    are apex actually 'socialist'?

Seems to be. It's a controlled society with everyone working for the greater good.

They're Distopian and Police State, not so much 'Socialist' as much as under absolute militaristic control.

I feel that that may be where they ended up but that they are Socialist in original intent and current justification. I don't think the population underwent the evo-devo process under duress. I think it was considered to be for the greater good.

These are my thoughts from what was already mentioned.

    • Humans - Crowd, Mass, or Community - Don't forget that humans no a peaceful race, working together.
    • Apexes - Collective - since they are a militant race
    • Florans - Bed or Garden would make sense, as would Grove
    • Avians - Flock, Nest, or Parliament, though I feel they don't work as well, remember they are an Aztecian like race
    • Hylotlians - Dynasty and Harem sounds nice, and Tachi just sounds cool.
    • Novakid - Cluster though I feel it to be weak. Galaxy is ok, but I think Posse works better.
    • Glitch - Court, Parley, or even Banner. I feel Glitches may not be unaware of what they are...not too sure on that though...another idea could be Clan

Things makes me wonder if the names here are the names the races call themselves or if they are the names given them by humans.
Will have to make a thread about that ;']
I will have to look the Aztec aspect of Avian society.

Oh, since we are doing medieval collective nouns for Glitch, we can try these for ones closely related to soldiers:

    Legion
    Squad
    Council
    Order

I'm ordering my suggestions by (family group), (unaffiliated group), (loosely-aligned group), (rigidly-aligned group w/hierarchy)

Human - Family, Crowd, Gang, Workforce
Reasoning: This is what I call each kind of human group, unless it has a specific name.

Apex - Family, Mob, Troop, Regiment
Reasoning: Apex are very similar to humans, and were probably almost indistinguishable from us before the VEP - thus their basic family life is probably very similar to humans. Due to their strict, highly-militarized society, I imagine they'd be slightly derogatory towards large public congregations of unaffiliated or loosely-affiliated Apex, due to the potential for such groups to start riots. They would, however, be quite supportive of tightly-organized and well-structured groups, especially those under direct governmental authority.

Avian - Mating-Pair, Flock, Wing, Flight
Reasoning: Was inspired by birds here, but due to the sheer variety of Avian appearances, I wanted to avoid terms that referenced a specific kind of bird, and stick with generic bird group terms. My imagination thought of paired lovebirds, placid flocks of flamingos wading, cooperative raptorial birds, and a formation of geese, respectively.

Hylotl - Kazoku, Knot, Tachi, Shiver
Reasoning: Went with a mix of Japanese terms and terms for amphibians/fish. Not entirely happy with this set, might change it. Kazoku and Tachi are Japanese terms, referring to a family or a group/gang respectively. Knot is what you call a group of frogs, a Shiver is a group of sharks.

Floran - Bouquet, Tangle, Thicket, Hedge
Reasoning: Inspired by plant terminology. A bouquet is just a few flowers tightly bundled together. A tangle of vines can cover numerous individual plants, haphazardly wrapped around one another and their surroundings. A thicket of trees presents a unified group, but they aren't very ordered. A well-trimmed hedge is quite possibly the most orderly group of plants imaginable. Considered "bonsai" for the last one, but most bonsai plants are solitary, while hedges can, and often are, planted in rows or mazes.

Glitch - Coprocess, Network, Court, Knighthood
Reasoning: Mix of computer and feudal/monarchical rank terminology here. Using 'coprocess' for a family group I thought was clever, because it would make the individual members "coprocessors." A network is a group of linked computers, but with the existence of the Internet, those computers don't really need to be aligned under a specific purpose or hierarchy. A king's court is a social gathering of the king's feudal nobility, led naturally by the king. A knighthood (more correctly a knightly order, but 'knighthood' rolls off the tongue better) is a tightly-organized group of knights, their squires, and soldiery.

Novakid - Binary, Cluster, Posse, Brigade
Reasoning: Novakids are plasma-based life-forms. Essentially, humanoid stars. A Binary is a pair of stars that closely revolve around one another and may even trade stellar material between them. A cluster is a loose group of galaxies sharing a similar space. For more closely-affiliated groups, I turned to Old-West terminology. A 'posse' was a common term for a group of cowboys, particularly a group of lawmen out hunting a criminal. A Brigade is a military term, but comes from the same root word as "Brigand" and was often used to refer to organized civilian services, such as a "Bucket Brigade" to refer to firefighters, prior to the invention of fire hoses and fire hydrants.

This is just awesome. Thank you.
I especially liked you terms and reasoning for the Hyltol and Florans.
My only problems would be with the rigid group terms for Glitch and Novakid. For the Glitch, Knighthood is an award and title conferred on someone so in lieu of something better I would personally go with "banner". For the Novakid I guess my problem is not so much with the term but with imagining such a large group organised in such a way. Even then I probably might not go with brigade. Perhaps "deputation" though that sounds like a small group still, maybe swap posse and deputation.

For me the Glitch don't seem that martial, compared to most of the races I think they are firmly on the peaceful side of the fence, it's just that not a lot of old time medieval non-martial terms are still used and recognizable as originating from then. And while "order" would otherwise be the best of the bunch I can't say "The Florans absolutely destroyed an order of Glitch the other day" with a straight face ;']

Quite welcome... considering I posted that at 1:20 AM, I'm surprised that I sounded coherent, let alone conveyed a worthwhile idea.

To be honest, I actually considered "Deputation" or some variation of it for the Novakids, but then I tried actually using it in a sentence. It's awkward. Besides, "Brigade," when used informally, doesn't necessarily have to refer to the military standard of ~1,200 soldiers. Firefighter brigades, for instance, exist, and some can number less than a dozen individuals, especially in a small town. Further, brigades of soldiers stationed in forts were an important part of the Wild West, as many frontier towns grew up either around water (for sustenance), around mines (for wealth), or around army forts (for safety).

"Banner" for an organized group of Glitch is definitely good, and something I definitely didn't consider. It rolls off the tongue well, is associated with a group (military units would carry a banner to identify themselves to their commander and enemies), and conveys the idea that this group is organized (banners and standards, after all were an important part of battlefield communication in medieval times).

The Glitch seem based on medieval feudal/early monarchical systems. Even if they are peaceful now, they no doubt come from (or have been engineered with programming based on) a warlike past, much like human medieval societies. Note how quite a few Glitch in pictures we've been provided seem to live in castles or fortified manors, and have a tendency to resemble armor, especially in their head-designs? I don't think the Glitch will entirely give up their military history. Remember, the ideas behind chivalry and knightly codes of conduct largely originated from knights during peacetime, when they were struggling to move from being warriors and generals on the battlefields to being civil servants of their feudal communities.

You've convinced me on the brigade part so you are coherent and your arguments cogent ;']

As to the peacefulness of the Glitch I still feel they are the most peaceful of the races except maybe the humans based off of the recent intro. Even if they were more warlike in the past* we have to compare them with Florans, eat everyone on sight, Apex, a very martial society, Avian, recently gone through a civil war, Novakid, while not martial mostly due to not organising themselves into armies they sure don't seem peaceful, and Hylotl, who we don't know much about but appear to have a similar feudal system if Eastern instead of Western and this "fall" we hear about. I also think you have to judge them on their present and if it's the equivalent of medieval times© then it's based on the most peaceful period in human history, with the chance of death by warfare at it's lowest ever. Even the formalization of warfare into chivalric codes and such is something that peace allows you to do. In war those go out the window and it's all about putting the pointy end in the other guy.
    * I'm not sure that they were. They are the Glitch, the mistakes that didn't kill themselves. It makes me feel that the anomalous part that allowed them to survive is their pacifistic tendency.

I think I may have swerved a bit from my point there, but it's 2:30am here and I'm not sure I have the ability to fix it right now ;']
