Christmas update concern

I've been taking a look through the new content. Couple good things in there, feels good, and I'm glad that saplings have arrived (even if they're all named <todo>).

One thing I noticed out of place though, were the Hanukkah items. Not the fact that they're in there, I really do like the variance and have no religious take on the holiday myself. What I did notice however was the Menorah. It only has 5 candles. Now, I'm not Jewish myself and I don't have good contact with those that are in my family, but the traditional symbol has 7 and those that you light are meant to have 9; 1 for each of the 8 days that the sacred oil lasted and the middle being the holder for the candle you use to light the rest.

Was this intentional perhaps? Should it be fixed? Why only 5? It seems offensive to me.

With how touchy people can be with religion it could be a legitimate concern.

Does it honestly matter? We know what it is and what its supposed to represent. If this is going to start offending people, then its simple, don't spawn one.

I gave this consideration, but have you seen the giant snowflake? It just seems off to me.

This is not a troll post, I seek to understand why this is the way it is. They went through some amount of effort to include so many Christmas items, and while there are not many from other religions the items are there. And I just feel that if you're going to do something, you should either do it right or not at all. If this were not a religious item then it wouldn't really matter because then you're doing what you do to avoid copyright claims. But it is.

Most people celebrate Christmas. It's just kinda how it is.

It's probably just an artist mistake that it's missing a few candles. They likely knew of it, but didn't really pay a large amount of attention to details for other things, likely because it's not their main holiday. This thread should bring it to their attention, at least.

    At least they tried.

And that really is my intention: To get it out here. I'm not some angry ex-staff member looking for a grudge. I'm sure I could do far better than a simple religious debate if that were the case. And if this is an error on part of the artist, then it should be a simple fix.

That aside, I do hope that everyone enjoys the content and has a Happy Holiday season.

I highly doubt that this is an error on the artist's part, they even went so far as to add in a dradle. This suggests that they should at least be familiar enough with the religion to know how many candles a menorah actually has.
Hell, I know nothing about Hanukkah, but at the very base of it all I know a menorah has 9, and 7 candles- Depending on the type. If he knew it well enough to get the design down without a reference, one would think he would also know the correct number of branches.

That being said, even if he wasn't sure it seems very unlikely that he would take a random stab at it considering the religious symbolism it holds.

People read too much into things, and are too easily offended.

In space, depending upon the rotation of the planet around the solar system's sun a day, week, month or year may be shorter or longer. It could very well be that the five candles indicates that the item originated in such a system.

    (slam dunk)

Alright, I have to give you credit for this. You've given it some thought at least and to a point it's feasible. However, keep in mind that these things are for us, the people behind the screens, and may not themselves be any sort of canon to the game itself. The idea is to give us these real-world representations to celebrate our holidays with us, not to create in-game holidays to celebrate as such. I am not opposed to such a system and it would be a neat touch if each of the races had their own events at differing points of the year. What it comes down to in the end is that this was named as and meant to represent a real world religious item, so I don't think your explanation quite fits. Thanks for posting.

Granted, I get that your point is to join in the trolling, but I'll give you a response regardless.

In Kwanzaa the Kinara candles consist of 3 red, 3 green, and black in the middle. As for the Festivus pole, I don't believe we'll be seeing any holiday strippers this year, sorry.

Well I did a little tiny bit of searching and I found a wiki-answers that said a 5 candle menorah is used for the mourning of a deceased parent.
