Hm, I suppose that would probably be better. They already have chickens, so why not cows? The procedural generated mobs don't need to drop meat-- they are alien life forms that could be toxic or who knows what. Better to eat something that is clearly edible, like a space cow. That, or if they really want to keep it similar to the way it is, they could have it so <25% of the random mobs can drop meat. By requiring a bow, it will probably just tempt me to use bows all the time instead of having to switch weapons. We'll see.

Good idea, but need to remember that players can starve on any planet, so should presumably find a source of food on every planet (except perhaps planets specifically designed without food as an extra challenge).

This just means more variety is needed for random monster gen. Some of the generated monsters should be "game-y", others not. Should be pretty simple to adjust the spawn ratio to balance it just right.

Entirely possible. I replied earlier why I still think this can be a problem.

Also, this might just be due to the small size of the planets in the stream I saw, but...

It really seemed like the dungeons were tiny. Like extremely tiny. I remember this:

    apexdungeon.png

This is the biggest dungeon I've actually seen, and it is still very small in my opinion.

Unless this Apex dungeon has a great deal of horizontal size that is off-screen...

    1. We should wait and see how water is going to work in more situations. I will say that part of the fun/challenge in terraria was trying not to drown while mining. Its definitely something I'd likecto see in this game.

    2. I originally liked the bow for hunting idea but then thought about the specifics of how it would work. I like many of the proposed ideas and I don't think that just because in real life we could hunt with anything means it should be in the game. I mean we cant fly around in spaceships but that's what the game is all about. Reality is never an arguement for or against game mechanics. That being said the bow situation can go a few different ways although I don't think any will work out.

So I had a bunch of different scenarios thought out but came to the conclusion that hunger in general will end up being a problem only for low level characters anyway. Once you hit a certain point, regardless of whatever mechanic you choose for food, it will become easy to obtain it. The only real wa to kind of keep the hunger thing relevant is to limit the mobs that dropbthe food as someone had mentioned. Thatv way even tho you can killb whatever as a high level character you'd still have to find those mobs first.

It was the back wall they mined only I think. It drained out which makes sense logically. I think someone said something about it not draining out if you mine the back wall once you get a certain distance underground. So... it is more of a feature and less of a bug. Think of it like you are on the side of a mountain at top level and as you go deeper down there isn't space behind the wall.

Anyhoo, if you watch other videos you can see that once they get very deep sometimes the background is a solid surface and not an empty background/sky.

If you mine the background then its going to drain the water, its a thing , the foreground blocks should not do that.

Ok, about that Fireball image... That looks like a mage fired that off. Is that the player character or an NPC? If there was magic in Starbound, I'd be ecstatic.

    Edit: nevermind.

I suppose in combatant to Terraria's dungeon, they make up for it with having a universe filled with various dungeons. Quantity over quality?
But no it doesn't seem too terrible big- Interesting rooms, but quickly run through.

Gawd, I hope not. I can understand these tiny things on low level planets, but... :lod:
It would still be nice if there were larger, deeper dungeons on higher level worlds.

If nothing else, I hope modding can sort this out. Like making our own large dungeons.

Well certainly the dungeons should be harder/bigger on harder planets. I would hate for the only thing to change about them is the mob difficulty inside of them.
We won't be seein' any dem zelda masterpieces, but they should be pretty deep and interesting.

I'm not worried about the dungeon generation. From what we've seen they already have a good foundation; they can only get better from here. I also don't think that the dungeons will be the only places to explore so I'm not too worried. Random caves should also be spawning with their own loot and monsters no? I was thinking that this game would have the spelunking like Terraria and then have the added bonus of dungeons as well.

I don't think SB will have the spelunking level of Terraria, nor does it it need do, at least not for release.

Terraria is single-planet. All adventuring you do is on that planet, and most of the content is underground. Starbound is multi-planet, so they can spread content across planets (as they do with biomes, tiers, occupying races etc.) which is per-planet.

Of course there will be some spelunking, but it doesn't have to be as extensive. I imagine it would be more tactical, such as a few small dungeons/facilities, some ore unique to the planet, etc. - and then move on. Few planets would take more than a few hours to explore, because there are dozens of planet types, each of them unique in their own way. If you had to spend 40 hours digging up one planet, you'd never get around to exploring other ones.

Post-release epic dungeon content? Sure. It'll make more sense on Tier X when you already explored most planet types and are looking for extra challenge. But for beta/release it's a better bet to have more inter-planet diversity than deeper planets.

We need to stop thinking of SB as "Terraria+". Both have their focus points and tradeoffs, and just because Terraria does something, doesn't mean SB should do it all and then some. A game that tries to be good at everything ends up being good at nothing.

Are dungeons not the same as the caves? They are both created by scripts so they have certain qualities. If there won't be caves then all they have to do it change part of the program that creates dungeons to make them contain more rooms. In either case I wouldn't be worried about the size of dungeons as we have seen because it's not difficult to change the size.

As far as only spending a few hours on a planet I'm not sure that should be the goal. If you have a "homeworld" you want it to have a little substance. There's no real incentive to build things on a planet if they are only worthy of a few hours of exploration. You may very well be right about the direction the game is taking but I think each planet should have a little substance. I don't think quantity is better than quality here. While Terraria had only one planet the only difference here is that you change planets through a different function. In Terraria all you had to do was generate another world. It had different attributes and you could pick the size. In Starbound you have to travel to new planets with a ship which is analogous to creating another planet. The biggest difference would be that not every world would have every biome and resources. But I don't see why the depth of each planet would need to suffer because it is limited in resources or biomes. If a planet is smaller then it will have less to do. But if it's larger then it should take significantly longer to explore completely.
