Character Traits

This would add traits to your character. When you create your character he will get 6 random traits, 3 good, 3 bad. If your character had the trait "nyctophobia" (fear of darkness) when your in a dimly lit place your character will become less reasonable, he would jerk in one direction and after awhile he would start seeing things like monsters. When you attack the monster it would disappear because it is only a figment of your imagination. If you have the cautious trait your character would start walking slowly near lava etc. If your character had the trait "angler" he would have a bonus in fishing.
Traits would also change your dialogue options with NPCs like if you had the "rude" trait your dialogue option might be to call the NPC a donkey butt. If you had the "persuasive" trait you could persuade guards to let you go into unauthorized areas. There would be a system that doesn't let you get traits that don't go together like "hydrophobic" and "angler"

Hope you like my idea :)

I think the bad traits far outweigh the good traits, so I would not like to see something like this added, as well as having to cheat the system by making the same character multiple times to get optimal traits, doesn't seem fun.

I would play with the traits I get and my ideas aren't perfect, give me suggestions and I can rebalance it :)
It isn't fun to reroll your character to get optimal trait, I don't know why somebody would do that if they are looking to play the game for fun :barefeet:

A major design decision was that players would not be screwed over later by choices they had no practical understanding of at character creation

In real life you could be screwed over because of your flaws too

Well, I like it. It seems more fun, but I could see some "losers" trying to make an optimal character .

Yeah, some people only play games to win, they don't even enjoy the game

I don't like having to make decisions that I am stuck with for the rest of the game before I even start playing. I don't even like having to choose a starter at the beginning of Pokemon because I can't catch the other ones later on. If I look at my character's trait and wonder "should I restart and try again?" and then go online to see just how good/bad my abilities are, then it's terrible game design. I felt this way about Rogue Legacy, since sometimes you get stuck with really shitty abilities like Vertigo and your time is better spent killing yourself as fast as possible to get a re-roll.

While you do get screwed over by things like this in real life, games are meant to be fun, not simulate reality.

But you don't choose your inherent flaws in real life.

The man with the speech impediment didn't choose it beacuse it would make him more athletic.
He didn't Choose it at all, and that's the point.

Yes, I'm agree, usualy in games you can chose traits yourself, good and bad(if you have good, you have bad, if you don't have any good traits, then you can avoid bad(or if you so hardcore, you can still select bad traits without any good ones)).
And traits mustn't block any game content at my opinion too.

That makes it funner though, your next character will be able to do different things and your characters will always be unique

You're characters are unique based on your choices, not what RNGesus gives you.

Realism is not a valid argument for a game mechanic.

I think you ought to leave that kind of thing to Rogue Legacy. It's not a bad mechanic, and I don't disagree that some people would enjoy it, but it's not what I want in Starbound. I want my character to be free to go anywhere and do anything, to explore. I don't want to always be frustrated that he can't swim, or is a jerk to NPCs, or even has some kind of ability that made the game 'easier' for me than for others. If I have an advantage, I want it to be because of my choices. If I have a disadvantage, same thing.

No. This is not the type of game for that. If you like this sort of system go play Rogue Legacy.

    Edit: Name drop ninja'd.

Maybe we've been focusing too much on the negative aspect.

What about tech items that could be equipped that had a similar pro/con system? Like a tech item that gives you a boost like night-vision when you are in the dark, but weakens or blinds you when you are in bright light. Maybe a vegetarian-friendly item that grants more benefit each time you eat vegetables, but makes you sick if you try eating meat. The cautious trait could be on a tech item that makes you move slower around spikes or lava, but that makes it hard to dodge enemy attacks if you are near other hazards, too.

In other words, the idea wasn't all bad and wasn't a waste of time.

Cool! The tech idea sounds much better!

  19. Sir Slush

    Sir Slush Subatomic Cosmonaut

Hmm. Better, but still not something I think should be in Starbound.
That basically replaces grinding to get a desirable character with grinding to get a desirable item, and virtually guarantees it will be ten or fifty times as difficult if the item was scarce in the first place.

Note that this was never a bad idea -- I mean, look how well it worked for Rogue Legacy! -- I just don't think it fits with Starbound's main focus, that's all.

I really don't want this be implemented in Starbound. I mean in Project Zomboid they did somewhat of the same idea you did but you were able to pick Negative Traits which gave you points depending how much it would of affected you. Then you were able to get good traits with the points you earned by the negative traits. Can't really explain this correctly.
