Client-side characters universes/worlds

I was curious how different characters will be client side. Mainly in regards with the things you've done on some worlds or even your space station with another character.

One of the things I liked having the option of in Terraria was being able to go to my "main" world with a different, more underdeveloped character, and drop off/pick up stuff (like ant lion mandibles, those were hard as hell to find). So the question is will there be different "Universes"? Will I be able to have a brand new space station for a new character, while still being able to visit my other one for my more advanced character? If I will (or won't) be able to, can I visit my main's homeworld on another character? And would the two be independent of each other (can't visit the main's space station, but can visit the developed world, or vice versa)?

EDIT: While I do enjoy the slight debate going on, I do want to point out that the initial question was how singleplayer character's worlds would be handled. I'm good with the speculation on how multiplayer will work, but I just don't think we know enough about the game to make much aside from vague suggestions. That doesn't mean stop, but if someone gets info on singleplayer characters, then please don't hesitate to answer.

I'd like to see every person's space station (at least in online play) have its own set of coordinates. This way, my friends can just drop by the station and say what's up, or we could group up before going on our next mining expedition. And also I could send my other characters there, to use the station as a sort of "shared stash".

I think the online play will be based per server with 1 space station hub. Though as i have stated in other posts, i do not like the idea of being able to bring items to different servers like you could in Terraria. I would prefer per server inventory more than anything with online play xD. Its just... a lot safer that way. (I am a big anti-cheats player. Do it by hand or dont play with me. Needless to say iv been burned by those who used /give commands in minecraft servers. (I spend a week making something that looks neat. The next morning someone who spent all night using /give has a castle 19 times the size of my dinky little building... Owch.) Plus, we dont want someone thats a friend of your friend jumping in and throwing 99 sticks of dynamite everywhere *rolls eyes* (*has also been hit by that before*)

True enough. I hope it works the way that Diablo works... you have single player characters (stored client-side, so you can mod and do whatever you please) and you've got multiplayer players (stored server-side, can't be tampered with, can still have their personal inventories)

Of course, this is only a pipe dream, since it's pretty much impossible unless Starbound has its own dedicated servers (which I'm sure it won't)

Maybe. That could work so long as 'Creative' servers used singleplayer characters instead of the server saved character. Like open battle.net and closed battle.net.

Hopefully chucklefish would use this. But probably not as you said.

Unfortunately, there are usually ways around most things like this. It's a players choice if they want to ruin the game for themselves by cheating.

Yeah but someone ruining the game for themselves can also ruin it for others. My example above is why. Someone suddenly building skyscraper next to your hut that you worked hard to build and they cheated (it was a friends server. He had it enabled and most of everyone didnt use it. Someone else popped in and didnt know the courtesy of the group and suber-made a castle next to my little hub)? Yeah. Thats not cool. And in minecraft, how does one cheat in items? I thought that was all stored server side (which is a pretty damn effective way of keeping people from cheating in inventory).

I get what you mean about that. But the thing is, you know that you made it legitly, and that they cheated. That should make you feel good that you were able to do it legit, while that other person couldn't. I don't know the most effective solution for it. I don't think it should be like Minecraft, where characters are locked into worlds. I'm not a programmer, so I can honestly say I don't have the best idea what to do. I do believe that what the devs decide will be a good system.

Sorry, when i log into vent and people are consistently complimenting this person at how awsome they did. Its a slight turnoff. Especialy when they build it -immediately next to your house-. Sure i know i didnt cheat. But it doesnt stop the feeling of being cheated myself. We all like compliments from our friends. When someone cheats, and then gets a huge compliment from everyone about how awsome the thing is they built. Makes you feel a little bad sometimes.

In contrast, terraria had a singleplayer - multiplayer crossover. It was annoying seeing people with 99 stacks of dynamite. Things of that sort. I then went introverted with Terraria after the 5th guy blew the shit out of my stuff / killed me without pvp on. Not cool. If they could manage an open battle.net and closed battle.net system that would be amazing. Cheating is a lot harder when the server handles your inventory, not your client. Sure, they might be able to fly around or whatever maybe. But if the inventory is held by the server. The guy cant cheat in items easily in the least. Maybe dupe if he finds a glitch. But not hack. Not without the server having it on :3

Well, if there are going to be player-made servers, then I don't see why there wouldn't be options to disable commands and such. Perhaps there could even be a ban weapons selections for people who want a strictly creative server with making your own stuff out of your own things. There could also be an option for the server master to allow people to have their items in-game or basically start off as a newbie without anything in that server. This would work well with RP servers and the like as well as mesh really well with client-saved characters.

I do like Terraria's way of doing it, where your character plays through all servers as the same person and you don't lose your items and such when playing different worlds or servers like in Minecraft.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

While it was convenient being able to use the same guy, if we have the option to disable single-player items on our server that would be a win-win situation. Its all i personally want. To turn off any items earned outside of the server and you have to start at ground level to work your way up. Its a perfect way to avoid cheated characters while simultaneously allowing people that you dont exactly know able to play it without jumping in with rank 100 gear and The Nuclear Armament.

While letting others do their thing :)

I do like the idea of people being able to set that kind of stuff in their specific server. That way, everyone ends up happy. Cheaters can cheat, legiters can legit, and raccoons can raccoon.

The best solution that I can think of is let the person running the server choose if people can keep items from singleplayer, which would possibly keep the server load lighter because it takes from the connecting players files (and doesn't have to keep an inventory for every player). The problem with that solution is if someone modifies their game files then they can throw dynamite like it was going out of style.

The other option would be don't let other players keep their inventory going into a server, this fixes the problem of people modifying their gamefiles for easy items. One issue I can think of with taking this route is if armor/items play as major of a role as they did in Terraria then it'll keep a lot of people from playing in servers. Also if there are something along the line of mutations (increase jump height, damage done), then you'd also have to get rid of those when you join a server also (if people can modify their inventory then they'll probably change these too).

My opinion, while there are some issues with people letting take their singleplayer items into a server, I think that unless they give the game a level system, then its better than the alternative. Three ways I can think of to make it better would be make it so you can appoint admins (who would then kick offenders), a vote-kick system (Player <X> wants to kick player <Y> for <reason>), and keep it so only 2 kick attempts per player, against per person (if I wanted to kick someone, I would only be able to initiate the voting twice, after that its up to someone else to start it). Or the third way of handling it would be make it so people can keep their armor/accessories, the biggest issue with that would be people could then modify those parts of the game files.

TL;DR: Let individual servers have a choice of accepting singleplayer items, and put in an admin system/vote-kick system so if they do accept singleplayer items, the cheaters get kicked/banned from said server.

That would definately work as well! Flexibility would be good. A good system would definately be a simple closed/open system like diablo 2 had. Or something xD. Definately agree to your post though Squirrel.

I like Soft Served Squirrel's idea. I liked the ability to get multiplayer stuff on my singleplayer character in Terraria, but it let hackers get in more easily. The ability to choose would be great.

I was just pondering this. It's really got me concerned, I would love an answer to this. Like with Terraria and the ability to "hack" your personal inventory, it really killed some of the multiplayer worlds for me. Also, if it's possible to make cheating as close to "impossible as possible"(TM) would be awesome, since once you've boosted your character, it kinda ruins the challenge/excitement.

    HOLY THREAD NECRO BATMAN.

It is my understand that server admins will be able to choose if characters are stored client or server side, thus restricting who is able to join their server.

Obviously without some relatively serious 'hacks' modding your character on a server side save would be extremely difficult.

ACK! I had done a couple of forum searches looking for an answer to my question, and saw this thread. I replied to it without seeing the date!
