Collecting lava?

Discussion in 'Starbound Discussion' started by UnrealAlly, Dec 18, 2013.

?

What way should we do this? If you want to at all.

  1. Buckets!

    20.3%
  2. Some kind of high tech device like a lava vacuum.

    61.0%
  3. Lava generator? Builds A pump that slowly adds lava to an area. Needs something to fuel.

    16.9%
  4. Don't add anything at all lava is good the way it is.

Not a lava vacuum but a liquid containment device. Also the poll is not to great no "other" option.

Not to mention water and poisonous water and purple water. What if you want purple water in your base on a planet without it? Is the water color coded based on the generation seed or is it stored with the water 'blocks' (or however they exist)? If they aren't then it will be impossible to do that sort of shipping since the water would automatically be your worlds type when brought there. Also, I have the survival backpack so I can breath without air. It think it would be interesting to add a pressure bar for how deep you can swim and have some ocean planets. I've made under ocean bases in minecraft, starbound shouldn't be limited in allowing that.

I would love some way to transport liquids, like lava and water etc....This would be a great idea!

Id also like to be able to store and transfer alot of different liquids at once for my water park world I intend to make

Is it just me who thinks that "lava vacuum" makes no sense whatsoever?

At that low pressure and the necessary temperature, quite a bit of the lava would turn into gas, destroying the vacuum-ness of the vacuum and cooling the lava. You get no vacuum and a hot rock.
Makes as much sense as a white phosphorous fireman's helmet. =)

No, you're not the only one. Buckets don't make sense either: I've got an impervium bucket that the lava can't melt. Yay, me! Now somehow I'm going to dip it into a pool of molten lava using naught but my hands, and then carry it with a handle that is a foot ABOVE the bucket of molten lava, all without turning my arm into an ashen stump. Hmmmmm o_O Better yet, I'm gonna be putting that open-topped bucket into my backpack and letting it jostle around with the thousands of tons of rock and dirt I'm already carrying :cautious::eek:

I think the most "realistic" idea I've heard so far is a machine that melts rock into lava, though realistic is obviously not always the goal in games. Equally fun would be a pumping system, and just try not to think about the poor pumping mechanism responsible for the job of actually sucking lava from one place to another :D

there was an iron bucket for just such this in Terraria

The idea was a Vacuum. This isn't high on the priority list though but I'm sure we'll address transporting liquids.

I like vacuums because you can just suck it all up in your inventory quickly and spew it out quickly with a single tool (and not needing tons of buckets if you want to do a lot).

The idea of just having a collecting tool instead of a transport system like buckets and pumps hadn't occurred to me, but I agree that it sounds like a much better idea.

Edit: also, weaponized lava spewing vacuums? Yes please.

That's really cool, but I also liked the idea of sprawling pipes carrying liquids (And possibly items) around. :V

While we are considering the physics of the capability of carrying lava, lets argue about what happens to the 16,000 blocks of cobblestone which I compressed into my cubic meter chest.

Well, hopefully, there's room for both.

There are some cool things you can do with plumbing (like water/lava/acid falls that pump from the basin to the top of the falls), but I certainly don't want to lay pipe whenever I want to get fluids at all.

Although I'm sure many of us fully agree that pumps would be a welcome addition to the game, it just isn't feasible for certain things.

While great for moving liquids between chambers, it wouldn't be so great to have to run a several-mile-long pipe just to collect the lava and bring it up to your base to start with. Especially so if you only need a small amount.

Vacuum sounds most plausible and simplest way to do it. I imagine you'd left click to suck and right click to blow, though one of the problems would probably is what if you'd suck different types of liquid. I Imagine that could be solved by having the liquid separated in your inventory just like how the terrain is separated, but like in a container so you can store it away or whatever, and you'd have to use the vacuum to place it in the environment and such.

I like the idea of a vacuum to carry around liquids (Though you might need more than one if you want to carry around the poison, tar, tentacle and lava liquids too.) But I also think there needs to be ways to manipulate standing water too. Pumps and pipes could allow for artificial waterfalls and fountains. You know, I think regular waterfalls and rivers should be things too. I don't know how you'd pull it off beyond having generated pumping systems, but a wall of water that is gushing too fast to swim up or across would make a heck of an obstacle to get past.

Just to be different from all the vacuums, buckets, and liquid transportation ideas, what if we made it into a type of solid transportation?

You build a doodad that fires a thingamajig into a pool of liquid and the thingamajig freezes the liquids in space time, allowing you to mine them up like they're solid blocks, carry them around in stacks, and when you place them back down, they unfreeze and go back to behaving like a liquid.

That's kinda what the gelatin capsules do in the liquid extractor mod.

I don't know much about mods other than the dye bucket mod, but that seems like a solid idea too.
