Cheating Concerns - Any way to combat it?

They don't really have any real reason means to combat cheating, what are they really suppose to do?
Put the game on a steam server and have VAC on it? Also it's not a open multiplayer game,
there's no reason to spend time making a complex system to avoid cheating in the game.

Hopefully they will give server owners the means to combat this.

If my memory dont serve me wrong then they are going to allow modding, so server protection should be possible.

Great, Torchlight 2 all over again. Seriously people, this is not an MMO, this is not a competitive game, but here goes. I can understand the problem with griefers for people running large servers, because it is a valid concern. And the Chucklefish guys stated that there will be server commands, they are just not in yet. How about you give them time until say.. the game is actually working as intended? Maybe stage 2 or stage 3 of the beta? Until then we won't be holding onto our stuff too long anyway. Case in point the probable wipe due to changing the whole progression system. So take a chill pill and wait until the server software and the game are feature complete, and then start the doom and gloom about teh evil hackz0rz ruining your fun.

I was discussing something similar in another thread.

I don't like cheats, but it's unreasonable to try to stop all of them. And with Starbound not being a PVP-centric game, Chucklefish will likely do little to address third-party tools like Cheat Engine. I DO expect CF to address all exploits and cheats inherent to their own coding. Outside of that, yes, it does decrease my enjoyment to see people cheating, but there is only so much that can be done.

    No need for official anti-cheat.

Either make your own anti-cheat with mods and keep it on YOUR servers, or don't try and tell me how to play the SANDBOX game I purchased with MY money.

And that kind of "protection" would take anyone who puts their mind to it a day to break at the most.

Morale of the story: You CANNOT protect anything that isn't under your control - The only way to make a truly cheat free experience is to have everything running serverside, with clients sitting AT the server while being looked over the shoulder by the host.

Which would of course be a very bad and unreasonable idea for Starbound. It's not Counter-Strike competitive, it's not the experience CF is shooting for. Can't stop all the cheats, and for games like this, there's not much incentive to try to.

I completely feel your pain unfortunately most of the starbound community seems to think doing these shameful things are alright...

Or maybe we're just not young and naive youngsters - We're realists. The game isn't going to have any kind of security measures that will block out hacking. No game that operates like this does.

I think that they've said cheating is just going to 'be there' because they don't want to limit modders. Not only that but I doubt it's worth the effort. Cheating only affects those around you, so it will only affect you if you play with a cheater. (which can be frustrating because if you go online to play with others you're exposing yourself to this possibility)

I wish they would do something to counter it, but I know they probably don't have the resources. Just have to accept the things you can't change ya know?

Lol I can tell your being sarcastic but what you just said sounds like the perfect idea to me, use vac to combat cheating.

VAC is about as secure as a sieve...

And Minecraft isn't safe from hacking either... I swear some people and their naive comments.

It isn't safe but if you try you get perma banned and can no longer play on authentic servers just like steam bans hackers.

Please don't add any fuel to the fire, he's been on and on about offical servers in his own thread too. As I stated further up, how about we wait until the server and the game are feautre complete, before we summon the feast of crows and give ourselves to the reckoning. Talking about cheaters and hackers and people ruining your experience while we're in the early beta stages is idiotic, as nobody can predict what will happen to the game.

So in your opinion, people should be banned and not being let play the game they purchased because you don't like their playstyle? A game that was nowhere, ever advertised as a competitive title, or an online title? Wow man.. just wow.

Oh no worries - I'm done with him at this point. There's a clear lack of even the most basic understanding of the topic for me to bother discussing it with such "gold nugget" responses...

As unfair as it sounds to you yes that's how I feel, I also feel people who didn't fairly purchase this game like the rest shouldn't be allowed to play on the same servers.
