Let's say you had a house full of family members stay with you for a month. You love them all but couldn't wait to get a way from them by the time they left. Sick to death of the sight of them, you are. Bitching and wining about every little thing, they were. Can't even bare to drop them a line over the next month, so sick of them you are.
Definitely not dead. They simply took a break for the holiday, and are continuing to work on the game. They are working as hard as they can. No need to worry, it's only been a couple weeks. When it's months from now and we haven't heard anything, then you can worry.
I'm amused this has been a frequent accusation/concern/whatever since way back in the alpha. With over a million copies sold I would be astounded if they poofed. Both because they know their game is awesome and because it means there's the potential to make a shit ton more money over the life of the game. So if it ain't the joy of programming and seeing the game grow it's the money. Either way they've got reason to keep at it.
It's worth noting that their daily updates were slowing their progress down and they knew it, they may have abandoned the daily blog update so they could have more things to present when they do post something. Also since this may be the last wipe they may have massive plans to make sure they get everything character related in before hand. They want this to be the last wipe. Have faith in the developers, they haven't let us down yet.
Yeah, of course they've not gone and are (probably) still working on the next update. Just a bit strange that we haven't heard from them (on the forums) for so long. Nothing to worry about I'm sure. Regardless of how busy they are, though, it just takes a second to pop into the forums and drop a note. Part of keeping the fan base happy so they don't revolt (hints of that are going on already)
I too am curious as to when the next update will be. I don't care about wipes, indeed I welcome the coming "Final Wipe" when they get their new update system in place which will get rid of the need for wipes for future updates. Of course we all need to understand the devs have families and have had to deal with the Holidays just like the rest of us have. The devs have surely been on a well deserved break just as many of the rest of us have. That being said, I'd really like for the devs to drop a line or something though and let us know what's up. I haven't even played with this latest update that added skyrails and such and now that the Holidays are over and I have time to play I feel like there's not much point knowing that the next patch and final wipe should be close. Any kind of dev response on what's coming up would be much appreciated by the community I'm sure.
The two latest responses I found on Reddit. Omni posted that they're having troubles with memory leaks, and that he's not sure on a date yet. http://www.reddit.com/r/starbound/comments/1usf8e/final_wipe_eta/ Bartwe had posted about 4 days ago (I think, reddit's time estimate is weird) that he thought at least a week, maybe two. http://www.reddit.com/r/starbound/comments/1ug5uh/my_hylotl_has_recently_become_depressed_and_has/ Omni's post is more recent than Bartwe's, so my take is that the memory leak issue is taking longer than hoped, making Bartwe's estimate out of date.
I'm very glad they are nailing down the leak issue early on, I used to play minecraft with lots of mods until a graphics driver update, I can no longer play minecraft because the leaking memory piles up until my computer does a critical stop (blue screen). I DO NOT want that with starbound, I will gladly wait for it to be resolved, even if it takes a whole month! Game stability is paramount above update frequency.
Leaving the game in a virtually content-less state for a month is just as bad as leaving it with the memory leak in my opinion. It'll just choke out people in a different fashion, having them lose hope that the game will be updated at all rather than having frustrated players quit because of how unstable things are.
Were this a fully released game and not a testing phase to make sure everything works I would agree. However I prefer it when the content that is released has had enough time put into it to not be a half-assed, glitchy and unstable pile of crap. For those that leave because it's not coming along as fast as they feel entitled to it moving there will more then likely be an equal or greater amount willing to sit through it for however long it takes them to completely ensure that the game doesn't kill computers. Looking over the development and the content that will eventually be added before automaton (intros, individual stories, mechs, hoverikes, NPC AI, Ship upgrades, sellback, etc) I'm impressed that they've managed to release and stabilize what they have since the beta release. Just give it time.
yeah... :C I hope soon there will be like a huge update and surprise us.... but I don't think so, I think they are taking a starbound brake or something ? or they just got attacked by space pirates from the kosmos sesctor C-6 :alien: that makes the most sence
If you went back as few as 4 posts, you would see that there is a definitive answer, posted on reddit by omni. It would help if you read at least part of the current page of a thread before posting.
I agree on giving the poor DEVELOPERS a break. They've been working on this game for how long? A year? Two years? A month or two would be a nice time for them to rest their burning fingers and strained minds in my opinion (coding and junk is NOT easy). Besides, you could always play some other game to occupy your time and just check back every now and then. For me, I tend to play Terraria as a sort of teaser and tribute to Starbound as it is being built. Terraria has gotten some good updates the past few months or so, and has easily kept me occupied.
i have been following Starbound for two years now, eating up every detail about it and have already gotten thirteen hours on the game and cannot wait to play more of it, but i'm been on vacation for the past couple of weeks you guys are amazing devs. with the frequent updates, you deserve the success you have been getting good luck.
No more ship wipes? "To clarify, the next update will make characters backwards compatible, meaning no more character wipes. Including ships." https://twitter.com/Tiyuri
