Closed Character Deleted on launch, old saved player folder doesn't help?

Hey there, I've been playing the nightlies and I know the updates can be hazardous, but since my saved player got wiped when I downloaded the latest update, I've tried replacing the player folder with some recent back-ups I had, and none have worked. The select player screen still has all blank new characters. Just wondering if I'm doing it wrong or if there's any way to get my old player back?

Old saves are incompatible with the Nightly builds. You'll also need to wipe your player and universe folders every so often (sometimes every day) as updates are made that affect these files.
