I'm actually concerned that other races' buildings, such as Glitch castles, are so luxurious, you'd have no motivation to build anything yourself, and would just take over their buildings instead. I hope the game will have some mechanics to make it not impossible but very difficult (e.g. high level guards, curses, or other challenges).

    Secret underground Apex facility!

    Observations:
    • For some reason only animals killed with a bow (but not, say, a sword) drop meat. I don't know why, and this seems kind of an artificial restriction.
    • Found bug/glitch where mining a single block in a pond starts draining all the water "into nowhere", it just disappears without going anywhere else.
    • Teleporting on a planet sometimes places you inside the earth, and you need to dig yourself out with the pickaxe.
    • FPS severely dropped during some fights. I guess there is still some optimization to be done.

  2. Wow it looks like the one stream I missed was the one that was full of win. Doesn't it always work that way :lolwut:

Thanks for sharing, these pics are awesome!

I was like "OMG Leth played Gorilla as a kid! I thought I was the only one!" :saywhat:

The pond thing isn't a glitch. When you remove some of the background wall, like he did, the water drains back there. I'm sure if he'd picked a higher background block, it'd only drain to that level, rather than one close to the ground, which would drain all of the water.

FPS drop is likely a streaming issue and the fighting has presumably the most code active at once, the most particles on screen at once, and this guy admitted his laptop isn't the best.

As for the bow, I have no idea why they limited it, but they already said that's a bit up in the air for now.

My point was that the entirety of the pond (like 200 blocks worth or more) disappeared because of just one mined block at the bottom of the pond, even though no path was created for all of the water to flow out. The water level should have just dropped by 1 block height, not all of the pond.

I think the deal with the bow is to make it slightly more challenging to obtain food, as just slaying everything with a rifle would yield too much meat and then you'd never go hungry. Also, it wouldn't really make sense to nerf how much hunger most food restores because like, apart from the Floran, who the hell eats 20 steaks before filling up?

All of these pictures look so pretty... except the Glitch house. That's kind of obnoxious with the big 'GLITCH' written inside of it.

    Its over. :(

Also, did you read the new weekly update by Molly? The bow dropping meat was mentioned. Also, the back wall water thing is intended, but I agree it's stupid.

I know the bow dropping meat was mentioned. It still doesn't make sense and feels like an artifical balance mechanic. Of course this is just my opinion.

The back wall water this is also bad because it completely removes the challenge that water is supposed to give you when mining. You can just mine a tile and have it all disappear. And then we have the devs introduce annoying artificial restrictions on speedmining (e.g. pickaxe durability), all while removing much more natural and logical obstacles to speedmining, like ponds of water in your way. This doesn't make sense.

Yeah, they need to change the water draining, maybe make it above a certain height limit the water will drain? And also, if the mechanic works underground as well, you could remove all the water on a planet really easily and have no more water :(

Edit: Oceans and seas would be useless. D:

Edit2: The spider flying off a vertical wall could be another observation.

Terraria had a simple solution - below a certain level, background walls are unmineable. This actually makes total sense - above ground, you can think of a background wall a single block, but below ground, the "background" actually means the miles and miles of earth around the hole you dug. It makes no sense for you to be able to mine away all that background earth below ground.

This solution would also allow you to drain water via backwall removal above-surface, which works fine in your house, etc. But not in dungeons where you shouldn't have that level of control.

I also don't like the bow/meat mechanic. I think it is fine for tier 1, but later on I would like to see a sort of "hunting" mod that can be found on any weapon, or have hunting weapons of every major type (melee/ranged, 1 handed/2 handed, etc) so that there are more options. I like the idea of forcing players to trade power in exchange for meat (let's not have stacks of 999 alien meat plz) so that they will switch to a meat gathering weapon instead of their normal weapons, but I don't like the idea of bows exclusively holding that position. After all, people do use hunting rifles for... well, hunting.

For water, I think it is nice that it is easier to remove liquids than in Terraria (it could get really awful trying to get rid of it sometimes, and it was so easy to duplicate), but they should have a few restrictions. Maybe the liquids won't flow out through the background if you are below a certain depth. Obviously they will have some way to make this work, since there are ocean worlds. Also, if you could fill up tanks of liquids using a mid-high tier tool and carry up to 999 blocks of water per inventory slot, for example, then they wouldn't need to make it so easy to remove the liquids. There are a lot of ways to handle it, and I'm sure they'll look into it more as the beta unfolds and they get more and more feedback on the difficulty. You may recall that once upon a time in Terraria, you could drop sand into lava, then mine the blocks away and they would be empty-- then the patch came.

I think the simplest and most natural solution is to just limit the types of mobs that drop meat. Only have game or game-like animals drop them, and they should be just common enough to find without starving, but not common enough to spam you with meat.

As for weapons - every "normal" weapon (e.g. sword, bow, or bullet-firing gun) should preserve the meat. Weapons like explosives, flamethrowers, poison weapons, laser weapons, magic weapons, etc. wouldn't drop meat, and this would give you a natural tradeoff choice between powerful weapons and usually-weaker weapons which don't damage the corpse.

I'm sorry if putting it in a [ spoiler ] tag, and then putting the words (SPOILER) (SPOILER) inside the name of the spoiler tag, was still insufficient for you. I guess next time I'll have to make it a jigsaw puzzle or something. ;)
