    Hello fellow travelers!

I have spent my last three days playing Starbound pretty much constantly. I'd say 10 hours per day. (too much free time)
About fifteen minutes ago when I tried starting Starbound, it crashed, and when I finally got it open my character was gone, the character that I had spent the last 3 days just progressing and gathering stuff with!

It's not the end of the world, but I do feel pretty sad about it, concidering how much time I spent on it.

    Thankful for any answers!

    -Sam

UPDATE: I just created a new character, got into my broken ship and beamed down to the planet. It was the planet that I started on with my previous character, and everything that I had left on that planet was still there.

The game is still in Beta which means its subject to character wipes at almost any given time. Nothing we can really do besides not update the game or manually back up your character (which could cause issues :()

My character wasn't wiped, but it looks like you aren't the only one, no idea what's going on

was the game updated today though? This sounds like it may have been an error, not a forced wipe

Yeah, that's what I think. As a matter of fact, I forgot to mention that my whole computer crashed. Where can I see my saved characters? And how do I know if it's actually there?

Ah, a crash would explain it. Starbound is constantly saving data to your character, so if you shut down your computer without closing Starbound first the file will be corrupted.

The crash happened as I clicked my character. I clicked it, and then it started lagging. I had to manually turn off the computer.

    Yep, that'll definitely do it.

Man, that sucks. And there is no way to repair the file?

There should be files in the same directory with the .bak extension. Change that extension to the one of your current player file and delete the old one. As long as you didn't try to restart the game with that character 5+ times it should work.

Is there any way of knowing what character is what? I can see two different types.

    and

The first of the two only has 3 files; no backups, the second one has 3 backups of each different area. (player, ship and metadata.

Try the one with the backups first. ('cos you cant really do anything with the other)

@xxswatelitexx is much more knowledgable on this subject than I am so he might be able to help.

there are bak files for all 3 types of character files. A set for character, ship world, and metadata.

Don't know if there is a way to recover the character after that, as the way backups work I thought it would resort to using one if one failed to load first. Which could mean all for some reason ended up getting corrupt. I don't quite know exactly if that is the case; I have not messed with those files beyond looking at them in notepad++

As the other person mentions I think someone else might be able to flesh out more on this. I only know the basics of those files. I know more about the pak file than anything else, which is not important in this case...:(

Another update: I got my ship back, but with none of it's contents. I've got the level 3(4?) upgrade back, but all my chests and things are still gone.

Glad to see you got it fixed - Aye if there is no backup file you basically will have to reset it.
    You can use
    Code:
    /admin
    /help
to get your items back one at a time

First of all, where do I do that? And second, what file controls the content of the ship? Is it the shipe file aswell?[DOUBLEPOST=1423555362][/DOUBLEPOST]Oh, and sorry by the way! I had the link to this post copied, but forgot to paste it on your profile page!
