Challenge Rooms Not Fun

    I feel challenge rooms are too hard to be enjoyable. I've attempted 12 challenge rooms (portals) and died within seconds each time.

    I've played many games where you die over and over and they are fun when you learn something each time and get better. The nature of challenge rooms doesn't support this. You get one shot through, you die, lose 30% pixels and it's gone. Where's the fun?

    Please consider some of the following:

    Make challenge rooms not as challenging so that people can more easily win.
    Make challenge rooms not disappear after you die in them.
    Make challenge rooms not cost you pixels upon death.

    It's the combination of these factors that makes me not even want to attempt them.

    I know people are going to say that I'm just not good at them and that's true. I just feel that you shouldn't have to be an expert to have fun.

    I strongly disagree. They are in my humble opinion allredy easy (without tech), and they are called challenge rooms and are supposed to be a challenge.

    However i'm not against giving people a second chance in challenge rooms, perhaps dying in a challenge room should lock the door but you can unlock it again with a offering (some materials normal on that world perhaps?).

    Either way, challenge room is in no way necessary for progression so i would be deeply disepointed if they end up nerfing them to bits the way they did with the erchius horror.

    Great point. If they are fun for others at this level of difficulty, definitely keep it. It would just be nice if others who cannot overcome the difficulty could enjoy the content also.

    I like them. The 1 with the fire and the floors that disappear Kill me every time. I am not good at platforming so its challenging for me.

    That one did kill me too. Assuming we're talking about the same one. I should have cheesed it with my grappling hook. :p

    One thing that makes them a little easier is having someone go with you (multiplayer = overpowered). You can teleport directly to players who are in your party, so death is just a loss of pixels.

    I actually really enjoy challenge rooms. If you get the right techs, they become really easy too.

    Hmmm, I also enjoy them. I'm not a great platform-hopper, but I take my time and have been lucky so far. One idea I had as i read this that might help the OP, is to make it so that if you die in the challenge room, you can chose to respawn at the beginning of the challenge, with pixel loss (30% as per normal), or you can chose to respawn outside the room with no more chances, but no pixel loss? Something like that might make it a little less frustrating?

    I'm fine with them as they are, and I think they did a great job on them. Most of this game is pretty easy, so it is kinda nice to have something that gets the adrenaline going. Could be worse though... permadeath? that take some serious guts.

    I play nightly so challenge rooms are still there. I am not good at platform-jumping. I finally, finally made it through one. I was so happy. Looked in the chest hoping for an upgrade module or decent weapon. I got a perfectly generic item and 3 bandages. I think I'll avoid them from now on.

    Awww bummer. I've gotten some pretty cool rewards so far: a nice axe, some modules and ores, etc. Totally worth doing, imho.

    I mean. I felt they were way, waaay too easy. I haven't been killed by one yet. I just wish the rewards were better. Nothing of use so far for me.

    Honestly it could do with a difficulty increase.

    The Perfectly Generic Items in the nightly build are actually an incomplete change - they're in the middle of reworking all of the melee weapons, so an old melee weapon was spawned in the chest and it got replaced due to the actual parts not existing.

    I understand that completely, I have 241 hours in nightly alone. My point was, that non platform people, like myself, have a real hard time with the challenge rooms and they need to put in something great. Something that makes it worthwhile to do them. I don't know if stable has good stuff, can't play yet as my characters are all race mods. I would make a new one if I could skip the stupid tutorial and just get to fixing my ship. (don't want to admin).

    I am also content with the Challenge Rooms.

    They are called "Challenge Rooms" and thus should challenge you somehow. I agree with what other threads have said - not all challenges should be about timing and platform jumping, but maybe in time there will be a bit of variety.

    I win some. I lose some.

    The biggest complaint I have and see mirrored occasionally is that the rewards for completion can be completely lackluster.
    Module and Tech upgrades are so common in Pleased Giraffe that getting something like this out of a Challenge Room is disappointing.
    The weapons typically (not always) are worse than ones I'm already using.

    Anyway, because of the nature and design of Challenge Rooms, I'm hoping they somehow tie into the Ark.
    Maybe they will eventually provide us with keys or lore that lead us to understanding the nature of the universe.
    Right now they just mostly give me junk I don't need.

    Tier 5+ armour, and a shitload of Medipacks, and a decent melee weapon (For the enemies in some of them) and you'll be fine.

    I did some of these today, and they were a lot of fun. If you are playing on normal difficulty, it does makes sense to carry a crate or put your affairs in order on the ship before going into one of these, much like going to a boss fight( @Zardo: take advantage of storage in normal difficulty. :) there also plenty of planets and caves with sweet sweet ore )This makes me wonder about dashing by accident, but these puzzles are fair in what they expect the person to do.

    As far as prizes, i think id be cool with either its own regional rewards and/or an increased chance of the rarer loot catagories , like vanity gear.)

    2-1 on them!

    agreed that challenge rooms or dungeons are a nice add-ins to Starbound. make it more that interesting.. i just have a burning questions for you guys.. can you disarm traps in that room? or when you only compete the room.. can you loot the stuff like traps and etcs to be used for base defence building?

    I didn't think challenge rooms were that hard at all. o.o I've done 3 in the time I've gotten to play and I was able to go through every one with little trouble.

    Then again I've played platforms my whole life and compared to heatman's stage in Megaman 2 this is a much more pleasant challenge.

    From what I can tell, the doors disappear when you leave, regardless of if you've completed the challenge or not (I wouldn't really know since I did all the challenges in the doors I've found). I wish they'd only disappear after you leave through the finish door. If the challenges are going to get more complicated I'd be happy if I could leave until I figured it out without worry of losing it.

    I think challenge rooms could be a little harder... on lower tiers they feels just right, but on higher ones (grapple hook ftw) they are just to easy.

    My suggestion would be, that CF could make a set of Challenges for each tier or each second. Maybe with nerf for Tier 1-Planet Challenge Rooms. I cant understand why some people have problems with them but okay, it would be a compromise.
