Clonk Rage

Before Minecraft and Terraria, there was Clonk. It's a 2D platforming/mining/crafting game developed in Germany. I'm just wondering how many people in this forum used to play that game? The controls might have been clunky and hard to master, the maps pre-generated, and the craftable items not too plenty... but I remember it being a blast to play!

Anyways, I'm thinking that there's some mechanics from that game which I hope can be implemented in Starbound as well, one of those the water/oil pump. It works by building a pump, buying a waterline which you then connect to it, and traversing the map to throw the other end of the line to a body of water or oil.
See this video to see it in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=w4ANgg5_cX4#t=406s

Edit: Probably should have posted this under "suggestions". Mods, please move if necessary.

Now that I think of it, Stranded was German too. It's basically Minecraft without a block based world and came out ten years ago.

Hey, Clonk looks like a lot of fun.

And I agree liquid pumps & pipes could be handy, although it's kind of low priority for me.

Oh gawd, i remember that game
the controls were so awful, the "rage" part of the name was completly justified
    and yet, i loved it...

But knowing how starbound works, i'd say you have to bulid the pipes yourself, instead of just making one pipe and stretching it all across the map...
    But who knows...

Yeah Clonk was awesome... the hundreds of hours i have put into Clonk4 together with my friend when we played on the same pc with splitscreen. The awesome possibilities with modding and and and.

Then Clonk Planet came and was pretty close to Clonk4 and you had so many things to do =D

The way how your clonk could pass through the world by slowly learning how to "hangle" (climb the ceiling), how his speed in climbing/hangling became better the more you used it so in the end you could nearly outrun an elevator ... and and and :D

The game simply was full of awesome possibilities and ideas C:

I did not play Clonk Rage but look what WarStalker did in CLonk Rage :p

which he seems to try to add to starbound in a slightly similar way aswell :DDD

So yes Clonk is awesome!! :3

Stranded does sound like Minecraft. It could probably have been more popular if it included terraforming and was not limited to 7 buildings.

There's probably lots of good German produced games that we know nothing about. One thing I've noticed though, is that most games coming out from there have terrible controls.

Really loved the way Clonk allowed mixed split-screen and LAN (4 players on 2 PCs), we've sunk countless hours as well playing it that way. Also yeah, the lite RPG element of swimming, running, or climbing stats increasing by how often you use them was a nice addition as well.

Is WarStalker a Clonk modder? His post under suggestions is awesome! I really do hope that Starbound gets the modding API correct unlike Minecraft.

Yeah stranded 2 was a really nice game yet too limited, but it gave those playing it great inspiration and thus lead to other good games which is a pro and could credit for :3

Well there are many good games from germany, we got games like:
    • Albion
    • Aquanox
    • Battle isle
    • Anno
    • Crysis / Far Cry
    • Gothic
    • Sacred
    • Spellforce
    • Paraworld
    • Drakensang
    • the X Series (X-BTF, X-Tension, X², X³ and the upcoming X-Rebirth)
to name a few, sure not all got the best controls but compared to the average of controlls we "know" from other games it isnt bad :D

Yes he is modding Clonk Rage but didnt make the mod public yet. But since he modded clonk rage with that concept for a while i think that he got some experience in balancing his idea so when starbounds modding gets available we might see a nice complex mod from him C:

  8. Was. Around 5 or 7 years ago. Though with my current knowledge and experience it won't be a problem to continue, I dropped development of modpack for some reason, I don't remember. Maybe it was because I went to the college, or maybe it was because I joined army, or some other reason.

Thanks, Starbound will get epic modding API, I spoke with developers Kyren, Bartwe and Omni lots of times about modding API, and they said it will be.

    • Albion - almost forgot that I played it.
    • Aquanox - one of the greatest underwater futuristic simulator adventure. Both 1 & 2.
    • Battle isle - one of my favorite hardcore turn-based strategies. Mobile Bunker FTW! Best was Battle Isle 3.
    • Anno - one of the greatest economic + warfare RTS hybrids.
    • Crysis / Far Cry - nuff said.
    • Gothic - one of the greatest RPGs with epic story.
    • Sacred - uh... interesting diablo clone :)
    • Spellforce - epic RTS/RPG hybrid with epic story.
    • Paraworld - didn't played it, but played very similar game long time ago. I think it was 1995s.
    • Drakensang - didn't played it.
    • the X Series (X-BTF, X-Tension, X², X³ and the upcoming X-Rebirth) - uh, played it too much. Except last one.

Something I noticed playing all these German games. Germans like to make hardcore games with hardcore controls and I respect that. Germans like to mix sci-fi and fantasy in one world - something I always trying to do.

P.S. Making real modpack is harder. If you making the mod, you just need to know coding and API to make one. When you're making a modpack, you need to read through other people's source code, fix it, make it compatible with other mod's source codes and only then recompile and turn it in to one modpack :)

Those memories. Played it with three other friends (so four people in total) on ONE PC with ONE keyboard. That was fun. Also I was pretty good with those controls, well at least in CE and CR (havent played the others). Also i highly recomend the EKE reloaded pack if you want a bit more futuristic setting.

  12. T-Bone Biggins

Clonk had crap controls. This is what I remember most about it. Not sure which version it was, it was the free version at the time and the free version is always an older one while the dev sold the latest. I skipped it over and like a year later Minecraft hit the world, though it was mostly unknown when I found it. Clonk had/has nothing over Minecraft. And IMO Minecraft will have little over Starbound other than one extra dimension. In fact, if Starbound was taken to the 3rd dimension Minecraft could easily become completely obsolete.

    Stranded 3 is in development.

  14. Clonk had Hardcore Controls, not crap controls. But when you got used to these controls, playing Clonk was pure fun.

    Asrashas likes this.
  15. T-Bone Biggins

    T-Bone Biggins Phantasmal Quasar

I would usually counter-argue that but controls aside I think Clonk did a lot of things wrong. In Clonk the resources were way too finite for most maps and several other issues I won't go into typing right now. Really Clonk only does well in the Worms-styled deathmatch field. This is just my personal opinion but if you consider Clonk as a Worms type of game with construction it's alright, but I never liked Worms

  16. Clonk is a hardcore game with limited resources. But if you were incapable to play it and have fun playing it - it's completely your problem. The Only problem Clonk (Endeavor and Rage) had is crappy optimization for total destruction of everything...

  17. T-Bone Biggins

    T-Bone Biggins Phantasmal Quasar

Ok, you pushed me. Something that sucks does not = hardcore like you say my friend. Controls suck you say they are hardcore. No, they just suck. Game mechanics are flawed and you say hardcore. No they are just flawed. You love the game then great, just don't apply false definitions of what it is. And optimization was not the only problem of those games, trust me. If that was the case there would be a larger player-base. Which there isn't. Ok, I shall un-watch this thread and walk away before the flames try to burn me.

  18. It's purely your personal opinion. For you Clonk sucks, because its too hard for you to play it, for me it awesome and hardcore for exactly same reason, because it's HARD to play.

FYI, Battle Toads also were hardcore and exactly for this reason, it was unsuitable for lot of casual players, like Clonk for you. And I don't see here any flame wars starting, it's your imagination. I agree Clonk was too hard for too much people, thus most gamers never played it.

Please understand, bad or good (as other synonyms) is just yours, mine and other people's opinion. And opinions are meant to be different for each living being.
