Christmas update concern

This is probably the best answer to the entire thread, gotta say. Thanks for that. This may be best solved by a direct line to the proper recipient, not by expecting anything particularly useful from our equally unknowing peers, aside from your own suggestion.

 

Well, these are the official forums. I don't see why a legitimate concern couldn't be raised here, much like any other suggestion or issue to do with the game.
As long as the devs see it and something's done about it, I guess.

 

As this discussion has had a few replies for and against my concern, I will indeed send a message off to support regarding it with a link back to this thread. An e-mail is by no means a replacement for discussion, and I did to some point feel that my fellow forum members would be able to pitch in with their thoughts on the matter. I could have very easily been wrong, though after the responses made to this thread by others I do not believe that I was.

 

What I meant to say, and really should have, in my initial post here was that I appreciate your consideration for others. You saw something incorrect and spoke up about it, and that is a very nice and thoughtful thing to have done. It's too bad your concern was met with trolls, handwavers, and strangely grandiose fractal arguments that seemed to miss the point. I guess I'm apologizing for the whole thread.

I hope your communication to those of actual authority is met with the kind of answer you were actually looking for.

I'm Jewish and I didn't even notice. To be fair, Hanukkah is a minor holiday. If it's going to be changed it should be 9 candles, though.

As a former member of staff, why not contact them directly with this rather than raise attention to it here?

 

I do not have any special method of contact that the average user does not. I raised the concern to the forums first to ensure I was on the right track, and now that I have a better idea of things I've sent an e-mail and await response.

 

Honestly, as someone raised jewish... my main concern is if they will wipe my planet and ship again when the holiday is over and they de-christmahannukah the game. That being said... the rocket sled is sweeeeeeeeeeeet and im rockin the menorah anyway.

 

Hanukkah finished on the 5th anyway. Who celebrates Hanukkah on Christmas?

Yeah, Atheist and non-Jewish might not, why would they? But do you know who might? A fucking Jewish person. Be tentative with religion and respect people's rights to practice it. If it's gonna be represented, it should really be represented properly.

awesome.. thats exactly what i was thinking: some ppl start making a fuss about nothing, while the ppl that might be offended dont care at all

pls go and figth for something that matters.. no grown up will give a shit about a symbol in a game. its just a vanity item. maybe you suffer from a loss of reality.
if i would be offended by something like that i would really question my believes. nobody disrespected anything nor was anybody stopped practicing their religion.
as if any mentally healthy person would practise their religion in a game. they might put up stuff like that cos it looks nice.. but practicing religion in a game? rly? srsly? you gotta be kidding

how do i have to imagine this? so i call all my family to meet me in starbound to celebrate christmas/hanukkah, but sadly we now cant practise our religion properly, cos they got a symbol wrong? i have to say: if i were really religious i would be ashmed to honor my believes in such a way...

 

I think people are missing the point. OP is concerned about 5 candles versus 7 , or apparently it's 9 according to the Jewish person who posted it. However, we just don't know the reason why it was 5 . It might have been an oversight, it might have been to offend (which I highly doubt), it might be that the person who did it belongs to a different jewish sect where 5 candles represents what it represents to them.

I think the question is : Does the OP want the devs to change it ? Or Does he just want an explanation. or does he/she want the community to discuss the issue.

I think we've accomplished that. From what I gather there are a few viewpoints.

Some people think that if the devs are trying to represent a religion or holiday that they should do it accurately and they should fix the "mistake".

Other's don't care if it is accurate or not, and it doesn't matter to them what the devs do.

Other people feel that it is offensive to inaccurately portray a holiday for a certain religion.

Also, if we really want to get into a discussion about this like deep hardcore. We would probably have to define some terms : "religion", "offensive", and "taking action ". Also, we would probably have to go and research the different types of Judaism, also people would probably have to know the definition of an "atheist".

It was brought up to prevent offense, which is what I said in an earlier post. Don't be an idiot just because you don't see hoards of religious compliant threads. Coal and wood literally effect every person who plays the game so naturally you would see more of them. No one forced him to act, except for the drive to help what Jewish folk that are put off by this. don't be ignorant just because you fail to understand others' beliefs.
