Character Class?

    Like most people (I'm assuming) I've been digging around for ANYTHING I can find related to Starbound - from confirmed features to mock-up screenshots to rumors and possibilities. But something I've come across and haven't seen really discussed anywhere is character 'class'. On the Starbound Wikipedia entry it states that characters class is determined by their armor, and I've read in many other places about the shield/white damage system, the tech, and about the various weapon types, some places suggesting that tank and support builds for a character in party situations are completely viable.

    Now of course not everyone is going to play multiplayer, but I'm working on the assumption here that many of you will - some even plan to be part of HUGE 'clans' or 'guilds', some of those even including RP! So my question is thus: What sort of character do you intend to build in Starbound? Do you favor a more direct, melee approach? Would you prefer making use of status effects like poisons and burns? Long range guns and other projectiles? Or will you be looking to fill a more supportive role, like helping keep your party alive or building structures for your party to hide behind for safety? Given the flexibility of the game there are TONS of possibilities. :)

    Me personally, I've always favored ranged attacks. I think I'd like to make a character that fires a bow or a bowgun perhaps, with a few supportive abilities on hand (depending on what the game will eventually have to offer in that regard).

    Oh, and I've read that switching out armor/tech sets on the fly while on a planet might not really be a thing in Starbound (from what I've read it was suggested that you would have to go back to your ship to do a lot of swapping out), so before everyone says "I'll just adjust to whatever the current situation is" might want to think twice about that :p Especially since (supposedly) you won't be able to teleport back to your ship if you're not on the surface of a planet.

    I could be wrong though. None of what I've said is meant to be "THIS IS HOW THE GAME IS", it's just what I've read.

    Since I'm going to be playing with a group, I hope to do whatever role will be help them. Whether that be a tanky melee guy or a strong DPS bowman or gunman or a supportive person with a vehicle. I like all of them, so I'll probably be a jack-of-all-trades kind of a guy.

    And I bet you someone is gonna reply that "there won't be any classes in this game why does this thread exist" since they didn't read the thread :p

    I'll probably mostly build but for combat situations I will probably most likely use a ranged sniper rifle or something. Though I'll probably do everything as I like all the classes.

    I'm using 'class' in the most abstract way here ^^; If we're talking the holy trinity of tank/dps/heals that's one thing, but Starbound isn't so clearly defined. That's why I was curious as to how people would build their character. :) Would they go for that traditional setup or something more versatile?

    I tend to play two archetypes: the mage and the warrior. So:

    Character 1: pure long-range damage dealer with area of effect capability. Think rocket launcher (preferably with rapid fire) as a main weapon of choice, not sniper rifle. But, of course, whatever will feel better. Still, basically an engine of ranged destruction, if he will be a glass cannon that's fine, but if will be possible to avoid without sacrificing much of the damage output — that's even better.

    Character 2: pure melee off-tank. I don't really like to be a main tank with shield and mitigation maxed, without any damage output. So, this one will probably be using either two-handed melee weapon or dual wielding option, depending on power of each weapon kind (I do not have an aesthetic preference here), with really heavy armor and really great damage mitigation, but not with sacrificing damage power.

    Other characters probably will be silly and/or experimental. Like pyromaniac Floran, who ironically loves fire. Or Glitch with the most ridiculous and unpopular weapon choice, he is severely glitched anyway. Or cowardly Avian armed with small and energy cheap gun, wearing heavy health armor with various mobility buffs — his damage will suck, but he is unkillable kiter with a large margin for errors.

    I also do like to mix stuff, so gunslinger Hylotl or samurai Novakid.

    But I am a hoarder, so all my characters eventually will be equipped with everything that exists in the universe.

    I'll have to see what's available first. I'm probably going to go for a ranged playstyle, and maybe some sort of support (if available).

    your class is how you build your char
    there will be a load of different builds
    yet most will focus around a basic idea(melee, ranged, support, dps, tank, etc)
    and then you build your class your way

    I really feel like the only class will be what you chose to make your self over time I doubt when you start out the game sias choose you class I guess it's more of a play style and equipment thing. Then again I could be wrong because I have yet to play the game.

    it would be cool if each races armour type and set made a new way to play each basic class type
    like in heavy floran armour you could tank but It would focus on regen then on defence well something like the human would focus on defence
    adding a bit of variety to the builds

    I'm more of a melee sort of player so my main weapons would be swords and what not however I would probably have at lest one ranged weapon handy cause it's always nice to have one if the need for one pops up

    Edit: although seeing as how there will be mechs I have a feeling I will spend a vast amount of time being a mech pilot I really hope there will be a melee based mech lol

    I'm planning to be a Hylotl Beast Tamer. If such feats are effective enough for combat, I will stay with that setup until the end of time, taming various forms of fauna and utilizing them like a sort of Minion Class or Summoner, if you will. I will have a flying, ranged type creature; a large, tank type creature; and an agile, high-damage-output creature, probably one that could swim for a good all-purpose team of monsters for all terrain types. Whilst my pets fought, I would use a sword or a spear to combat any that get through my beasts.

    A guardian. Tank character. Attacking creatures with spear and shield, with the backup of a pistol. Just in case.
    And if I can't use spears with shields then... Axes/swords.

    I will be playing single player as a gun slinging DPS and my primary in multiplayer will most likely be a support type, I have my fingers crossed that in the enormous number of items in the game they incorporate some support type healing gear but if not just general support :)
