Chests that only open when the correct 5-10 digit code is entered. Benefits: -Multiplayer storage: Prevent theft from other players! Keep your stuff locked away! -Dungeon Exploration: Chests need codes to open? Explore the dungeon to get the code! Of course, for this to work, there would have to be some way to put the chest into the player's inventory without it opening... Plus there would have to be a way to program chests to open to a certain code.
I think this will be essential for dungeons to really be fully operable, since right now you could just dig your way to the end of one of those Apex zappytrap obstacle courses and grab the chest. Having dungeon blocks not be mineable until a task is completed is one option that did work quite well in Terraria, however it kinda doesn't make sense in logical terms.
The only way this would work is if there was a way to protect terrain. People can just break chests and get the loot. We need Towny for Starbound. I do very much like your idea, though.
The problem is that you're not going to be left alone while you're screwing with this chest. It's bad enough trying to get the items out of a normal one. I could see this working but only if chests by nature refused to open unless you defeated everything in the room or something.
