Coal: A not so abundant resource.

I haven't played in a few days but coal became a rarity in the gamma sector. The stuff is about as common as diamond save for that coal could at least only found near the surface. It really needs to be the most abundant resource due to how necessary it is to make torches, steel, and fuel.

Pretty much. My starter actually had trees but I used it for building. My main base is still on a level 1 planet. Makes it a lot easier to do stuff when you're invincible.

That souns more like an inability to ration torches and steel. Remember you have a metric crapton of planets at your disposal. Als oa quick tip for easy coal copper and iron is to use desert planets and fine sand.

At least acknowledge the problems of others, please. I'm not the only one who believes that coal needs to be easier to come by, as demonstrated by everyone below me.

Yes, it'd be easy to find coal on a desert planet, but in a system without such planets, after three runs on the same world, and only 12 coal and no Light Metal to show for it, I'm a bit concerned that it's harder to come by than you believe.

At least, for me it is.

Then run a different planet. I aknowledge you're having a problem, and I gave solutions. Run a different planet. I have never seen any planet as coal deprived as people are claimng.

I just want to say that in X sector

you encounter SO MUCH solarium SO MUCH plutonium SO MUCH uranium

you never have to use coal ever again as a resource

i wish they could maybe add some big nodes in the earlier sectors deep down into the planet

    would do 2 things:

    1. provide incentive to dig down
    2. mediate the lack of coal problem

You'd still find coal normally, but for those that really want to dig down, they can find cooler fuel too

I have literally 6 fuel in my ship, and my only nearest planet is a gas giant.

Just because you've been lucky with Coal doesn't mean others have been just as lucky. In fact, the vast majority agrees that something needs to be done about the amount of coal received.

What happens if your in a situation like I was, where you have only 1 planet in your system and insufficient coal.

While I agree that normally your solution is the way to go, there needs to be a system wide "minimum coal" amount for tier 1 planets to ensure that each system has enough coal should you start in that system.

No need to be such a giant twat.

Ever cross your mind he might not HAVE enough coal to go to a different planet? Jesus.

Also I agree with OP. Having barely scraped enough coal together to travel to beta sector, I barely have any left for steel, and the system I landed in seems completely bereft of coal, although I still have yet to explore 2 of the 5 planets. Even the desert planet. It seems after they rebalanced the ores, coal seems to have become extremely scarce. Before the reset I had so much coal I was leaving it in the ground because I almost had a full stack. Now I dig down even if I see just one.

Not to be insulting or rude, but I've been on hundreds of planets, and every single one of them has had atleast 100 coal and/or dozens of trees, can some of you who claim to be unable to scrape up 200 fuel please share some coordinates?

I have been on planets where coal was hard or impossible to find on the surface, but I have never found one in which exploring caves and doing some mining didn't reward me with plenty of coal to go to several different systems.

I always feel the same after beating the UFO. If you chop every tree on a planet however, that's guaranteed 150~250 coal after conversion.

On my main save at least, on the level 4 planets, I usually find 200~300 coal while searching for other ores.

I really do have to be such a twat. But I digress. I agree with the others run us the co-ordinates so we can do like proper and test this shit.

I highly doubt they will post coordinates. If they do though, I'll personally go to each and every one of them as I have more fuel than I could every hope to use.

Though like I said, I doubt they will as it would expose the fact that this coal shortage doesn't actually exist and they just aren't mining.

I started out on a planet with little coal, and like you I don't want to bring down all the trees in sight. I like exploring the planet's depths, and in doing so I collected loads of items. I find I have to toss away lots of blocks, or items I don't want to waste space on.

So it got me thinking: why not add in a space tech item called a Matter Converter, which converts/compresses blocks and unwanted items into a yet to be defined ammount of fuelcells for your space ship?

The option to use coal for fuel would still be there, but ythis way you could use your coal for precious crafting, up until the point you decide to explore beyond your solar system, or even your region.

With more coal at hand at the beginning, you could leave your trees alone :)

Is there a way to see what planet I started out? I still have the character, but he is FAAAR past that point now

Go into the universe folder within your Starbound directory, sort by date modified and look for the oldest Alpha planet. That is your starting planet. The first two sets of numbers in the file name are the coordinates.

Good lord you people are just sad, perhaps if you stopped insulting each other and generally being condescending than things would be better. and seriously i understand that it sucks to be stuck on a planet that doesn't IMMEDIATELY have resources available, i generally walk around the surface of the planet first to spot anything like coal and such. and i understand that the game is far from finished. a fact that some people tend to miss. and i am damn sure that the devs are working on these issues.

so all and all take your time as the devs know of your problems, so please calm down and give it a rest.

That is really bad. Have you beaten the penguin saucer yet? With the portable pixel printer, you can at least make cheap lights to help you explore underground.

I'm thinking that is probably your best bet of finding coal, possibly uranium and then be able to get to planet that the RNG hasn't been so harsh to. Good luck!

Edit: Sorry, missed the first line of your original post. I see you have beaten the penguin saucer. Sorry!

Tis easy to insult. But I would really really love the co-or'ds so I could delete my unverse folder and send a fresh whipersnapper of a character to them.

Wow, there's so much wrong with that assumption, I can't even...

Alright, remember how in my original post I said I saved the coordinates to this planet I liked? Well, this was before the update where all our characters were wiped. After the update, I returned to the planet to find that there were different ores in different locations. Iron and silver became more abundant, gold was on the surface, and very little coal was found. However, the terrain, creatures, and trees were consistent with what I remembered from before the update.

My point is, giving you guys the coordinates may just lead to nowhere, as the ores may vary from one player to the next. That said, I will give you the coordinates of my home planet.
