1 because we don't HAVE to collect every colour of a certain block, and definitely don't need to keep them ALL in our inventory~

George, it's ok, pick whichever option you think suits best, I'll trust your dev knowledge...
But after release, please consider working on a submenu for colored blocks! X3
I'd make you a neat avatar if that happens

I agree. As much as I'd like to have access to a huge colour palette, the inventory would end up being ridiculous. Really, of the options, it almost certainly can't be 1. It would be just too hard to organize and stuff.

Who wants to explore the cosmos when you can sort inventory items for days on end? Option 1 for OCD!

I don't understand why inventory is such a problem, since when do people actually hoard dirt in these games? And for wood, stone and bricks, having all the options would be awesome. It'd justnbe weird to have blocks be changing color because of the planet you re on

Me. I have a weird thing where I don't like to lose blocks. Like in Terraria, I always put dirt and stuff away in a chest. I guess it stems from the fact that, no matter how much of it there is, it is finite. It's weird, I know. I still do it though.

Ah but in starbound, it IS infinite ;) how bout this devs: A building block exclusive storage unit called something like a "matter condenser" that can hold waaazaaaaaaaaay more stuff than a regular chest or crate

I think the issue is that, according to GeorgeV, there will be like, "a bajillion" different colored blocks. That means that if you go hoarding them up you'll spend way to much effort organizing them. If it were like 10 different colors, I'd totally be with you, but if there are 50 different shades of green-ish blocks that are seperated in my inventory, I'm gonna wish they would just clump together.

Yeah, I guess. Both points have their merits. But it's a behavior deep set in my mind. Like if you've ever played Skyblock, every single block of dirt is precious. I don't know what I'll end up doing now. I guess I'll try and store it all, and see how it goes.

Bartwe! You're the man. Come one guys! Just make it a player-set Game Option so we can choose which method we prefer when we begin our adventure. That wouldn't be difficult to implement since both mechanics are already possible in-game!

Ironically, George, yes. I actually DO want to have to manage all the materials I gathered from each planet I visit. Some I will take with me, others I will discard before leaving the planet. But I can't imagine Starbound with all it's Quadrillion planets delegating each material to a single Generic Auto-Matching variety.

But then what happens in multiplayer and you share resources with someone? They pick up your red dirt and all of the sudden it stacks with all the generic dirt they have. Now you lost your red dirt.

I'd say a combination of them. More like some "dirts" might be red because thats what color they appear because of the sun, others might appear red because of the minerals in it.. So i would say Most gets grouped together into one default stack, but others might be "special" dirt that retains its color.

Forget options 1 and 3, this officially gets my vote.

The community is split in two right now, and this represents a good middle ground. People who want a manageable inventory and people who want greater building options both get what they want, and at no cost to the other.

Why not just use 1 for the first week of beta, then take another vote to see if people think its too much to handle?

Another option #4 that may be slightly easier than my earlier option (color blending by proportion):

    - Colored blocks retain their color (option 1 above)
    - If you choose to combine stacks together, they take the color of whichever stack was larger (or possibly the stack it was dropped into; the latter might make more sense, but not sure if you want to allow using 1 pink dirt block to turn 999 blocks pink.)

This allows you to keep separate colors when you want them, but you can merge them together when you don't care about the colors. This way if you want to collect pink dirt for a special project, you can, but you can also just keep a supply of generic dirt of whatever shade you happen to prefer, by constantly folding the stacks into your favorite color. This still has the slight weirdness of dirt changing color when you clump it together, but it's not really any more weird than having 1,000 square feet of dirt fit into a tiny portion of your backpack.

No, I fully expect to have to dump inventory 4-5 times a planet, if not more. I'm fine with that. I expect to do this every single planet I land on, I plan to have little more then boxes EVERYWHERE I'm also fine with this, in a game where there are millions of weapons to collect, millions of blocks, tons of tech items etc. I expect to always have a full inventory. I look forward to the challenge of inventory managment, especially if it means the same thing as below.

Yes, all my yes, every bit of my yes. Can I yes it more then yes? o_O
