because exploring is fun? If you dont have the inner drive to explore without loot to carrot you, then be fine with the starter planet then. Give yaself motivation for once ;p

Haven't read the thread, but kinda want to voice my opinion. I actually really like the current setup. Having each planet labeled with an actual number gave a sense of progression as I upgraded equipment and found myself able to handle harder worlds. Moving to a 'easy, medium, hard' system would completely ruin that, since variations between two planets in the same category would be either invisible or not exist. At the same time, it doesn't convey the idea of a level or equipment curve and may result in players thinking 'hard? I'm good at platformers, I can totally play hard mode', possibly resulting in frustration because what is labeled as a difficulty is really referring to damage output and heath stats that most games organize by levels. Additionally, since sector 1 hard planets are equal to sector 2 easy planets, the term is variable and doesn't hold well, and could especially be confusing if you manage to beat the first boss under-equiped and simply figure that copper is fine for easy planets. Since the current system uses 1-10 for sector 1 and 11-20 for sector 2, its immediately easy to understand that a sector 2 starting planet is still harder than any sector 1 planet.

As for the damage re-balancing, I believe the only real issue with the current system is lack of explanation and non-standard terminology. While 'armor penetration' isn't incorrect, its usually a buff rather than a base stat, and is what I assumed it was. If all the next patch did was change the term to 'Weapon level', the entire system would probably be suddenly clear to a lot of people having issues. Instead, I'd like to just see more explanation on it. Something simple, like a tooltip, codex entry, or even quest completion screen that says "Higher level enemies have harder armor that negates more damage. Weapons with higher Armor Piercing can break through and carry it's base damage further. A Weapon with a Pierce level equal to the enemy's level will do the full base damage, and nothing more." Simple and clean.

On an unrelated note, I would love to see some way to buff up certain weapons at least some. It kinda sucks getting a cool weapon (like the flesh sword that shoots explosions) and get so used to it's effects, only for it to become useless quickly. Limited buffing would make sense, since this game is built on variety, but maybe a method of combining the weapon with a few craftable swords of similar design to boost it up a tier or two at most would be nice.

Because it's been like a friend, stable, and reliable. I'm not some elitist prick who goes around laughing at other people's misfortune as well while trying to feel proud of making XP users feel like shit. I love my XP. I'll upgrade to Win 7 when the time comes, now still doesn't seem to be the time. Also, people aren't rich to update on a whim so any funds to help upgrade would be highly welcomed and appreciated.

I'd love to play Starbound on my XP and I'd love to see an official fix soon. I'm of course being patient by doing other things while seeing how hard the dev team is working. It however gets tougher waiting as days pass. Also sucks that all of us XP users have to wait while these "elitists" try and feed off of our misfortune assuming that they are all cute and intelligent. I'd actually like to find bugs and report them.

since you can't access your universe without clicking on that character. I'd say, yes. Also during the beta we should probably be making new characters after each update. so can't wait for them to come out with the option to delete characters.

I hope this update fixes the issue where people can't even launch the game. I'm not talking about XP users, though they certainly need a patch too. I'm running Windows 7 on a computer that was able to launch and play the game once on Wednesday, but hasn't been able to open it since. I hit the Launch Starbound button and nothing happens. I have tried a few work-arounds and even reinstalling the game.

I only mention this here because I want to be sure the issue is heard in any way I can. It doesn't seem to be a very common issue if only a dozen threads have been made for it, few of them with more than a couple replies/suggested fixes. I don't know if an XP patch would help on a Windows 7 OS.

    Ugh, I'm super disappointed. ):

The reason support for it is being dropped, is that the operating system is good enough and mature enough that people don't see the reason to change to another. Windows 7 is pretty good, but it isn't the complete rewrite of the codebase it should have been. Microsoft hasn't stopped support yet, they are planning to stop support. They have planned to stop support a few times before, and they still go at it. Too much is riding on the operating system aside gamers. There is also infrastructure, educational facilities that require special software and upgrading is prohibitively expensive. Things like that.

At mentioned above some where, more than 1 in 20 players use XP, and that is a huge number of the player base.

Hardly elitist, and this isn't much of an excuse anymore (the money thing anyway). People have had well over 2 years to upgrade to Windows 7, and before that to Vista which was relatively stable after the first service pack. (Mind you, most Vista issues were caused by people running abysmally old hardware with incompatible drivers for the adjusted kernel and new interface) While I agree XP is the most stable system thus far, it's simply dated. It does not support the latest technologies and advances you would like to have in a gaming rig. Hell, the majority of my hardware doesn't even have Windows XP drivers anymore. It's been a good run, but technology has gone beyond that system. So it's not too much to expect people to upgrade from the old beastie to a more modern system. I mean, you haven't tried running WiiU games on a Gamecube either have you?

Now I understand, this game (supposedly) supports Windows XP. So I can understand the annoyance when it doesn't run. And I'm not demanding you upgrade, or parading my system is better. (I run a Mac myself, honestly) but I am however saying that it's simply time to let that operating system slip away and grab a new one to get the most out of recent games and hardware.

It also has an outdated kernel and doesn't support 64-Bit properly without hacky patches, nor does it have support for modern changes to filesystems and various new hardware technologies. It's not just because they want people to drop it, it's simply old and outdated. Without going through some weird hoops to hack stuff into it (and thus slowing it down or making it more unstable) it's not possible to implement new technologies.

Not to mention, it's just too freaking expensive for a company to still support a 14 year old system when they have three more recent ones going.

I think you miss understood how difficulties work. Every planet with a sector is the same difficulty. On the surface will be easy monsters. Then the deeper you go into the planet the harder it gets.

I like the current system. It gives me a lot of choice as to how challenging I want my experience to be. Rather than revamping it altogether I'd change three things:
    1. Scaling of damage in regards to armor vs armor penetration difference
Going from a level 1 bow to a level 5 bow was going from 'WHY... WONT... YOU.... DIE?!' to 'HAHAHA, ONE-SHOT!'. This is ridiculous. How about a level 5 bow deal the exact damage to levels 1-9 (level 10 bow would work as advertised on levels 6-14), and only then scale up/down.
    2. Armor ratings
Apparently the armor ratings displayed are for set, not item (currently to have 13 armor I need to eqip 3 items with rating 13) - they should be displayed per item. I think this is currently the most baffling mechanic.
    3. Ballance
Base leather armor having better stats (armor 13) than copper+iron armor (armor 5), and only slightly worse than gold+steel (armor 15) ... seriously?

But then again... beta. Might as well try out different things.

Entitled? What? I'm not demanding anything. I don't know where you got that from in my post. Did you even read the whole thing? As far as I'm concerned, the one not behaving like an adult is you, because you are apparently jumping to conclusions that are obviously false. Stop labeling everyone who asks for a refund as an immature child trying to prove a point and open your eyes yourself, you hypocrite.

How is reassuring Tiy that we won't flip out if XP doesn't work demanding?

And when did I demand that he give us updates in a timely manner? Where are you getting all these accusations from? Making them up in your ignorant mind, I see. But then again, the fool sees whatever he wants to see.

Currently, a level 8 planet has harder surface enemies than a level 2. The planned change organizes all planets into three groups. Whether the 10-step difficulty will still exist behind the scenes and so two medium planets could have slightly different difficulties, or is simply being thrown out in favor of three actual difficulties, I do now know.

Every single planet in a sector having the same difficulty sounds incredibly stale.
