya'll whiners are just scared of change!

Seriously though, this game has been super fun. I'm sure it will still be fun after the update, and you guys are doing a great job.

There's only one thing I want from the Devs: Be careful which comments you think are important. Shitty vocal minorities ruin games so fucking fast. Don't be afraid to not listen to some assholes who band together just to shit up games in development.

How is it elegant and concise? Plus you will need to have to change weapons anyway. Currently: Higher planets = higher armor on mobs => needs more armorpen to kill (aka better weapons)
New system: higher planets = higher hp on mobs => needs more dmg to kill (aka better weapons)
in both cases you'll have to upgrade your weapon or kill stuff very slowly

With the current system you have to try to figure out the armor rating of the enemy, then try to find a weapon that you think has high enouhg penetration to deal good dmg, then test yaddayadda
with the new system you just have a good upgrade stat to work with: dps
