Carrots Make Florans Uncomfortable

Actually, just now I checked out an orange potted plant and my Floran said it was pretty, cause it looked like fire.

I think they'll just take any excuse to hunt and stab something. Or maybe they're referencing that the monster was a herbivore and thereby thought it would be easy meat.

Edit: Although, in Greenfinger's Notes: Receiving Guests, it does say Florans are offended when you damage the plantlife around them.

Which still doesn't explain their sense of unease towards non-sentient plant produce.

Or rather, specifically carrots and being indifferent towards any other produce, meat or vegetarian.

That really wasn't meant to explain it. The most likely reasoning for a dislike of carrots that I can think of is simply that many people after eating carrots raw experience discomfort or pain.

Wut? Seriously I eat carrots raw all the time, it's my preferred method. I've never heard of this.

Probably not applicable to plant people who judging by lore are capable of eating pretty much anything.

It's simple really - It's much more funny to imagine the reason for their discomfort being Freudian in nature.

They're plant people and a carrot is a vegetable that looks somewhat phallic. I don't really see the need for any other explanation when this theory much funnier than any of those reasons could ever be.

Apparently it's a thing. Specifically, this one:

They also seem to have a negative reaction to bananas. Or atleast banana posters in Apex buildings. "Sssuch horrible food"

Well, unlike carrots, bananas are supposedly poisonous to anyone who isn't an Apex.

    I think....

I imagine its because they're vaguely shaped like penises.

Interesting read about the OAS. However about your theory, honestly I don't see how the shape would matter to an asexual plant which only outwardly displays sexual characteristics, but reproduces on it's own without a partner. To such a being a phallus would mean nothing.

Seriously read the lore. There are no male or female Florids. Any resemblance is superficial in nature.

I don't see how the potential humor of the theory has anything to do with how correct it may or may not be.

i am almost sure they are talking about the poster itself, not the bananas, like... they tried to eat... the poster... yea...

So you're just ignoring the whole "plant people" and "phallic looking" things then?

I have yet to see another theory that is as convincing as this. The humour is not the foundation of the theory, it just enforces my personal bias in favor of it.

Good point. But my assumption is that they still need a compatible partner (For genetic reasons) to reproduce and that the unisex part (Which doesn't mean asexual) refers to an ability to grow whichever parts are needed to be compatible with their partner. The exact mechanics of their reproduction is as of yet undisclosed, so this is just a hypothesis.

The fact that they have so little experience with phallic sexual organs could explain their discomfort around them.
They may not have those organs in their own race but they may know about how other races, humans, apex, ect. have them, and the connection between the phallic shape of the carrot and the shapes of the foreign races' sexual organs could be what's disturbing them. Imagine if we met a bunch of alien races that did the nasty with "penises" shaped like hamburgers, where the "buns" would split apart and the "patty" would deposit the genetic goo. Would you ever look at a hamburger the same way again?

    Thanks for giving me nightmares.

I want to add though that most plants do need a partner. This is chosen at random though by the various bugs that move pollen (I think its pollen).

People eat non-human genetalia all the time. Many cultures actually consider it a delicacy. Some people also have no taboos about eating things that resemble our own genetalia. Look at Penny Arcade and their "dickerdoodles." It all depends on the culture that they come from.

Florids are a more primitive species, who do not at a whole yet understand that they aren't the only intelligent race, or intelligent race that matters, depending on the case. They come from a society far removed from anything you could imagine. In fact it's so far removed from anything the other races could imagine, few florids have even experienced life lived along side another race. How would you expect them to know how another race reproduces?

Even 1500 years ago, our own race still believed in autogenesis for things not covered under animal husbandry. Autogenesis being that it spontaneously comes into being. Even with animal husbandry and experiencing intercourse themselves they still didn't understand the proper roles the man and woman played in all of that. Look at Henry VIII who divorced his wives with a guillotine for not producing him boys. To him it was a matter of "I'll fool around with my new wife a bit, and eventually if she does her part right she'll bear me a son."

Florids neither raise other races via xeno-animal husbandry, nor do they often live close enough among them to witness how the other races reproduce full term. Remember it takes 9 months. At most I'd give them some sort of myth about how a male and female share quarters long enough, then a woman incubates and produces a newborn. Probably with some of their own experiences in reproduction tied in to fill in the gaps. After all, humans don't usually flaunt their sexuality in front of everyone do they? A Florid simple shouldn't know the details.
