Cheating Concerns - Any way to combat it?

I'm sorry if I've overlooked something. I did a basic search and didn't see anything in this forum. I was wondering if they're planning on combating cheating in any way - cloud saves, some kind of .exe monitoring, etc.
I was playing with two friends of mine the other day (I was not cheating) only to find out they're running around on higher level planets with some kind of (almost) invincibility cheat running. It was pretty upsetting, but there was no point in telling them to stop - they would have just gotten angry and played without me. Which only makes me fear it's a matter of time until the amount of cheating in this game rises to Diablo 1/Terraria and many other games that suffer from cheating.

    Mostly, my concerns are:
How easy it is to make a trainer, for all characters, even when you're playing on someone else's server, enabling infinite health, infinite energy, infinite pixels, and more I'm sure.
    Duping items.

What hasn't happened yet, but I see as likely:
Some multiplayer servers will offer the ability to stock your character with items for free (this will likely be through server command abuse, if it becomes possible).
I know there can be whitelist servers, but even with whitelist servers they won't be able to combat someone using a trainer for nigh-invulnerability like my friends were using.

It's very likely I missed a thread about this before, but I didn't see anything in my primary search results for "cheating" - if this topic has been covered before, I'm sorry and please delete it.

well, starbound isnt a mmo-game, so if you want to play online with your friends you can just set up your own server and define the rules before you start playing. imo, starbound isnt fun when playing on a public server with strangers.

I have to agree, cheating like that not only breaks the momentum of the game, but what bothers me the most is that you can use it both single player, multiplayer with friends you know and online with strangers.

I am perfectly fine with people cheating as much as they want solo/with friends on their own server. As long as they stay out of non-cheaters, which how it is now, they are not, and there is the problem.

Well, since its designed to be modable I'm not sure I understand where your coming from. This is all to be expected. Its up to the user how they want to play.

Right now the Starbound servers are almost completely clientside. So I don't think there will be any combat to cheating until closer to the release date; unless someone releases a mod that has admin commands or a way for the server to verify the packets that the clients send to make sure that they're legitimate.

Once server-side characters are an option, this won't matter. If someone wants to cheat in single player, let 'em.
I used a memory editor to duplicate decoy princesses so my entire party could get the starmap upgrade after we realized it only dropped one. Atleast until release, I don't see any issue with it unless you're doing it maliciously.

My only concern is difficulty for server owners to combat cheating and a (possible) lack of cloud-based or server-based characters - and also, with server-based characters, the possibility of not being able to save them to your PC later on, which some games suffer when they have server-side only characters.
Also the ability to cheat on someone else's server is a little concerning for me. Hopefully this will be addressed later. I do not mind if someone cheats by themselves... although that's still disappointing.

Get some non cheating friends, put a password on your server, PROBLEM SOLVED!

The Pokemon games handle anti-cheating very well. I don't know exactly how it works, but if you use a device like an Action Replay on the DS to hack in Pokemon, you can't trade the cheated Pokemon at all, even if it's a level 1 pidgey. A google search could probably tell you how it works.

Server-side characters will not fix the glaring issue of players being able to simply download a trainer and cheat in multiplayer with no complications whatsoever.

Atm, i'm more worried about Griefing then Cheating, cause not everyone is as lucky as me at having good friends to MP with... though even in this case, one never knows if unclean pranking could happen.

I've seen a Screenie of someone who had placed a Propeller & 2 Sawblades onto someone else's Teleporter Area of their Ship to permanently deny access to the Ship for that Ship's Owner. Game Killer right there. Griefing needs to be attacked before Cheating is, since it's the lower level & more prevalent Monster to beat up first... then afterwards, Anti-Cheating strategies will be welcome. :)

Priority 1: Methinks Player Ships need that same protection stuff that Homeworlds have where only the Owner of the Homeworld/Ship should be able to place or destroy stuff in the Ship & noone else, not even other Members of the Ship Owner's Party.

Lets just keep in mind that as of right now the game is in its beta phase and it is of course very easy to mod it; therefore, you should all expect great modders to come up with decent cheating protection plugins for StarBound servers in the future.

No need for Anti-Cheat power, huh...? & I suppose this is because you're one of the Cheaters & wanna get to keep Cheating with total disregard for those hurt by your Actions...? :lod:

You seem to be misunderstanding something. As this is not an MMO, no one is forced to play in the same environment as any other person. The same reason why there are no main servers for people to connect to is the same reason why enforced anti-cheat measures are pointless.

You would be ignorant to say that there should be anti-cheat measures just because you don't like the idea of cheating. How someone else wants to play on their own server does NOT affect you.

That being said. If Terraria is any example, and it really is as this game can be modded by players, then you can full well expect there to be anti-cheat mods for you to take advantage of. In the case of Terraria the tshock mod gave server admins a lot of control needed to keep track of players and keep them from grieving or exploiting. But you will never see this kind of mod enforced by the developers because if someone wants to cheat on their own private worlds with their friends then why not let them?

"Trainers" are just memory editors. They edit the values of data in locally stored memory addresses. If player health is stored on the server side, changing the value locally will do nothing, except perhaps change the displayed health of a player. Once that player takes damage, the server will update accordingly.

You know Starbound is going to be DRM free later right? That means EXE monitoring and the like are a big no no.

I was curious earlier so I tested something out. Gave myself 50000000000000000 pixels with cheat engine. Yeah I hope that isn't a thing at release.
