Well, sounds like things will be more balanced this time around and considerably more explorable! IT'S THE PERFECT TIME FOR TESTING, AS LONG AS I CAN GET THE GAME!

Two days, right? I'm halfway through the download, [700mb] and the clock is marking... A day and two hours. That's not counting disconnections and steam being a troll. If i can at least get the game before the update... >_<

Anyway, truth be told, the armor penetration may have seemed the good idea at first, but yeah, this makes things much simpler, i'm sure. Generally, the lower the numbers used in a game, the easier it is to understand. Values don't get to 10k? Good. Values barely get to 1k? WAY BETTER. It's great to see large numbers flying on the screen, but balance is what the game needs right now.

Like a Phoenix. My character shall rise from the ashes and start anew. This also sounds pretty great!

If its in beta, why not open a creative server/gamemode so everyone can test stuff?

Are we going to get saplings or some way to replant trees? It'd be nice if trees spread commonly on planets so they dont disappear so easily.

Currently every regular mob in the game has 100 hp, so you'd never have seen anything higher than that other than on a boss you vastly overpower. With this change we may eventually get to see numbers bigger than 100, which would be great, because right now it just adds to the artificial feeling.

I know you guys said that wipes are possible, but in the meantime you could possibly create script that logs all the items we have and updates every time you save and quit, so when the wipe happens all of your stuff will be restored. I don't know if that is possible but hey-just my suggestion.

I'm currently up to Gold, Gamma sector (I know right) and I don't mind being wiped, let the wiping begin!

I understand that with the changes and editing it would be easier to just wipe everything, but it would be so sad!

    Oh dear lord, not this!
This guy must get a hard on playing Diablo 3, but theres a reason i hate the game.
It loses all sense of reality, and yes, this is a science fiction game, it does NOT require large numbers.

I would still like a resolution to this access violation problem. I haven't been able to play the game at all and personally it's starting to upset me :C

Trees respawn on their own, you can't deforest a planet currently.

Posts like this make me giggle. Just because you cant find weapons, doesnt meen its too difficult. Maybe you should be smart enough to go & google "Alpha sector gun vendor". Trust me, its not hard, the ships are ALWAYS within a minutes walk from the start. Please learn to use your resources before trying to chime in.

We need a comms or 'bulletin board' in each cluster with possible contacts, quests, and vendors. That would simplify the search for certain targets like firearms vendors.

You shouldn't really need to use external resources to find core elements of the game. Whether early-game gun merchants are "a core element of the game" or not is debatable, but I imagine to a lot of people it'd feel like cheating to go and stop off at the same planet eeeverybody else does to pick up a high-powered early-game weapon.

Yup, something like that wouldn't go amiss. It'd let you keep playing in your own universe without needing to be reminded that you can always go rummage around for useful worlds while still letting you have more direction than just point and pray.

Anyway: More transparency in how our equipment works is always good! I admit to having been mystified as to why armor pen was making so much difference. Hopefully the condensed ten-level system will still be clear as to which planets/enemies fall where within the easy/medium/hard spectrum of each digit. (Could you not have kept it displayed as 1-100 and just changed the way the game works internally to use the new calculations?)

Well, it is the beta so I imagine a lot of things will change, I'll be alright with seeing how this goes, heck, it may change back or change to something else eventually...

But it sounds like there are two conflicting view points that... don't -really- need to be all that conflicting.

Those that prefer a large value, as it encourages greater differences between planets.
+ Greater perceived variety when exploring the star map.
+ "Threat" value suggests the ship has intelligent systems capable of determining a planet's threat, adding depth to the sci-fi elements.
+ "Threat" can suggest more than just monster strength, it can relate to environmental hazards, planet size, hostile populations, detected technology, etc.
+ Suggests that each planet is vastly different.

    - If the threat system were to work, other systems need to be fixed.
    - can be confusing or frustrating if it seems the only differences between planets are monsters that one-shot you, or monsters you one-shot
    - while the planet variety may be different, the loot is static for the threat you face. There needs to be a clear reward for the risk

And then there are those that prefers the smaller value, as it simplifies things and supposedly fixes issues with weapon pen, equipment, etc.
+ Allows better/easier balancing for combat
+ cuts out the current issue of one-shot limbo
+ Makes choosing a planet less difficult
    - could lower perceived variety and "vast" feeling
    - eliminates the idea of a threat sensor on your ship
    - could suggest a linear gameplay pattern that discourages exploration

I'm open to either, either could work, as long as the mechanics are ironed out properly.

    Though, thinking about it...

    Can't we have two values?
Have the "threat sensors" of the ship gauge overall planet threat for one value, and.. I unno, "Biological life-form strength" from 1-10.
It would essentially be the same mechanic fixes as currently planned, but keeping variety too, best of both worlds?
The levels would still be the same, but it would still keep the variety...
