Changes to moons potentially game-breaking?

But if people don't do it who will we feel morally superior to?!

Assuming there is another planet in that system the player can travel to. In the worst case this isn't the case and what then?

I could argue against that dumbing down could be hurtful in some aspects. Take Skyrim for example, compared to the other Elder Scrolls games, it has lots of things that are more streamlined, and condensed into things that make the game generally easier, yet feel weird when you compare them with the rest of the games in the series. That being said, since Starbound is the first in the starbound series (assuming that they even ever make a sequel to it) can you really say 'dumbing down' is being done on the game without it being compared to other games that aren't it?

By the laws of astronomy, a moon always orbits a planet.

I think he meant it as "Every moon has a planet" rather than "Every planet has a moon".

By the laws of astonomy, but not by the laws of Starbound :p

false. I just encountered a thread where this EXACT scenario happened to someone.

Well no, a sane person wouldn't say that, but the people you're arguing with are grognards who can't enjoy anything unless it's a frustrating, tedious pile of crap.

You'd have better luck arguing with a wall.

There are problems and then there are stupid problems. If you go somewhere unprepared the game isn't to blame for not holding your hand all the way through. It should be common sense to always have enough fuel to get back to where you came from.

    Just to make it clear:
Yes, I am totally ok with the player being punished for going unprepared, but no, I am not ok with the player being forced to start completely over, just because it "was his fault". As punishing as an open-ended game can be, there ALWAYS has to be an opportunity to get out of the situation. If perma-death is part of the game, then I am also ok with the player losing his character, since he was being informed in advance that the game has perma-death. But the way Starbound currently is, perma-death isn't a part of the game, so I am not ok with it existing, doesn't matter if you die or if your are forced to start all over again. In this case just saying "Well, it's the players fault" isn't a design choice, it is just lazy game design, even if the player lacks any kind of common sense.

  11. This totally happened to me. Got the game yesterday. Played ALL DAY. Got tons of awesome stuff on the first planet. Got enough fuel to travel. Stopped playing. Upgraded. Booted up the game and traveled to a moon with all my fuel, ASSUMING it's hard to get stranded stranded. Like there would always be a way to make and get somewhere else. I freeze to death and suffocate within 30 seconds of beaming down.

Googled the problem and ended up here.

I'm okay with starting over. Small bummer. But space is space. And nothing can live in space.

I think its planned at some point to enhance info in the starmap. Maybe just write something like "No Oxygen" in red next to the other stuff. If people still go there and are stuck then, it is entirely their fault.
Common sense states, a moon doesnt have a breathable atmosphere, however, currently every other planet, asteroid fields aside, has the same, breathable atmosphere, so i guess it might be easy to make the mistake (though highly unlikely, unless you really only collect fuel for 1 jump, and have no spare wood to convert or whatsoever.

(Edit: whoa, that last sentence. well, im tired..)

Isn't this why we have wikis so we don't have to learn things the hardway? In the old days the only way to know ANYTHING about a game was either the game told you or a buddy told you. The game doesn't always "tell you" in a friendly way. This is the simple fact of life game or not. But LO AND BEHOLD we have the internet and in this day and age 99.9% of people when playing a new game will have the wiki open in the background looking stuff up as they go preventing many issues like this. If you find something that isn't documented and you dont add it to said wiki then your more at fault then anyone for not helping. If it is something that you would of had to know about to even look up in the first place then you didn't have the forethought to do proper research. For example with the moon... At some point i would hope you looked up basic descriptions of all the diffrent biome types at whitch point it should be noted on the moon you need breathing gear.

If you are a person that doesn't use wikis then you accept the fact you are going into the game blind. You know theres going to be things that you don't know and things that could kill you. You have no body to blame but your self. It is impossible to tell a play 100% of everything about a game they play. Thus far it is kind of a sheer drop cause there arn't many planetary differences but once they become common place it should click EXTREMELY fast for anyone with a bit of reasoning to put two and two together and make the educated guess that planets may be based on real physics in a RPG-Sandbox.

Many of my friends don't read patch notes they leave that up to me. I host all the servers i am in charge of research and all that non-sense and i totally forgot to warn them about the moon problem. But when they noticed some planets had low gravity they went STRAIGHT to the idea that other such features may of been added and went to ask me. In normal cases people would go to a wiki or you know... EXPERIMENT.

All said in done learning sucks. If you want to help people not die go add information to the wiki thats clearly linked on the launcher.

  14. Not sure if it's been mentioned but the answer to this would be setting your home planet before you'd go, and if you made a mistake and have no fuel you can tele back to your home planet at no cost.

Don't have a home planet, then you'd be SOL.

No, I'm thinking that the OP wants a game where absolutely everything has an "undo" option, even after the multitude of resources that are already made available to him so he'll know exactly what to expect before he even clicks the "play" button. Kinda' like how somebody orders coffee from McDonald's and then sues the company after finding out the hard way that the coffee was hot because of their own ignorance. Personally, I think lines have to be drawn somewhere 'cause if we keep dumbing things down for the dumb, then it's like I said earlier...Pong with a ball that doesn't move diagonally.

Not gonna lie, I like the new airless moons. The first time I saw a moon biome planet I raised an eyebrow and beamed down. Walked around a bit... and immediately thought: "How the hell am I not suffocating?" I was worried they were going to stay like that.

Doesn't make any difference. This is one of those cases that being in Beta is a reasonable excuse how this works. They are implementing a planned feature, but right now it isn't supported by other mechanics. That doesn't mean it was purposely built to be game breaking, it works and contributes positively to the game.

If you read patch notes, you would realize that soon they will be adding planet descriptions in order to tell players certain information, such as this.

Cant they just have it so your spawn planet is your original home planet. Then you'd just be able to tele back and get some fuel.
