Not sure if this suggestion has been made before, but what about having the ability to choose the colour of wire, etc so that you can have wire that do not affect wire that is of a different colour?

    what would the wire do?

if there will be wire in starbound i would love to see different coloured wires wich dont connect to each other. would make wiring simpler (if there will be any in starbound ofc)

I don't know. I'm making the suggestion that if there is a wiring system in Starbound, that we use different coloured wires to prevent clashing, not what the wire itself would do.

ya defiantly i always have that intersecting wire problem in minecraft. and perhaps you can cluster different wires one top of each other and you can make the wires branch off at different places. also i think wires should be physical things and lot like they were in terraria just for realistic purposes and funny pvp purposes.

Could the wire seperate different circuits so you can have to circuits next to each other without merging.
It was annoying in Terraria having to have each circuit 2 spaces apart and made some things imposible to do.
    One colour:

    two colours:
    ━━━━━━
    ━━━━━━
If they actually do have wiring, they should definitely have this to seperate circuits.

Yes, this was exactly my idea. However, it also included the ability to place two different colours of wire on the same square, and remove them individually.

i hope there is wire system in starbound so we can make cool devices.
i would like to make some interesting devices

Oh yes, this idea gets my vote as well if this system is used to power things rather then another kind of system.

Wonderful idea. I think 4 colours (red, blue, green, yellow) are enough.

If something like redstone or wire were to be present in Starbound, I think that having multiple colors would be a splendid idea. It would make more complicated constructions simpler while also providing more advanced users with even greater possibilities.

I believe 4 colors would prove to be sufficient considering that you would be able to layer them such that you could have more than 4 lines that do not interact. It could be useful to have 5th "wire" that acts as all four colors but has all 4 wires have separate inputs and outputs. For example:

    ____I_\--------------------------------------------------- /_O____
    ____I_\--------------------------------------------------- /_O____
    -------==============================
    ____I_\--------------------------------------------------- /_O____
    ____I_\--------------------------------------------------- /_O____

I am not suggesting these specific colors; I just wanted colors that were easily recognized as different.

The image is quite crude, but I hope it is at least decipherable. I think a function like this would be very useful in reducing clutter and running multiple wires over longer distances.

Edit: Please ignore the gray dashes. They are only there for formatting purposes.

What would also be great, for us lazy people anyway, is to have a wire connector. The wire connector, when placed, would ask which 2 or more colours of wires would you like connected together. Just in case, while working on this contraption, you realize that you need to connect the two. So, instead of destroying a hundred little wires, you can just use the wire connector. Or a wire soldering kit. Or whatever.

Maybe the wires could automaticaly change to the colour that i'ts connected to.

What about a switch to change between different circuits?

The green wire goes to a switch (or preasure plate) that the player can interact with.

There was a minecraft mod which did this for redstone that looked quite nice. It's a doable idea, for sure.

Having multiple machines in proximity to each other becomes impossible without multiple wiring solutions. If a wiring system is included, it most certainly must contain more than one type of wire. I would suggest 4 in Red, Blue, Green and Gold varieties. In this way, multiple wires can run parallel to each other in the same tile or cross without interfering with one another. This gets my vote.

As for implementation, I don't think having four different tools (Terraria uses wrenches / cutters, for example) will work. Not only from an inventory standpoint, but it's also just kind of clunky. Rather, I could see a "basic" wiring tool that interacts with one specific color (sort of the 'intro' tool), and then another Multi-tool that allows you to switch between the different wire types. Something like tab, page up/down, whatever. I'd also like to see alt / Ctrl being used to remove wires instead of needing a separate cutter tool.

I also support the idea of having junction boxes that you can feed multiple wires into to condense them down to a single wire. For example, run 4 lights and a door to a junction box, then run just one wire off the box to the switch.
