First I'am glad that you guys are working on the combat now instead of later.

Second I would like to see an in-game notepad to write down all the Coordinates of those solar systems I want to return to as well as the ability to move around the
ships windows, ship locker and 3D printer.

BTW I use a Nvidia card as well, so far so good.

Are we going to get a warning when this character reset is done?
    Because if it's possible I'd like to store their stuff in a chest on multiplayer server so I don't lose it ;w;

You could always take the QQ about the character wipe differently - people are SO excited about Starbound that they're too busy desperately wanting to play it, getting into it and investing in their characters to pay attention to it being a beta. It may make some people upset, sure, but it just goes to say how great of a game that Starbound is? xD

YES! I knew I was forgetting something, thanks Azreth. The notepad would be amazing, I had the same thought earlier today. I'm not asking for one anytime soon- I know you guys have your priorities straight- but a notepad months down the road would be perfect. Keep up the fine work :)

My experience with MP is that the server just acts as a conduit to access the worlds of other players. no different worlds saved on the server.

Here's how i hope things are going to be done with the leveling system.

instead of level 1-100, its Sector A, level 1-10 (tier 1). Sector B, Level 1-10 (tier 2). and so on. that way your weapons could have a "tier" grade so a player would know where the weapon is the most effective.

    Here's an example.

    Sword
    tier 2
    damage-25
    speed-1.1

That means on Sector B, levels 1-10, the sword would do 25 damage to all monsters.
But maybe use a multiplier for the lower tiers, and a dividend for the upper tiers. Maybe going down to tier 1 with a tier 2 sword would mean that you do 25+(25x.5) more damage and going to tier 3 would mean 25-(25x.5), going to tier 4 would mean 25-(25x.4), tier 5 25-(25x.3)
(Numbers were used as an example, would need tweaking)

That way the weapons get useless rather quickly and the challenge is still there and you don't have crazy numbers

You could do something similar with monsters and the armor, but I'm not entirely sure how to make that work and i am very tired.. What does everybody think?

New character = new everything, at this moment the only way to transfer items would be to give them to a different player.

In other news, I thought the armor penetration system was completely unintuitive. I think anyone who claims they immediately knew how it worked didn't really look at some of the weapon stats. I got a dagger at one point that had 10 Armor Pen, but did 5 damage. Okay, so, did that make it stronger than my dagger that had 4 armor pen and 18 damage? Was armor pen based on percentages? What? Glad to see it's changing in to 10 levels per sector (unless it's different than that I haven't read every single post) and that HP will change.

On that note, what about character stat changes? Will HP be increased/able to be increased? How about other stats? Is there a planned leveling system? Will there be more varied tech abilities/upgrades in the future? Will we be able to eventually equip 4 tech at once? Even if people could point me to various posts I'd be happy to read them, as digging through all these posts is a bit difficult sometimes, and I may miss some info. I just picked up Starbound the day of beta, so I am not aware of finer details or earlier mentioned info just yet.

I agree with suggestions that the first boss is a bit silly for melee-go'ers. Unless you find a certain planet that has a certain vendor that sells guns, you don't have much ranged abilities except for the bow, which is pretty poor. Also, I feel bows are largely neglected and are only suited as hunting items, making it (at least almost) impossible to gain pixels when using them against monsters. Maybe bows should also be considered as a possible weapon of choice? Lastly on that note, bullet/arrow velocity at this point in time seems extremely slow. Don't know if that will be changed later, but bullets feel oddly slow at times.

I don't really want the character wipe, but I feel it's just a matter of writing down all the coordinates to places so I can make my rounds and explore again. I love my character, but I've yet to encounter anything that was unique or one-of-a-kind. You know, something that I would never be able to acquire on any other planet ever. There are thousands and millions of them, after all. Maybe I missed something, who knows? On that note, I agree with many, many suggestions that a Captain's Log or a notepad of some sort to record coordinates with would be wonderful. Then again, I could understand the difficulty of making such a thing because it would require quite a bit of space. Also, will signs be a thing in the future, such as on Minecraft or Terraria? Will we eventually be able to leave notes or messages behind on planets? I think in terms of multiplayer it would be a wonderful way to leave behind a bit of your own mark on the planets you have visited, even if some might end up saying, "Ha ha, I was here first and already took all the stuff."

Also, again, tech seems in... low abundance, I suppose. I've met some people who have been fairly lucky at finding three or four pieces, but I'm not interested in getting handed tech like it's unrefined wood from any old tree. I mentioned it earlier, but what bothers me is the lack of variety of tech. I've only seen/heard of tech that simply adds effects that you can take advantage of. Will there be additional tech in the future that may add passive effects? It seems like a pretty interesting system, so I'd like to see more.

Thanks for a great game that I could sink endless hours into! Keep up the awesome work!

I believe the character wipe is a great idea and this update seems very interesting. Also, I can't wait to test! I wanted to change my Apex to a Floran anyway, so this will be a great update for me, I know that many are not happy about it, but you shouldn't play if you don't want to have your hard work wiped. It's a Beta game, not finished and you will need to expect changes! And On-Topic, I'm happy about this update! :D

I also would like to see a leveling system implemented into Starbound, and the choice to want it for your character or not. That would be the best thing ever, honest! :)

You've been warned numerous time yet you didn't listen. Get used to it and TEST the game. You're supposed to be reporting bugs, not going for a joy ride :p.

Loving the game so far and looking forward to the combat changes, hopefully this will mean more variety of armor choice, as the rarity of blueprints and then platinum ore is one of the major setbacks in game progression right now.

My only gripes about the game are that there's no way to tell from orbit if a planet has any kind of sentient life, being able scan and get a report saying sentient life detected in eastern/western or subterranean zones of the planet would be amazing, Same for ore, if I can travel FTL surely my ship can give a mineral/bio reading of a planet?. Another thing is the only time it usually even feels sci-fi ish is when I'm on my ship. The lack of any type of early game guns plus being stuck underground for hours with a primitive pickaxe really detracts from the whole sci fi thing vibe, I never found a gun until I was in the late gamma sector, though I can understand you want people to start from scratch and earn the nice tools, having a junky old phaser or some kind of gun at the beginning would be neat.

It would also be awesome to have rare orbital stations around some worlds to visit, maybe trading ones, though this is no doubt part of the plan for the game later.

Keep up the good works guys :v

I do not have the fastest Computer/laptop. I only run 20 frames and I don't even use Razor. But I'm glad that I, at least, get 20 fps. Just remember, it is a Beta, the game might be optimized/better stuff added for better performance.

wouldn't mind a wipe. will be sad to see FalconPunch go, but I wanted to try some other races too.

Eh, your definition of Open and mine differ, paying money to purchase something and then getting access to the beta, and open beta are not the same thing to me, open beta to me means to get into the beta all you have to do is ask to play the beta, no purchase required to get in.... in technicality yes it is open in the since that you are guarantied in if you purchase, but that is not the same thing as "Hey come try out the beta, no commitment required, help us bug test the game and see if you want to buy it" , saying buying the game lets you into the beta makes it an open beta to me is like saying that the person down the street is having an open house to sell the house, but to be allowed entrance into the house to look at it you need to pay a $50 entrance fee, its not really an open house if its restricted in any way even by something as simple as money, and that's why I disagree with your definition of an open beta, since though everyone in the world can play the beta if they purchase it, that doesn't make it open, that just makes it a closed beta with an easy entrance barrier if you know you are going to purchase the game anyways.

Excellent. I hope that platinum can be found not only in chests, as I never found it underground. And guns can be found a bit more often, as I found only one instrument for all the beta.

Its open beta because there isnt an overly limiting NDA. You get to watch streams and read blogs about performance and game play before making the choice to enter. Access to the beta is pre-purchase just like the other 20-30 titles kicking around steam. I think what they have done is the best solution don't want another Diabolic III still in beta one year after release :).

We get to give feedback the video footage is something to back up our claims and helps chucklefish bug fix.

I'm a bit unsure about the change regarding levels. The removal of monster armor sounds good, but perhaps we're losing a bit of variety in levels?

I'd kind of like there to be a bit more of a gradient than just 'easy', 'medium', and 'hard' monsters for an entire sector. (Or if they still do vary a bit health/damage-wise within difficulties, we could keep the level indicator as a measure of this.) I'm also going to be a bit disappointed if all planets in a sector have exactly the same surface difficulty.

I guess what I want to propose is this:
Planets have three difficulty ratings per sector. Easy Alpha planets have level 1&2 monsters on the surface, increasing gradually to level 5 monsters by the time you reach the core. Medium planets have level 4&5 monsters on the surface, increasing to level 8. Hard planets have level 7&8 mobs on the surface, increasing to level 11 (or just more layers of 10 if there's going to be some kind of tier issue with drops.) At night, surface difficulty increases by 1 level (e.g. level 2&3 on easy Alpha planet, 5&6 medium, 8&9 hard.) Add 10 levels per sector as usual.

What we end up with is a distribution like this (layers may or may not be equally thick):
    _____________________Alpha Sector
    ____Easy________________Medium______________Hard
    1-2 (2-3 Night)________4-5 (5-6 Night)________7-8 (8-9 Night)
    ____2-3__________________5-6_________________8-9
    ____3-4__________________6-7_________________9-10
    ____4-5__________________7-8________________10-11
    _____5___________________8___________________11_____
If a planet's not that deep (IDK if this is a thing or not,) the lower levels get cut off (i.e. it doesn't rescale so you can get stronger monsters sooner.)

Players in full copper armor should be able to manage the damage of monsters up to level 5 with bandages (like 30% of max health per hit at that point.) Iron (racial) handles up to level 8 (similarly 30%,) and Silver handles up to level 11. Unarmored players should be able to handle level 2 monsters. Regarding weapons, I'll just describe bows. Standard bow one-shots a level 2 monster at full charge, kills a level 5 in five shots. Iron bow one-shots a level 5 monster, kills a level 8 in five.

Maybe some of the numbers need tweaking, but hopefully you get the idea.

Let me start off by saying I'm not happy with the way you're changing the system. It seems very standard-rpgish and I have countless games to draw on for such a thing. I picked this game because it's different, and poses a challenge. Sure, figuring the Armor Penetration system was tricky, but when you figured it out, it was very rewarding! Sure, armor wasn't great, but that meant skill superseded the amount of resources you had. I found that with those extra resources I could spend time sprucing up my ship, updating my 3D printer library, and buying blueprints from villagers.

If people are having this much trouble understanding the concept, write a tutorial in the game, don't revamp the wonderful engine you put in. I love its diversity, and I love the fact that the levels go to 100. And while a "difficulty radar" for monsters would be useful, I found having to figure out what I can and can't beat to be very rewarding in itself. Do I have to avoid these enemies? Do I have to dodge their attacks? Can I just hack through them? I ask these questions on every new planet I land on.

In my opinion by taking away the combat system you have in place, you're taking away a good chunk of what makes Starbound so good, and sets it apart from other games of it's genre. I think you're dealing with a large number of knee-jerk reactions to a new system that some people don't understand. Sure that can be frustrating, but so is learning anything new for the first time.

Addressing the issue with the throwing weapons, I think you should have scaled varieties, with different names. This will maintain their usefulness in later sections of the game.
