The "Main Quest," as you call it, is simply upgrading your equipment.

You can't allow players to go literally everywhere and do everything the moment they step into the game, because that's overwhelming. That's why there are so many people who OWN a copy of Skyrim, but so few people who have completed the game.

People play for three or four hours and then stop, never coming back to it, because they have thousands of choices with no real direction.

Haha what? I've discovered and crafted nearly every craftable item in the game. Fought every boss. Explored every biome. Every sector. Found temples, airships and cities.

My point is all of that means NOTHING in this game. All the exploring, got me nothing except, oooo pretty. There are no goodies and treasure to be found. No stoties to read. No quests. No interaction. They are there as a biproduct of my forced mining experience.

I've seen the whole of the game.

I have to agree with both of you. It is linear at the moment. I would hope there are alternatives to the main line to progress further with out doing the main line itself.

The problem, is the way they tier gated our crafting. There is no reason why I should have to defeat two arbitrary bosses to get a back light, or how ever many to get a drill.

But we have to slow people rushing on at 'end game' in my opinion if you have an 'end game' in a sandbox, something went badly amiss.

Oh really? So you have all the recipes for every theme of furntiure. You have every possible randomly generated combination of item you can find? Please continue bullshitting some more

    "Explored every biome. Every sector."

"No stories to read. No interaction."

"There are no goodies and treasure to be found."

These comments are mutually exclusive. If you've found nothing to read and no treasures, you plainly haven't explored.

And just what are you expecting when you say "Treasure," anyway? Every object in the game is just going to be another object. As soon as you find it, there will be dozens of others who find it.

Do you want something unique across the entire world? Go play MajorMUD, then, because you won't find anything like that anywhere else in the entire universe of gaming, and for fairly good reasons.

thats a very good point! and at least if that kinda system exists it really should be a little cheaper escpecially on the starter items

I'm pretty sure you're playing a different version of Starbound because a lot of these problems have been dealt with...
That or you just don't know how to play the game. Either one.

That's beta testing? MINING some more so I can afford to buy every useless weapon with 2 dps of stat difference? Finding furniture recipes for mushroom chests? OH or do you mean that pixxel printer that completely ruins the point of searching for recipes. It lets me copy items. After I MINE for pixels.

Bro u crazy. This game is linear and tedious.
I love the biomes. Love the cities. Love the temples. I just think they are useless. Because they are no part of the progression. And give me nothing but looks. I can't even unlovk fun stuff like creature capture without mining to the next tier.. srsly?

Get your head out of your "elitist beta tester" butt. And discuss progress for the game with me. You think cities should remain useless? You think mining for boss fights should be the staple of the game? Say so, and we can discuss compromises for a game that has a chance to be great.

Don't "ermahgerd test bugs dude don't test the game progression"

    I like alpha/beta threads that start with, "I know it's alpha/beta BUT..."

This game has already had the combat and level system completely revamped soon after it was available for purchase, so clearly the devs aren't afraid to make big changes if necessary, and clearly the game is a work in progress.

I personally find the game a little on the bland side right now - it's very repetitive and generic, the boss fights are kind of on the weak side, loot drops are generally meh, there's a lot of balance wonkiness. It's almost like it's an alpha game in development. Doh! I surely expect things to get refined and more spicy as development progresses.

One thing that is for sure as that the Starbound devs are working their tails off - the pace of patches, tweaks, and development seems to be rather furious.

Outside of that the OP describes elements of a variety of games that feature those elements (like survival, exploration, and building in this game or minecraft) and how much he hates those elements, leading one to possibly think, why do you play games you do not like? :)

I would play games, but I don't really have the time or desire to play games, so I just buy I don't like or have time for, sign up for forums, and complain about them instead.

I don't know how long you've been following Starbound, but if you read the daily/weeky updates prior to beta release it was revealed that there would be a hunger system, a temperature system, that Pixels would be vital to crafting, and countless other features a while back. You may find it useful to just read through the older updates.

You can always search Youtube for guides, walkthroughs, and such, like this "How To Get Pixels SUPER FAST!" video or this "Pixel Farming Guide."

And, despite the posts that you see that are offensive and/or unhelpful, there are multiple of us forum users who will gladly help you to the best of our ability and try to answer any of your questions, such as myself.

Starbound is trying to be different in a world where games like Minecraft and Terraria seem to be the basis for any games like them, mine this, kill this, easily move on without much effort or risk. In my opinion, it has been doing a good job of doing so. The game is not just about creating, or just about surviving, but a challenging mixture of both.

If you are having a lot of trouble with the game, you can look around for servers, groups, and communities to join to help you and have fun with.

From what I gathered from your post, it seems that you would appreciate the Director Mode that has been talked about before, which apparently will allow you to not only infinitely create items/blocks like the Creative Mode of Minecraft, but alter the world/server to serve your needs and create your own adventures. Though, this is a feature planned post-release, so not any time soon, unfortunately.

There is always the option to Mod the game to your liking. Tutorials are out there, like this one. The devs have a Modding Forum, and Mollygos was also kind enough to put together a hub of lists and tutorials.

And always keep in mind that this is Beta. Nothing is permanent, everything can (and most likely will) change. The game may become easier, will most likely become less linear, and generally improve and expand.

If you want a literal virtual sandbox, go play Garry's mod. No other game has ever claimed to desire such open structure and it's blindingly obvious that you have no idea what the premise of Starbound is.

Or what the word "sandbox" really means. They said they're making the game they'd love to play and that doesn't include rocketing off into whatever part of it you like at the very beginning.

I'd like to start this by saying, bad troll is bad. Also reporting this post because that's all I can see this as, a very poor attempt at trolling, seriously go back to whatever rock you crawled out from under man.

Nearly every, is not every. There are entire armor sets you have to find the blueprints for in minibiomes. I'd wager you don't have all of those, if any of them. If you do, by all means show us some screenies that'd be fun to see. You've fought every boss? Congrats there are what, 4 of them right now? The game is no where near complete. You haven't explored every biome, because some of the biomes implemented aren't reachable yet. Or do you mean every reachable biome? Awesome give me the co-ordinates to world trees, and a crystal biome please, I haven't found them yet.

The point of exploration for most people is to see a variety of things, new trees, new and interesting monsters etc, while you may not see it as such, that's just your very, very, very limited troll mind-scope. Not a fault of the game, though I'll grant you exploration certainly needs more incentive, I still have fun exploring and finding stuff, I just don't do it when I'm bug-testing cause it doesn't serve alot of bug-testing purpose right now. There are tons of goodies and treasure to be found. I'm sporting a Cyclops helmet right now, trying to find the rest of the Eye Armor recipes that are in, mostly cause it makes me look like some sort of cyclops badass demon of awesome. No stories? Really? Loot a bookshelf or thirty, there is lore coming out the wazoo in this game man. No quests? You're right on that one, I think that's the ONLY point you're right on so far in your post actually. Other then the tutorial quests there aren't any, why? Because it's a beta, they straight up said quests weren't going to be in, until closer to release, this way they can have balance, and progression down better before they give you storyline quests and procedural quests, this of course requires reading, and using the search function on the forums, both of which are things I'd imagine you avoid, since as I stated before you're a troll.

Yes there is mining in this game, yes you have to do it to progress. Yes you had to do that in Minecraft, and Terraria, you couldn't beat the wall of flesh (Without hacking) in Terraria with your starting gear. Legit, why? You'd run out of screen to fight him on. Minecraft you start...you have nothing! You have to mine to get anything, period, even if your first dirt blockt o build with. SO what you're really after here Cael, is a creative mode right? Otherwise I don't get the purpose of your ignorant anger and complete bullshit stories.

Not humanly possible, you'd die before you could visit every planet, and since each planet is different in some way, you have thus not seen the whole game. Seriously man, at least be a better troll if you're going to troll.

A big part of this game is also building, right now it serves little purpose from a purely gameplay standpoint. However much like in TErraria and Minecraft (Did you play eithier when they were in their infant stages?) you have to do something in order to build pretty things. Minecraft gave us creative mode to get around this, Terraria you have to mod it in, you've supposedly found everything the game has to offer, there is NOTHING LEFT for someone of your obviously vast knowledge and player skill, so why not build a mega project? You've found all these cities and temples, take all their stuff and build something AWESOME. You know why? Tiy already said awesome submissions have a chance of getting into the game, so make a totally badass city that everyone will go "Holy shit this Cael guy was a badass to make this in Beta!" That'd be actively participating in the beta in some form, instead of complaining about the game lacking content, and being unfinished in it's infant stage though.

Funny, that we're being forced to spend time grinding out gear and that pads out the game somehow. I took a couple of mining expeditions on my starting planet and wound up with enough resources to jump straight to titanium gear, with only the need to set up a refinery and convert all the older materials (copper, silver, now gold) into pixels to solve that grind. If anything, with the new combat mechanics, I was able to do in half the time what it took me to do with the original system because I wasn't living in constant terror of being one shotted while I scavenged planets for the ore I needed to survive in that tier. In fact I only had to spend about an hour on a planet in Gamma quadrant to get enough titanium to craft everything I wanted and summon the boss. Most of my time has been spent jetting about the cosmos, meeting new and interesting people, and taking their cool looking furniture.

First. Just because my opinions don't agree with yours, doesn't mean I'm trolling. Yelling "troll!!" Is how 5 year olds win an internet fight. Second, complain about the game lacking content? This is beta. Not alpha. Excuse me for requesting the need for more content in the stage where content is added before release. No one improves without criticism.

Also, my whole point was the idea that ALL DEM RECIPES for eye hats and all that, were pointless. There are no end game bosses. And 99% of those recipes are just weak aesthetics so they benefit me in no combat way.
For example, in terraria. There are sky islands with fanvy swords that shoot stars. Or spellbooks. Or in their dungeons were useful npcs i could take home. All I find in chests in this game, are recipes for a sword 50% weaker than mine, and blueprints to make a mushroom chest. When I go in an aryan dungeon, do I find a hidden boss with cool loot? Do I find a hidden backstory on the torturing that happened in the dungeon? Do I rescue an npc and bring him back to my base on that planet? No. I find a few axes. Some pixels. Maybe a flare.
I want a reason to explore. I've found the crystal biome. Its just a different texture. There are no crystal golem bosses with themed armor. No crystal palaces long abadoned with a story as to why. There are more marine prisons, and aryan dungeons, and chests with nothing good. There is no reason for me to go back except "hah. Thats pretty".

So like I said to the last guy. Instead of shoving your head up your butt being such an elite beta tester, debate with me like an adult. Tell me how my suggestions can be improved to suit your needs.

This game will STAY in the infant stages with people like you running around yelling troll at every critical remark.

Weird. Logged in and went from... what is it Aegisalt armor to I think the top tier Imperivum armor in just a couple hours. It is slow in the beginning but then zooms forward at a breakneck speed it seems but that is likely because the system hasn't been fleshed out yet. Anyways, just wanted to mention that if anyone was concerned about slow pacing.
