Very much this. People, in general, feel better about themselves if they feel that they are progressing or growing in some sense. Having that static value and a much smaller sector variance will take away from that enjoyment.

I really don't like that we're losing 90 levels. I like the 100 level system a lot. It makes it seem way more dangerous to venture out and way more diverse of a universe.

Very excited for this update! I think it will be much better than it is now.

On a side note, a way to have multiple "home words" would be very useful!

Love this game, THANK YOU DEVS!!

You can play right now, but in my opinion you should just wait for this next update.

Well, can't wait to test this new balance system!
Thank you for your effort guys!

I have only one little request, if it's possibile:
actually, finding throwing object (and object in general) it's too much a matter of luck, even for the commons one.
Maybe raise the loot chances for basic object like Javelin, throwing dagger etc? (Not speaking about much rarer and important things like bomb or molotov).

Don't know if this was intended, but I only found 8 Javelin in 20 hour of gameplay :p

If I'm reading this right, then everything in Alpha Sector is just going to be rolled into Level 1. That makes me a little sad. I like having to kind of jump tiers between systems.

On the other hand, I do understand it. After a little bit of crafting and mining, I was pretty much able to kill everything on higher level planets after finishing a lv 5 planet.

On the other hand, the boom or bust of the first lv 11 planet I went on, where lv 14 creatures were taking out half of my health bar when I had lv 13 armor changed the dynamic of the game quite a bit...and not necessarily in a good way. This is something you are looking to fix via the change, which is good.

I'll have to play it and see it to know more. Otherwise, sounds good.

XP user here, so if I am spouting nonsense or what I am describing is how the system is currently go ahead and ignore it since I have not been able to play

How does the system work right now? wouldn't subtracting the difference between penetration and armor values from the weapon damage work? (to a minimum of 1 of course)
Actual Damage Dealt by a weapon = (Damage value of the weapon - (Armor value of the target - Penetration Value of the Weapon))

For example, take a monster with an armor value of 50
Weapon 1 has penetration value 50 and damage value of 10 so it will do 10 damage
    Weapon 2 has penetration value 47 and damage value of 10 so it will do 7 damage (50 - 47 = 3), so 10 - 3 = 7 damage

For balance purposes, could limit a weapon to doing a maximum of its damage value, or let penetration add to damage against weaker enemies so a later tier weapon will wreck low level things.
    Such as:
    Weapon 3 has a penetration value of 60 and a damage value of 10 so it will do 20 damage (50 - 60 = -10), so 10 - (-10) = 20

This seems pretty fair and intuitive to me, and ensures monsters only a few levels higher than your equipment don't completely destroy you, just do a bit more damage

Hearing a pretty fair amount of "Don't disrupt the 100 planet levels!" along this thread :) If we can find reasonable ways to merge the original hundred levels with the devs new ideas then they'll probably keep em, since they're pure awesome :>

Sounds like it will be a great update. Although I personally didn't mind the AP system, it will be very nice to simplify the comparison process. Considering that it will be easier to manage balancing, and easier to implement additional effects to gear, it sounds like it makes great sense from player and dev perspective.

I've been emotionally preparing for character wipes since I started haha so wipe away! :p

PS. Thank you all for what we have so far! IT IS AMAZING.

    1st: I don't know if i like the 1-10 tier system. I liked the variety in 1-100.
2nd: Someone mentioned not wanting to know easy/average/hard. I completely agree, I don't want everything spelled out. I want to actually go onto a planet and have variety in what i expect.
3rd: I'm curious if there will eventually be varying degrees of gravity per planet/moon
4th: It would be nice if planets/moons moved across the sky (perhaps even the sun)

and shows buttons that say "Join the Starbound Community." and "OFficial Wiki" etc and game doesn't start. D:

What do I do? Is there something i'm missing cuz i just bought the game and i'm a confused little idiot.

I understand if you guys wanted to make it a bit more linear (even though that in my opinion is the complete opposite of what starbound is capable/and or should be),
but why have 10 (planet levels)? Why not just keep enemy levels that just determine the overall strength of that particular enemy (Size, Damage dealt, HP max, Armor Shields, moveset patterns etc,)
And while you are at it, just make everything in the game just scale infinitely upward, so enemies are always different, tough/easy, and better loot is always a possibility. This will also add to the sense of
adventure, expansion, and mystery. It will also just increase the longevity of the game ten-fold. Why have max levels, scripted bosses, and a limited enemy supply when the game is almost completely
based off of random generation? Theres a lot of potential in starbound, we shouldn't squander it.

This is the reason in my opinion that XP support should be dropped soon after the full version is out. Badly needed gameplay fixes need to be delayed to support an OS that is over a decade old and is going to even lose security updates early next year... Does that not sound absurd?

XP is a potential drain on development resources in my opinion. And as such it was a mistake to say XP was to be supported in the first place in my opinion.
