In a recent thread I got to thinking what the correct collective noun for a group of Florans would be. That got me thinking about the other races as well. So what do you think of these options and what are your suggestions? I'll add suggestions to the list.

    Humans- familiar
    • Group
    • Crowd
    • Congregation, Population/Populace, Assemblage, Droves, horde, huddle, mass, mob, nexus, society, Community - demanded by DJOkamical and Affero
    • Bunch of humans, Bigger bunch of humans, Many humans - suggested by Tleno
    Apex- Primate, martial, socialist, intelligent
    • Shrewdness - Sounds odd but it's from here under apes.
    • Troop/troupe - The one I am more familiar with, and seems to fit better with the Apex martial theme.
    • Tribe - Monkeys
    • Band - Gorillas
    • Whoop - Gorillas
    • Collective - suggested by Tleno
    • Party - suggested by comrade blind sniper.
Florans- Plantlike, tribal (disputed), carnivorous (disputed)
    • Copse - Like a bunch of trees.
    • Bed and Garden - a bit gardeny.
    • Stand/Grove/Thicket- Again like trees.
    • Bouquet - For the flowery types.
    • Orchard - for the more "cultivated" Floran.
    • Branch - with the individuals being the metaphorical leaves.
    Avians- Birdlike, tribal, religious
    • Flock - The one everyone knows for birds.
    • Flight or wing - Used more when hunting birds or about aircraft.
    • Nest - More like a term for a family or social unit.
    • There are so many more for birds by species such as: murder (crows), siege (bitterns, herons), wake (buzzards), clutch (chicken), brace (ducks, geese), charm (finches), stand (flamingos), gaggle (geese), covey (grouse), kettle (hawks), bevy (larks), pandemonium (parrots), kit (pigeons), parliament (owls) and dozens more.
    Hylotl- Amphibian, fishlike, aquatic, Asian
    • Knot or nest - From toads
    • Shoal or school- From fish
    • Fluther or smack - From jellyfish for fun
    • Army - From frogs
    • Congregation - From aligators
    • Dynasty - suggested by hirakhos.
    • Harem - by hirakhos and also the group noun for axalotl.
    • Seemingly empty room - of ninjas.
    • Tachi - Japanese postfix denoting a group.
    • Kazoku - Japanese word meaning family.
    • Shiver - group of sharks.
    Novakid- Stellar, wild western, distracted
    • Cluster - Like stars, it's a stretch.
    • Constellation - better I think.
    • Galaxy - for really large groups.
    • Nebula
    • Saunter - A group of cowboys.
    • Posse
    • Deputation
Glitch- Mechanical, robotic, medieval, anomalous (do they consider themselves this way?)
    • Cluster - from servers
    • Clatter/clank -from their shiney metal... feet.
    • Node/Subnet/Network - Most are from server and computing terms.
    • Array
    • Battery - For artillery, but has an older feel and it's punny.
    • Court or Parley - more medieval sounding.
    • Banner - group of knights.
    • Assemblage - ooh I like it. from here.
Avians and Apex I feel are the easiest. They are closest to things we have names for already.
Hylotl, while physically similar to newts and salamanders, seem to be considered more like fish people.
Florans are difficult since plant group names don't seem to fit since they seem more... sedentary. Ambulatory plants are rare after all.
Glitch too, we have few names for animated machines.
Novakid are the worst, we have nothing even remotely like them. Beyond "constellation" I have no good ideas.
A lot of the names listed here come from this wikipedia page. It's a fun read in general. I never new a bunch of boys together was a "blush", and cats a "glaring".

    Interesting perspective.

For Florans, you could use garden, orchid, or nursery. Those are some common things (while maybe sounding applicable) I think of when flowers and plants come to mind.

  3. Awesomized

    Awesomized Oxygen Tank

A group of owls is called a Parliament.

    Maybe a Parliament of Avian.

  4. hirakhos

    hirakhos Phantasmal Quasar

For Hylotl it should really be Dynasty, a Dynasty of Hylotl's.
Also a Group of Axolotls (Where they get their name and amphibious nature from) is called a Harem, because okay. (Due to the many, many fins a group has looking like the rich cloth you find in a Harem)

I thought of garden, was wondering if it was too "cultivated", but I'll add it. Orchid is more a type of plant than a name for a collective of plants. And a nursury I think more general for any race. What do you think of a "bouquet"?

    That's actually a good one!

EDIT: I meant orchard, it is far too late for me to be spelling correctly :p

    Interesting idea.
With the home worlds being destroyed thing I always imagined the intermingling of the races rather than a collective group. It would be cool to see that kind of thing in NPC survivors, pockets of surviving races as well as mixed colonies and stuff.
Might be cool to run in to remnants of the old social orders too, pockets of NPC soldiers/ nobles/ scientists/ politicians etc doing various things and offering missions or a new potential enemy.

A murder of crows avians? :p

Murder of crows and army of frogs... suddenly I started to like grammar.

Anyways, regarding glitch, thing server/network won't work, they seem not to be as interconnected as modern computers and each and every seems to interact in same way as human beeings.

  12. futrtrubl

    Grammar can be fun ;']
Yes, I'm personally leaning away from them myself. Also the reason I didn't put in borg-like references.

  13. Tleno

    Tleno Spaceman Spiff

Also, regarding apes, since they have socialist system, guess they can go with things like "collective" or "labour team".

  14. futrtrubl

    Good point. Added collective.

  15. Affero

Since the Glitches are glitches maybe their collective noun should be a synonym of problem
    like, a complication of glitches

  19. Cosmin Negoita

    I'd go with:
    1. group of humans
    2. collective of apex
    3. branch/copse of florans
    4. flock of avians
    5. knot of hylotl
    6. saunter of novakids
    7. array of glitch
Well, these would work in my opinion, but to be honest, I'll never bother to use any of those in the end, because just using "group" for every race is easier, and it isn't irrelevant.

Hai hai, wakatta yo. Updated the boring humans with your demands.

    Also added

I feel these are also appropriated and not biased at all so added.

Yeah, for a sentient species and, well, for any assemblage of things ever "group" is adequate. It just doesn't have a lot of flavour, "I clipped the wings of a group of Avians the other day," "A group of Glitch stepped on a EMP mine yesterday and popped their tops," "A group of hungry looking Florans are heading our way. Act natural."
Now say those again with the relevant collective nouns ;']
