This sounds awkward, but I have the exact opposite opinions about a true villain, but that's simply my opinion on the matter. I think motives aren't that important fora villain; a villain is made not by what makes them, but by what they makes of themselves.

I do know the type of villain I'd be good at playing. I'd be a manipulative power grabbing mastermind, equivalent to a politician. In fact, he'd probably be a demagogue, appearing as a champion and hero to the people, but in fact not planning on doing anything he promises, especially when he's in power. He'd then take a Stalin-like view to ruling. Or even better, a Mao-like view of ruling. He would also delight in deceiving everyone into thinking he cares about them. Power is the only thing he cares about, and he'll do anything to cement his power. He'd also probably be a Psion in DnD, literally reading others' minds and mentally forcing them to follow him, some in the form of thralls.

 

i think i would be the "dangerously genre-savvy". no monologuing, no orders to "take the hero alive", no leaving giant obvious weak points, etc.

Well my character would definitely not order heroes to be taken alive, they're a threat to his power, they need to be eliminated as quick as possible. He wouldn't need to monologue, as the flash of realization as he orders death to someone who thought he was nice would be all the reaction he needed. The execution would happen immediately, so they couldn't escape. And to order death, he'd make up an elaborate lie about how they are an enemy to the state for whatever reason to give to the people or they were killed doing their mission, using his Psion powers to make it all the more convincing.
