The Emotional Koala thing isn't cute, it's confusing.

They could do both. Like "v1.2.1 Enraged Koala".

  3. It is cute, and honestly not that confusing either.

I thought they started putting that in the title screen. o_O

Maybe that was just the unstable version they did that.... Could be wrong, but I do know I saw something other than the emotion on the title screen. Was a build number of sorts...

I'm pretty sure that was the unstable version. I haven't used the stable version recently though, so I don't know for certain.

I'd rather have real version numbers too. Don't have any emotion response to the cutesy names though. It's just unorganized. But I guess they start using real versioning once it gets serious

Alrighty then. The next version will be titled:

    R351PnI83700.35j

Which is totally and obviously better than what we have now. :sarcasm:

There is a build number now (662 or something) so... Not that confusing no...

Once it gets serious, I fully expect "Serious Koala" or some other Serious animal if they switch it up in phase 2.

Interesting solution, but staying with the usual system of 0.2.1, 0.2.2 and the likes seems a tad more practical. I doubt anybody new to Starbound would recognize the newest version if there was no kind of order. Which isn't worth the benefit of being cute.

What's the benefit of being humorless?

By my reckoning it's Stable 9.6 and Unstable 9.7 but I could be off by one or two either way. That title screen info is no help.

    actually I was thinking 9.9 & 9.10...lol

The title screen definitely doesn't really help. I can not really tell the difference between stable & unstable... Not really marked far as I know anywhere on that title screen, hmm.... Unsure.><

So...what do real version numbers add? You can say "Well, then we know that Patch 1.09 comes after 1.08!" That would be true...but why does it matter? Theoretically, everyone should be playing on the latest version and they should be stating their version (enraged koala 20140228, 1.08, deepthoughtskoala, etc) when they report bugs.

Outside of "There is no number system, therefore it is bad!" what is the point?

The issue comes with Stable and Unstable version bug reporting.

When you say "Enraged Koala" - it could be multiple versions.
Also for Unstable Koala - with auto steam update. Some people may not know they have been updated to the next version.
Some people might have auto updates disabled hence have a previous version of unstable.

Hence for precise bug reporting - Proper versioning is required.
    =
Previously this was not an issue as everyone had a single version of the game.
Now with multiple versions floating in the field a proper versioning system is needed.

I have two versions, both of which I manually update. Poppycock's Unstable that I update normally and test with and then Fiben's serious play version that gets updated once I finally decide if Poppycock's interim unstable fixes aren't catastrophically game breaking. Sure, it makes no never mind in the long run, but knowing where I am with a consistent build number makes it all that easier to track.

I mean, I'm only guessing that Eraged came out as build 9, had 5 (?) unstable additions before a 9.6 stable version and recently had another update to 9.7? Who the fork knows?

Also another way to look at it:
Clearer version labeling would help people archive the developments progress in a more orderly fashion. Minecraft has to be one of the most documented games of all time, and while some updates got cute names, they where also usually tagged numerically too.

Also cleaner patch notes would help so the wiki isn't filled with things like:
*Some extra boring bug fixes not listed here

I'm not blaming the wiki maker, or the editors as they are doing a great job with whats provided. I'm just noting it would likely assist. It would demonstrate clearly how far Starbound has come in the coming years. True this is all secondary to developing the game- but I think are worth mentioning as reasons to include such things.

true true. I usually count every time they updated for each edition. 9 been the name I believe, and the number being how many updates it had through out. I guess I do a total. So yeah stable would be a 9.6, since the start of this division; while the unstable would be 9.10. Which includes that stable among that oddly.

I have an awkward method I guess, but can keep track in that way which I have. I have a habit to backup the entire directory, and then only keeping the most stable one of the edition. I have prior stable versions backed up on my terabyte.... As well characters/worlds to go along with those.

Usually backup my characters before even opening steam. I play without it, so I am one to not usually know when update comes in right away. Just glad at least on the title it has number beyond the name of the update, even if I have my own logical number scheme in mind. o_O (deduced conclusion)
