I don't know if I'm the only one to be bugged or not, by the mostly unrealistic space that most chests have! I'm in support of a change to all containers, similar to the 'Rebalanced Chests' mod, which would change the amount of things all containers can hold. This change would make smaller chests have less room, large chests have double the space of small chests, (Probably around 6 slots for a small chest, 12 for a large.) It's a pretty basic change that would make the player find more impressive containers for their crap! Perhaps more advanced items can hold more items? Small futuristic chests holding say, 16 items over the default 12 for it's size. Crates would also be changed, as their size would dictate how much you can fit in them. I'd say crates would be the best choice for storage, with their stackable nature. Hopefully, this would also change what players might find in randomly generated chests! Perhaps regular spawned crates could hold food or seeds, or maybe ammo and fabric. Furniture containers like Cabinets and whatnot could hold more appropriate items, like fabric or clothing pieces.
Err... get Apex containers. The smallest unit takes 2x2 space while it can contain 16 items. How they cram 16 items in a small (stackable, by the way) unit that would take a large chest or a crate is beyond me... So, in a way, it's already implemented.
Is the goal to limit the storage space that new players have access to, and create incentive for them to use the newer/higher-technology storage as they find it? If so, then this would have that consequence. Or, would you rather have it that storage units are largely identical, and only have cosmetic differences? This would mean players can have a medieval castle and not be penalized for not using space age storage crates (aside from chests not stacking on each other). I think that the status quo supports the immersion feeling of using the materials that your own personal theme desires. At least, it will when people start building bases and villages and not just using their space ship as a warehouse.
The devs surely meant to point out that size doesn't matter. Stupid jokes aside, I would like the size of the container to relate to storage space. I would *not* like techy items to have more storage space (because the argument of theme-ly containers convinced me, and also because an old chest holds a big wheel of cheese just as good as my 21st century suitcase). Alas, I'm pretty sure the current state of affairs is not meant to be final. Quite commonplace to have container size correlate with container space, wouldntyathink?
I'm in support of the primary goal, but It'd also be pretty interesting to have a challenge like small inventory space forcing players to go exploring for bigger chests made with newer technology. And while players could rely on their ship as a warehouse, I think having a better decorated home would serve to hold more than five or six crates stacked on each other.
True, true. I wrote this pretty late last night. The idea was that better technology would've amplified the chests' holding space by a few slots, as a bonus for the player finding the rare item.
