    Therefore, friendship is science!

I think the whole, sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic, argument isn't the problem, its just the use of the word magic.

If you want technology to have effects like magic, fine, but's it's still science and saying it's "like magic" is a bit of a cop out when you could have said, augments brain waves to cause damage at a desired point.

If they added a ring that allowed you to shoot fire balls, most would be fine as long as it was technology. But the moment the words magic pop up, that's when people start getting vocal.

It's a valid point, but in this case it's technology we want to understand and already know is technology. No one has a problem with magical like effects as long as it remains technology

Avian and Floran Psionic tools would probably look magical and ritualistic anyways.

If you want to see "magic" on a scifi game go look at how Neocron worked.

Hey, I just had an idea.
Lifestealing tech/weapon effect could be awesome.

Psy-powers seem too close to fantasy to me. I think controlling clouds of nanomachines would be more sci-fi.

Or they could just make it a new class of gun instead. Charge up, then fire a self-detonating projectile or high-intensity beam.

Wait, are they even taking suggestions from general discussion, this was a question made in a completely different forum.

If they are, I hope they make later monsters attack more frequently and keep taking the offensive. Is Tiy also considering changes that will fix the "surround then with dirt and poke them" trick that you can use on everyone? I think that's very important to keep fights fresh for the player.

On the graphics side, will we be getting new animations with our moves? I do want to live the dream of being my favorite sci fi wuxia flick.

Hopefully they will fix the placing dirt to avoid fighting the mobs thats kinda gamebreaking... maybe some mobs could be turned into "burrowing" enemies... Like worms they eat through blocks (without destroying them) and passes by them. Then when they are in the reach of you they either spit acid or something else turn arround go again underground. Then they go up again and repeat... Or they could just go for biting people... that could stop a bit of the "let me build a dirt barrier to stop mobs"

And giant wormlike creatures are creepy but cool (imo)

Given the dropped hints about Kluex in the high tech hideouts, the story seems to be going this route.

Feh. So many people complaining about the magical/psychic stuff, I understand: the theme.

Okay, we can still have staves, but we should also have Psy-Gauntlets. Special gloves that allow special control and manipulation of energy and mind combined into a special form of energy.

Now, as I said, some races would be fine with a staff. Especially Glitch and Floran players would be in favor of magic staves!

It doesn't seem bad to have both gauntlets and staves.

    Ew, please no!

As I already said to someone else, I personally really enjoy the castlevania-like "time your attack right but beware, you only have two directions to go" thing, but taste apart I think this dumbs down fighting a little along with some of the changes mentioned in monsters AI.

If before you could trade the ability to cover your head a bit with the swing of your sword for the sheer damage of a poking spear, for instance, now that tradeoff is going to be way less noticeable; eventual DPS balance aside, it just makes the two kinds of weapon less different.

I could maybe endorse every weapon having one alternative move, and that of spears being an upward strike that either deals less damage or is way slower, but even then I'm pretty skeptical: it's Starbound, you are eventually going to have the right gear to fly at the side of any flying thing and poke it for massive damage. In fact, I'd say that makes spears a weapon that starts out as difficult (not impossible) to use and with your advancement becomes more viable, I think it's fine as it is (not to mention the existence of guns for your aiming needs).

Then of course, if the whole game is going to reshape itself since everything so far is placeholder-y, I'm not sure all of this applies, but as for now I'm adamant about wanting to keep weapons bi-directional and I'll even mod that in if required.

Now this? This I would LOVE. I already love games like Monster Hunter and adding something like this with the ability to "fuse" them with armor / weapons to get special properties would be fantastic.

magic = science we don't understand
stuff on starbound = we understand
    stuff on starbound = science

it's simple! we can have fireballs, summons and "magic" stuff, but we don't call it magic :V

How those (to be added) psychic powers provide quite a good chunk of discussion... and wow even in a good manner... slowly my faith in humans (atleast on here) is restored...

    Anyways on topic:

Psychic powers neednt to be something like "magic" which would be something like summoning stuff out of thin air/other realms without further explanation... For instance lets say:

"The extremly superior CEO of Omegacorp created a fireball with his bare hands to burn away the Agarans which use swords while posing as threat." (again I hope the agarans get their own weaponary, including ranged weapons at some point so I can take them more serious). That would be magic, its not explained how this works, nor even attempted to and would fit into a fantasy franchise.

Starbound is however more sci-fi so we need an explanation:

"The extremly superior CEO of Omegacorp had an organic augmentaion on his chest which resembles a dark blue spike. The spike releases chemicals into his body increasing the mental capacity by far, he obtained it from a certain creature from a certain planet which posses the power to levitate matter and manipulate it to a certain degree with its own mind. The spike on its chest is the organ for this ability. He told his people to decypher it and later on integrated it to his own body. This seems to allow him to manipulate his envirement only by using his mind for the price of slower wound heal. He uses this power to create a zone with extremly high gravity, but only affecting entities and objects he wants to be affected by it. The Agarans got torn into this area and got compressed to a sphere of biomass effectivly killing them."

See the difference? Case 1 is not explained how he creates a fireball and he is just able to. Case 2 tries to explain (even if its not scientific correct... but hey we are not in our own universe in Starbound... its an alternate one with alternate laws of physics maybe) how he is able to manipulate the envirement with his mind by saying that he implanted himself an organ (the blue spike on his chest) from another creature to take over the abilities and allowing to have these psychic powers.

The reason it works in castlevania is because the majority of weapons have at least the reach of the two handed sword in Starbound. That and mob ai in 2d castlevania games is utter trash. (By this I mean they are far more pattern based and predictable)

I hope they make the moves look more interesting than the spear "poke", along with more weapons, but that's me.

In other words, the key difference is you can't say "A wizard did it", but need a explanation.

In a sense. Not everyone needs to be able to explain it (for example: a USCM grunt seeing a Tesla Staff may say, "yeah, that thing works by FM"), but it should be explainable.

Summons are not ok. This is different.

Anyway,I'm tired of it. Some people just can't see the difference. Kay, have it your way. =/

P.S. fucking skeleton dragon boss makes me mad. This is example of "magic" in Starbound. He can't even fly, because his wings are made of whole bones. Fuck physics. Fuck ya all the hell, you stupid magic creatures in sci-fi genre.
